INTERNAL DISPLACEMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE
From 27 to 29 July NRC/IDMC will take part in a technical meeting on migration, displacement and human mobility in Casablanca, Morocco. The event, organized by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), will bring together members of the Executive Committee (ExCom) of the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), national and regional experts, representatives from international and United Nations organizations as well as the academic community to "Enhance the understanding of and expertise on how the impacts of climate change are affecting patterns of migration, displacement and human mobility; and the application of such understanding and expertise".
The meeting came out of discussions at the second meeting of the ExCom that took place in Bonn in May 2016, where the work on establishing a Task Force on Displacement was initiated. IDMC submitted this joint submission with partner members of the Advisory Group on Human Mobility and Climate Change ahead of those meetings, and delivered this statement on behalf of the Advisory Group at an ExCom side event on the topic of non-economic losses.
On 18 May, IDMC’s latest research and evidence was presented to over 55 delegates to the Bonn conference by our Senior Strategic Advisor, Michelle Yonetani at a side event, alongside other members of the Advisory Group. The event was reported on by the UNFCCC newsroom: “New Data Brings New Answers on Climate Migration, Experts Set Out Latest Advances in Bonn”.
