A beautiful renovation in Atherton, California,
by Giannetti Home, appearing in C Magazine

has captured our imagination with its
lovely modern farmhouse incarnation
(it began life as a traditional Midcentury Cape Cod!).
A closer look at this beautiful home's
living room reveals at least 7 design lessons
worth turning our attention toward.

Keep it Airy.
You'll notice the Giannettis interpret a
modern farmhouse look in a distinctive manner.
There's an absence of mill work and trim, which
lightens the weight of the room and evokes a
feeling of both modernity and informality.
Leaving off the baseboard, ceiling, window,
and door trim creates
calm, relaxed, less fussy spaces.
Even the atrium style lanterns are airy here!
Not in a precious, delicate way, but
in a well-designed architectural
and sculptural fashion, echoing the choice
of steel windows, which maximize
the natural light.
In this living room, we don't find any
complicated or dense floral arrangements,
which would not only be too formal
a choice, but which would also
detract from the easy breezy feel.

Balance and Symmetry.
Notice how the built-in shelves balance
the glass doors on the other side as
well as how the two sofas and floor lamps
bring a pleasing symmetry.

Add Simple Live Branches.
What happens when in lieu of fresh flowers
you accessorize with the perfect simplicity
of a fresh green leafy branch? Magic.
Branches add life and nature to this room and
possess an organic airy quality which
heighten the sense of natural beauty.
(I am very fortunate to live on a wooded
lot which affords beautiful branches
to bring inside, and many of you
don't have to travel far to find
a pretty, no-cost specimen!)

4.
Feathery-light Window Dressing or None at All.
The billowy linen drapery hung from a delicate
rod of iron works so beautifully to softly
frame the view without detracting.
Yet treating windows this way is tricky
when we may wish to block out a given view
or create privacy.
I think the key to achieving a similar look
is to choose materials which visually read
lightweight and filter-y, such as linen.
The hardware should not be visually
heavy or ornamental, but rather
refined, light, and simple.

5.
Mix of Tables.
This living room would lack interest if
the cocktail, coffee, and side tables in it
matched too closely, hailed from the
same era, or were made from the same
material.
Instead, the coffee/cocktail table has more of
a modern look, there is a mix of rustic and
refined antiques, and each piece appears to
be collected rather than purchased at once
for the living room's design.

6.
Layered Rugs.
I love this look Brooke Giannetti often uses
in her designs where a vintage rug is layered
over a larger, natural fiber one.
The look is less formal, adds an element of
beachy barefoot elegance, and just feels
more interesting.

This elegant ornamental table creates a
beautiful, feminine European-inspired
moment of pretty.

distressed, weathered, and antiqued finishes
of furnishings and objects in the room,
