~99% of the people in the world are against discrimination, there’s no doubt about it. Obviously, discrimination is problematic. But when it concerns people’s opportunity to live better, to receive medical care and allow their children education – then it becomes a significant humanitarian issue that must be taken seriously.

Whole regions of the world “fall behind”, without the ability to develop themselves.

Most of us know these areas by names, like the favelas in Brazil or the slums in India.

In other countries such as Bangladesh or Nigeria, harsh living conditions (like malaria), uncommon in the emerging world, cause people death at very early ages.

Countless children in emerging countries drop out of school and cannot achieve wellbeing. In many of these places, the population is low-income and struggles to

subsist day by day. These people usually only use cash, making them invisible to financial institutes in terms of income statements or tax payments.

And well, the way women are treated in these places…. it’s better to say no more.

On the surface, people who live in developed countries truly believe that discrimination has been eradicated and everyone, everywhere, has an equal opportunity. But is this really the case?

In recent years, the world has become increasingly global. With just a few clicks, we can watch what is happening in real-time thousands of miles away, including in emerging countries. Thoughts, emotions and opinions can be easily shared among large communities through online posts, tweets, videos or occasionally photoshopped images.

On the one hand, this is an amazing phenomenon - technological advancement has created a real metaphysical world without boundaries. On the other hand, this progress often causes people to misinterpret others' worlds and indiscriminately pass criticism on their lifestyle and culture.

We must recognize that what may seem right for a country like Kenya, isn’t necessarily right for a country like Iceland, and what is right for El Salvador is far from right for Mongolia.

Still, there are some who are convinced that their words hold more value and that their truth is absolute. They believe the conduct in the place where they live is “the right one”, and whoever lives or sees things differently – is wrong, misleading and causes injustice in the world.

19th-century French author and literary critic, Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve, touched on this:

“Et Vigny, plus secret, Comme en sa tour d'ivoire, avant midi”

(And Vigny, more discreet, as if in his ivory tower, returned before noon).

The author first used the expression “ivory tower” to present Alfred de Vigny’s alienation from the “ordinary” people and their everyday problems.

Eva Strauss Ivory Tower

Many are unfamiliar with the problems that exist beyond their doorstep but they believe they are, and even dare tell others how to act and live.

To improve the world even in the slightest, we must recognize the difficulties that exist today. Several industries, some of the largest and most profitable in the world, lead the world economy and their interests drive entire economies.

Here are some examples from two huge industries that lead key sectors in the global economy – finance and insurance.

About 300 years ago, the first insurance company was established, and it had to “know” the person in order to insure him. The first group of insured people slowly helped form the first database, and based on the statistics of the claims, various heuristics came about to determine “who is the insured who is worth insuring”.

Scene At Lloyds, London, 1877.

The banks didn’t skip out on a process similar to that of the insurance market. Even when it comes to loans, you must assess the risk, “know who to give to”.

Both of these major fields, which led to the formation of the questionable “first world” concept – created structured ingrained discrimination, which continues to this day, even if they claim it is not so.

Well, discrimination does in fact still exist, and the engines of enterprises run on this injustice.

The main shift that has happened in the last centuries, is that now clusters (entire groups characterized by gender, race, place of residence, education, etc.) are discriminated against, as opposed to a specific person as in the past.

Outwardly, it may seem that progress has been made, that everyone has equal opportunity, but the opposite is true; People who were once discriminated – are discriminated against even now.

Government regulation currently prohibits discriminating against a black-skinned person. However, it does not at all prevent the discrimination of that same person because of their home address or zip code!

To fully understand what this means, let’s look at an example. A white person requests some kind of finance or insurance related service, and their home is in a neighborhood where the main population is black. This person will (likely) be assessed by the insuring or lending body as black, which will act as a significant consideration in deciding whether to grant them the service and if so, at what price.

We will present a few more examples of the existing discrimination against clusters, all of which are documented and appear in the attached links:

Discrimination on the basis of an academic degree – Drivers without a bachelor’s degree are required to pay at least 10% more for their car insurance, as opposed to college alumni.

Discrimination on the basis of marital status – The marital status of the service applicant affects pricing. For example, a single person (God forbid) will pay a higher premium fee than a married one.

Discrimination on the basis of age – Drivers under the age of 25 and over the age of 70 pay more than those in other age groups.

Discrimination on the basis of race/ethnicity – Latino and African American borrowers are charged more for mortgage basis points. Insured black drivers are required to pay up to 70% more [than white drivers], regardless of their driving history, part in society, or income.

