Ryan Reynolds & Jake Gyllenhaal Are Not Alone In New Trailer & Super Bowl Spot For ‘Life’
5 hours ago
2017 is the year we’re going to be freaked out in space at the multiplex. Ridley Scott‘s “Alien: Covenant” will once again bring galactic terror to the big screen, but coming first is the simply titled “Life,” where a bunch of astronauts face something definitely not human.
Starring Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson, from pens of “Deadpool” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and directed by Daniel Espinosa (“Safe House,” “Easy Money“) the action takes on board an international space station where things start going very, very wrong.

‘The Lego Batman Movie’ Feels Like Kind Of A Letdown [Review]
From a distance, “The Lego Movie” looked like it could be the worst kind of modern studio filmmaking: literally an adaptation of Danish plastic bricks, sold on name recognition and not much else, and packed with corporate synergy for other Warner Bros properties. But in the hands of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, it became a surprise joy: a playful, inventive, often hilarious, frequently surprising film that’s as good as any studio animated effort in recent years.

IMDb Shutting Down Its Message Boards
3 February 2017 2:26 PM, PST
In the year 2017, who on Earth still uses message boards? Okay, there are still plenty of corners in the internet where groups dedicated to various interests still use the outdated communication platform, but in an era with Slack, Facebook Groups, and no shortage of other ways to share feedback, commentary and media with 20 or 200 people, a message board seems a bit old school. And that’s just one of the reasons why IMDb is doing away with them.

‘War On Everyone’ Starring Alexander Skarsgård & Michael Pena Is A Comedy With A Target That’s Too Broad [Review]
3 February 2017 1:49 PM, PST
Lesbians. The Burmese. Maybe farmers. With all the minorities, interest groups, nationalities sexualities, and ethnicities that John Michael McDonagh finds time to craft a specially designed slur for, or chuck a throwaway insult at, in his shambolic, shaggy, occasionally very funny “War on Everyone,” it becomes a fun game to work out if there’s anyone who definitely will not be offended. I don’t think Tibetans get a mention, and I’m pretty sure meteorologists and albinos emerge unscathed.

Oscar Nominated Composer Mica Levi Breaks Down The Score For ‘Jackie’ In New Podcast Talk
3 February 2017 1:23 PM, PST
It isn’t always easy for newcomers to break into the Oscar field, which made Mica Levi‘s nomination for Best Score for “Jackie” all the more remarkable. The composer’s work on Pablo Larrain‘s film is arguably as vital to its dramatic impact as Natalie Portman‘s Oscar nominated performance. And in a new talk with The Frame, Levi shares some insights into her work on the movie.

‘Super Dark Times’ Is A Promising Debut Drama Marred By A Splashy Finale [Rotterdam Review]
3 February 2017 1:03 PM, PST
At first it feels like a relief that the ironic, vernacular sensibility evoked by the title (“Oh man, the times were like, super dark”) is little in evidence in Kevin Phillips‘ feature debut. For all its flaws, or rather for all the magnitude of its one massive flaw, it is more sincere than arch, and more earnest, certainly in its desire to get its makers onto the radar, than glib.

Damien Chazelle Talks Making A Musical For All Audiences With ‘La La Land’ In 45-Minute Talk
3 February 2017 11:41 AM, PST
In a few weeks, Damien Chazelle will cap off an incredible year at the Oscars, where the young director will likely spend the night seeing his dazzling “La La Land” scoop up a handful of honors, with the musical highly expected to win Best Picture.
When it was first announced, a musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone sounded like a cutesy little arthouse idea, something that would play to cinephiles, and maybe generate some heat with the mainstream, but few would’ve predicted the film would soar past $200 million worldwide (and counting).

Humankind hasn’t always had a great record when it comes to protecting our friends in the animal kingdom, but there have always been individuals and organizations fighting for those who don’t have a voice. New Petition Calls For Zack Snyder To Direct ‘The Batman’
3 February 2017 10:36 AM, PST
If there’s anything I’ve learned over the past year, it’s that the DC Films universe and Zack Snyder have some blindly dedicated fans. They’ll point to the box office numbers for “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” and “Suicide Squad” as evidence the franchise isn’t as bad as it’s perceived, and claim that the longer cut of ‘Dawn Of Justice’ fixes the problems with the theatrical version.

Things Get Ghostly For Kristen Stewart In New Trailer For Olivier Assayas’ ‘Personal Shopper’
3 February 2017 10:08 AM, PST
One of the more divisive films of last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Olivier Assayas‘ “Personal Shopper” is the director’s latest collaboration with Kristen Stewart. The duo previously paired on the celebrated, César winning “Clouds Of Sils Maria,” but this time around, they have something a bit more supernatural in mind.
Set in Paris, the ambitious story involves high fashion, spirits, and communicating with the dead.

While Iranian director Asghar Farhadi will not be attending the Academy Awards this year because of his protest of Donald Trump’s immigration ban, his film “The Salesman“ stands a good chance of taking the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. He recently sat down with notable TV director Victoria Hochberg (“Melrose Place“) to discuss his new film for a DGA podcast.

‘The Founder’ Director Disappointed By Michael Keaton Awards Season Snub, Says Film Wasn’t Given “Calculated” Campaign
3 February 2017 8:41 AM, PST
When it came to this year’s awards season, the belt-tightened The Weinstein Company seemed uncertain early on which horse to back. At first, it looked like they were going to push “The Founder,” especially when they moved the McDonald’s movie starring Michael Keaton from its initial August release date into the fall. But when it curiously didn’t show up at any of the fall festivals, “Lion” became their picture after it was warmly received Tiff.

Marvel Brings Together Teenage Clichés For The Cast Of ‘Runaways’
3 February 2017 8:25 AM, PST
Once slated to be a movie, “Marvel’s Runaways” has pivoted into a show on Hulu, growing the comic book brand’s small screen offerings to yet another outlet. But the advantage of more narrative space on TV is allowing us the viewer to (theoretically) have a closer relationship to the characters, who will be drawn with greater depth and complexity than they might get in a two-hour movie. But let’s hope these early descriptions of the core teenage team who find out their parents are evil, expand far beyond their clichés.

So-Called Sci-fi Romance ‘The Space Between Us’ Hates Love, Science & Its Audience [Review]
3 February 2017 7:49 AM, PST
“In space no one can hear you scream.” But in showings of “The Space Between Us,” everyone will hear you laugh at moments that are not meant to be funny with airless silence during its attempts at humor. This is a saccharine science fiction romance that doesn’t actually concern itself with science fiction or romance; instead, it’s the equivalent of astronaut ice cream, lacking in substance and crumbling to bits at the slightest pressure.

It’s All About Survival In The Super Bowl Spot For Hulu’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’
3 February 2017 7:31 AM, PST
Generally speaking, Super Bowl ads are for bright, shiny blockbusters or bright, shiny consumer products. No one actually wants to think much beyond whether to have more wings or more nachos. So it’s a bit surprising to see Hulu try and hook audiences with “The Handmaid’s Tale” during Sunday’s match between Football Team #1 and Football Team #2 (sorry, I don’t follow the NFL).
Elisabeth Moss leads the highly-anticipated adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s novel, set in a dystopian future, where a return to fundamentalist values sees women forced into sexual servitude.
