"Make a difference."
Hurricane Harvey made landfall 30 miles north of HRI as a Category 4 hurricane on Friday, Aug. 25, causing devastating impacts in the Coastal Bend and beyond. HRI’s researchers, staff, students and facilities fared well through the storm. With everyone safe and accounted for, we have reopened for business.
That storm, and others that devastated the region during the severe 2017 hurricane season, emphasized the importance of our core mission at HRI: Ensuring a resilient and sustainable environment and economy in the Gulf of Mexico, especially for those that live along its coast. In the aftermath of the hurricane, HRI is planning to move forward on projects and partnerships that will help us to learn more about Harvey and its impacts.

HRI features six research groups spanning scientific, social science, policy and legal disciplines, each with projects specific to their areas of study. Together our researchers collaborate to solve even bigger problems that face the Gulf of Mexico.