Discrimination on the basis of place of residence – 67% of car insurance companies charge a 10% higher premium from an insured person whose place of residence is located in a zip code identified with “colored” neighborhoods.

Discrimination on the basis of occupation – Blue-collar workers and low-income professionals are required to pay a higher premium for car insurance than white-collar workers or high-income professionals.

As we continue to use the models and tools available in the market today for risk assessment, the discrimination against entire populations will continue, hurting their chances of giving their children an education, purchasing health services for their family, and making progress beyond survival.

Remember, companies must use discriminating tools every day to assess risks. They have no other way of doing so, and regulation on its part allows it.

As researchers and technologists, the question of how to eliminate discrimination against entire sectors has preoccupied us since 2015. We have extensively searched for a solution to serving a population of two billion adults who have no access to the financial and insurance world (called “unbanked”). About 90% of this population is constantly denied by financial service providers, simply because they cannot provide any proof of income, account transactions or credit history. Alternatively, these people most likely belong to one of the regularly discriminated groups.

How do we solve this problem? By avoiding clusters and through personal examination of each individual, disregarding prejudice based on gender, race, religion, skin color, face texture, tattoos, profession, age, place of residence, or any other personally identifiable detail.

After years of academic research and technological development, we believe the way has been found to grant every person an equal opportunity without any discrimination. Using a single anonymous selfie and some basic data, Facetrom allows banks and insurance companies to increase their number of customers by hundreds of percent (!), especially those currently suffering from discrimination as described above. Facetrom allows ~3 times more people to buy an education for their children, health, and insurance – for a better life and brighter future.

Facetrom - never give up on anyone!

What are right decisions? How can one choose correctly? And do all of us have the tools that qualify us to make our best, optimal decisions?

According to the theory of evolution, it is necessary for humans - and animals - to be able to reproduce, and for the newborns to survive. It is for this reason that decision-making must accommodate these conditions.

The human body was lanned in a way that behaviors and actions taken, concerning reproduction and survival, are controlled biologically.

Human behaviors adapt to changing times and environments, but always rely on evolutionary roots to reproduce and survive.

Here are a few examples:

Behaviors of self defense:

Self defense is a natural, congenital inclination for the survival of an organism. Pain, for example, drives the individual to back down from life-threatening situations, and fear is extremely important to avoid risks. Fear releases adrenaline, which in turn amplifies certain senses, helping to find a safe place to go to. Fear keeps one from unnecessarily being in dark places, avoiding threatening people or violent people, or touching dangerous, sharp objects, sudden loud noises and more. In anything related to self defense from other humans wanting to harm us, our faces are the main source of information. Our faces are a reflection of our biology, and they help us know Who we can get close to, and who we should avoid (see article - “The connection between biology and appearance/face structure”).

Behaviors of protection from infectious diseases:

The WHO (World Health Organization) estimates that around 15 million people die from infectious diseases each year, especially caused by diseases transferred from person to person, such as the flu, tuberculosis and AIDS. The natural selection system for survival has developed behavioral preventive mechanisms to help avoid infections and diseases. The avoidance can come in the form of hearing infection-related suspicious noises, such as coughing or sneezing, or visual signs of infection, such as sores, mucus, skin disease, facial deformities, dirt, contaminated food, putrid smells and more. Self defense and disease prevention systems are physiological and psychological, working together on picking up clues to risks and preventing them. Even choosing a mate is influenced by disease prevention and a person will refrain from people who might transfer infections or diseases to them. Many significant decisions are made to defend against diseases and infections. As said, the face reflects the person’s biology and immune system, and makes a person refrain from contact accordingly.

Hormones:

Decision-making is affected by hormonal levels. Hormones are important chemical messengers in the human body, efficiently transferring signals and instructions from one array of cells to another. Over 50 different hormones have been identified in humans and they affect almost every cell, tissue and organ of the entire body, including growth, development, metabolism, the equilibrium of our internal environment (“homeostasis”), sexual functions and fertility. The hormonal concentrations affect our personality structure and behavior throughout our lifetime. Hormones are produced in every person, but are found in different levels when comparing males and females, and even different individuals.

Testosterone - male and female fetuses differ in their concentrations of testosterone. The amount of hormone is determined as of the eighth week of pregnancy. This and many other hormones take part in the development of individual differences in behavior between each person, and also in the variances between genders. Testosterone can make a difference in behaviors such as: the level of aggressive behavior, financial potential abilities, the ability to feel empathy, social integration, risk-taking and more. The levels of testosterone and other hormones are reflected in one’s face, a fact that enables potential behavior recognition, making a person want to come closer, or to avoid the person being examined.

Choosing mates:

Acquiring a mate is a survival, evolutionary need to pass down genes to the next generations, and as such, there is a huge importance in choosing the right one. Who are the best mates? The ones with the best biological compatibility, creating a strong biological system in the child, making them able to survive life’s conditions. How can an individual identify their best mate? Using the face. The human face allows us to receive biological signals required to find the best biologically-suited mate (see articles: ‘Our Face as a Key to Love’, ‘Attractiveness and Beauty, and Everything in Between’, ‘Faces and first impressions’). People have developed cautionary actions in choosing a mate to reduce risks, and they will tend to stay away from people who can harm their health or hurt them, physically or emotionally, and tend to connect with people that seem healthy, powerful and have strong genes. The attraction, or their lack of, to potential mates, is influenced by the evolutionary need for reproduction and survival even if there is no intention of giving birth; this is a biological decision embedded in every organism.

Facetrom can make an optimal, biologically-based match between two potential mates using pictures of their faces.

Skills and abilities:

Can a person choose their own skills?

Does the 10,000 hour rule, stating that any person can be good at anything they wish, if they just practice for at least 10,000 hours, hold true?

Can marathon runners also be Olympic weightlifters? Can a person with no charisma (the ability to affect the environment and inspire support in strangers) practice and become charismatic?

Studies show that a person cannot choose their own skills and what to excel at;

but rather, it is the person’s biological system that is the ultimate decider.

For example:

Can a person’s physical abilities be suited for aerobic sports as well as anaerobic, is that same person more suited for a team or individual sport, are they more suited to extreme or traditional sports. As proof - a person with high testosterone levels will seek thrills in fields that are considered to be of higher risk, or those that require physical. In order to succeed in aerobic exercise, a person must have the ability to exert great physical effort for a long time (not everyone can) ,and more

Leadership and management skills - not everyone can be a good manager. A good manager is charismatic and can influence people, have organizational skills, financial skills more. We are born with these abilities and are reflected in one’s face.

People are born with unique biological characteristics, influencing their behaviors, choices and decision-making.

Evolution dictates a person’s decisions and behaviors in life’s most significant times. It is what allows the organism to reproduce and to survive for generations.

Why is that? What is the benefit and importance in that?

According to evolution the essence of life is to reproduce and survive.

In order to survive humans must have the ability to differentiate between a friend or a foe, stay protected from dangerous individuals, recognize who can be trusted, stay away from diseases and more.

This information allows us to see from whom to be protected and with whom to get close, you must be accessible, exposed and clear at any given moment. The human body evolved according to these requirements as the face contains the most information needed for survival. Face recognition is a primary and early evolutionary need, as seen in newborn babies who are particularly interested in human faces. They react to them immediately and especially to their mother who they depend on to survive.

A third of the human brain is wired to recognize faces. For example, the lower temporal lobe has an area called the Fusiform face Atea or FFA, which uniquely responds to faces. Also, there are neurons dedicated to certain people we know and are activated when we recognize them. As a result, Dr. Rodrigo Cian Quiroga of the University of Leicester in Britain called these neurons "Jennifer Aniston neurons."

But why does the brain dedicate so many resources into assigning large areas, cells, and neurons to recognize faces compared to other objects? This is because the face contains important and evolutionarily critical information. The face allows us to identify a person, to know whether we can rely on him, the face allows us to know the mood of the other, his gender, his age, his family closeness, his health, his parental suitability and even his developmental and genetic history.

Research shows a connection between facial structure and genetics.

For example, the PAX3 gene, which affects the structure and location of the nose, and mutations in the gene may develop into the warrensburg syndrome, which is well seen by the observer and suggests a genetic health problem.

Symmetry in the face shows the ability to cope with environmental data during development and the ability to cope with stressors and infections during development. People differ in their internal immune systems and their ability to maintain their steady development under environmental conditions.

Hormones also affect the appearance of face and body. Humans begin their lives as a female, but the amount of exposure to the hormone testosterone determines whether male or female affects the appearance of the face. Hormones also reflect clues about fertility and the availability of paired energy.

As science has shown, a structure and facial appearance is shaped by the individual biology and teaches about genetic quality, hormonal balance, health status and the information required to know how to deal with those who face it, to reproduce and survive for generations to come.

Judgments about their personality, traits and, in fact, we can tell an entire story about them.

What is the power and significance of a first impression?

A first impression, at its core, is evolutionary. It protects us and is critical for survival. The process of a first impression takes a tenth of a second (Willis 2006). It’s activity is done in the brain. The brain uses two main areas: the amygdala and the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC). The amygdala process the sensual input and responds to social cues, and the PCC differentiates between harmful and non-harmful stimuli, works with emotion and memory, links life experiences and makes decisions. (Schiller, 2009). The fact that we have the ability to make an impression quickly and immediately proves the importance of the first impression, and its evolutionary need. A first impression allows for immediate action with the minimal exertion (Schaller 2008). The importance of a first impression is so critical that it begins in early childhood and does not require years of social experience. (Cogsdill 2014).

The face is hugely significant in creating a first impression (Schaller, 2008). The ability to glean information from a face is important for social interactions and enables communication (Pascalis 2009). The face exposes the developmental and genetic history of an individual, and teaches about their familial closeness, healthy, parental matching and more. (Moalem 2014), (Rhodes 2006), (Barber 1995). Facial structure is deeply coded in an individual’s biology. (Chatterjee 2009).

As early as the 19th century, Cesare Lombroso, a criminologist and anthropologist, argued that different crimes have unique facial traits. He even provided “scientific” evidence in criminal cases. (Oosterhof, 2008).

From an evolutionary standpoint, the final goal is multiplication and survival of our genes. Therefore, the ability to quickly recognize those who may hurt us in any way is critical. (Schaller 2008).

It has been shown that peoples’ first impression is trustworthy and accurate. (Carlson 2010)(Schaller 2008). Women, for example, are very careful in selecting a mate due to the effort of creating a fetus, carrying it and caring for it. Therefore the importance of a first impression is critical; evolution prefers that a woman miss a good mate due to a mistaken impression, rather than mating with a partner that will harm the breeding and survival abilities of her offspring. (Schaller 2008). Another example can be seen in research that successfully predicted political elections, after subjects looked at pictures of candidates for just one second. (Todorov 2005).

The ability to analyze at a high accuracy based on a first impression is universal and is not dependent on culture, language or race, but is a human, evolutionary trait. In every culture, the first impression serves to select attractive mates, good matches, quality of health, intelligence, friendliness, polluting illnesses, (Zebrowitz 2011), and competition for resources. Protection from threats to health and breeding, avoidance of cheaters and thieves, (Schaller 2008), selection of leaders (Rule 2008) and more.

As such, using each individual’s unique face, a first impression is made which is critical to evolutionary survival and social interactions.

Researches from evolutionary psychology and neurobiology proved that the androgens are influencing the embryo during the pregnancy, the androgens influence the nerve system, immune system, personality characteristics, physical structure, behavior and almost all sides of the future life of the embryo.

The last studies proved that the physical structure reflects the embryo androgens during the pregnancy, in fact the way of the physical structure design is because the amount of androgens that the embryo was exposed. Therefore, it is possible to measure the basic condition of androgens and immune system through the physical structure in humans.

Facetrom's research team dedicated years to understand the relation between the human face and the biological system.

We found out that there is a close relationship between the two. After further research, we realized that the biological system affects our behavior – therefore, we analyzed the relationship between facial structure and people’s decisions. To achieve this, we had to delve into the facial structure and understand its meaning. We would like to give you some key facts we discovered during our fascinating process.

The human facial structure is determined at embryo stage in the uterus at the age of 7 weeks.

The facial structure is shaped by our internal biological systems (e.g. Immune system). Our biological systems status, as well as their strength affect our appearance (see Facetrom blog).

The variety of human faces helps us to recognize our family, distinguish our friends from our enemies and even receive signals from a potential spouse. For example - when looking at someone for the first time, we conclude on the first impression after 0.39 seconds. Someone next to us looks at the same person and gets a totally different impression. How can it be? Why does it happen?

In order to understand the relation between facial structure and biological systems, Facetrom created a biological profile to help people make optimal decisions after conducting a comprehensive research.

IMPORTANT - the entire research process disregards people's racial indicators such as skin color, hair color, eye color etc.

During the research, Facetrom examined more than 1,000 subjects from various demographic layers, personal status, and geographic locations. The subjects were picked from 7 different academic institutes as well as comprehensive internet search to recruit a population from different demographic locations. Facetrom examined and tested more than 200 facial features and analyzed their biological parameters and their selection process. The results are amazing - we discovered the key parameters influencing decisions.

For example - When we tested users for spouse selection, we discovered the key parameters considered when selecting a spouse and how we define attractiveness in practice.

As we all know - men and women are different and therefore the results are aligned with that assumption. Our results indicate that women measure attractiveness using twice as many parameters compared to men.

Facetrom's results reveal the reason which makes one person consider someone attractive (while other people in the same room might disagree). Now we understand why people's biological needs make them behave the way they do and be attracted to certain people.

Facetrom predicts at 89% level of accuracy the biological matching between people only by their looks.

The results are valid worldwide regardless of culture, race, religion, geographic location etc.

These results are applicable in a range of ways such as spouse screening, teammate selection, the match between team and potential team leader and even improved commercials.

As science has shown, the structure and appearance of the face is shaped by individual biology and teaches about the genetic quality, hormonal balance, health status, and containing the information required for the person to know how to act against those who standing in front of him, to reproduce and survive for generations.

Is it possible to identify social behavior through the structure of the face?

The prevalence of violence and criminality in societies around the world has prompted researchers to look for biological signs that predict and cause this behaviour. The progress of neurochemistry, biology, imaging technology, and other fields of science have shown that many mental disorders such as violence, delinquency, connected to disruption of brain activity due to genetic changes and chemical imbalances.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, since Lombroso who was considered the father of modern criminology, researchers from various disciplines have attempted to find the characteristics of potential criminals. Many studies have been made over the past two decades, indicate that there are biological risk factors that significantly increase the likelihood of people committing crime and violence during their life, such as genetics and biology[i].

Behavior genetics (BG) is a field that examines the genetic effects on human behavior. Behavioral geneticists working hard to identify the specific genes involved in human behavior. There are evidences that almost all the behaviors studied are under significant influence of the genes, and the effect tends to increase as we grow up, it was also found that human behavior is influenced by a large number of genes[ii].
An example of a number of genes that have been associated with criminal behavior

Warrior-gene" MAOA"

It is a gene that controls the enzyme activity and is responsible for releasing chemicals to the brain, including dopamine and serotonin. It is called "Monoamine Oxidase A” or "MAOA". In recent years scientists have found a connection between the MAOA gene low-activity and violent behaviour, therefore the nickname was given to this gene called "warrior gene". The MAOA gene has been proven to be an important predictor of antisocial behaviour[iii].

Studies indicate that the low activity variation of the MAOA gene causes a risk of mental disorders related to anti-social characteristics, aggression, violence, and increased risk of committing a crime. The reason, according to the researchers, is that the MAOA gene breaks down chemical substances in the brain that are involved in several aspects of a person's behavior and aggression[iv].

In addition, it was found that there is a connection between lack of MAOA with impulsive aggression because of a genetic mutation. Types of behavior that occurred include impulsive aggression, arson, rape attempts, and exhibitionism[v].

CDH-13
A connection was found between genotype CDH13 and impulsive violent behaviour[vi].
Dat1 gene
Studies have found that a specific version of gene transporter 1 (DAT1) of dopamine contributed to delinquent behavior[vii].

DRD2 gene
The researchers also found that DRD2 was a risk factor for violent delinquency[viii].
Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) + Androgen receptors (AR)
It was found that the variants of the Androgen receptor gene (AR) and gene catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMPT) an important role in aspects of emotional and social behavior. It was found that mental behavior has a genetic basis and delinquent behavior is behavior that directly affected by several genes[ix], as well hormones have a connection to criminal behavior.

Hormones
Studies have found that people with high levels of testosterone are more violent and aggressive. The researchers found a positive connection between testosterone and aggression in both men and women[x]. Testosterone has a positive correlation with aggression and crime[xi].

A combination of genes and hormones
Genotype MAOA and testosterone may have an interactive effect on the antisocial behavior of adolescents and adults[xii]. The male hormone testosterone exacerbates even more the behavior of men who carry the MAOA mutation.

The unconscious system affects the decisions
Daniel Kahneman (Nobel Prize laureate in economics) argues that the unconscious system (System 1, as Kahneman called her) affects the conscious one (System 2, as Kahneman called her), and not only does some of the thinking not under our control, it turns out that the unconscious system influences the controlled decisions and the awareness. When biology belongs to the unconscious "system 2" and causes to the behaviors[xiii].

Facial Structure
The human face is an array of physical characteristics that make each of us unique and distinct.
As we already mentioned in the previous articles:

Research by Facetrom company
Machine learning analysis that was conducted by Facetrom - which specializes in predicting the behavior of people by facial structure, Facetrom examined the technology in more than 1M individual, a clear and significant distinction was found more than 90% between the group of criminals and the non-criminal group.

Based on all the various studies, it has been shown that behaviors are influenced by the biological structure, as well as the facial structure is affected by the biological structure. Because of this, the behaviors that are affected by the biological structure will be reflected in the facial structure.
