Great videos exposing the isolation children often feel within the Chasidish communitie
However I do want to say that in a recent video a girl was asked about the presence of latinos or blacks in the Chasidish school system - if you are making these videos you are aware that the community and schools is just for ulta-Ortho
Even in Modern Orthodox Jewish schools that DO teach general studies you don't have Latinos or Blacks unless they are Jewish, and that is fine and legal because it is a religious private institutio

Yaffed has already been helpful in forcing the Hasidic schools... to listen to the silent majority of parents to provide a better education.
However after seeing some of their content I have realized tha...t they are run by children, and simply aren't the right people to be making this case.
For all those trying to get their story out I'd suggest doing it through other means, because doing it through Yaffed will not get your story the respect it deserves. It has become very clear to me that they only care about there own agendas not you. הצג עוד

Chancellor Carmen Farina does what she knows best: shifting the blame around.
Now, after more than 2 & 1/2 years of supposedly investigating Yeshivas, she claims it's the state's responsibility to enforce the law.
It's not. It's her responsibility and it was her responsibility since she learned of it more than three years ago.
Hasidic leaders in New York don't know how lucky they are that it's Yaffed who is leading the charge for greater oversight of Yeshivas. We have not emphasized the corporal punishment in Yeshivas or the teachings that gays must be stoned, as is reported in this segment on religious schools in London.
All we're asking for is that Yeshivas provide the minimum education required by law. But if the Yeshiva leaders keep resisting, it's a matter of time before outside groups take a closer look at what is being taught in Yeshivas and how children are being disciplined.

It takes a village to raise a child.
Philanthropists have a moral responsibility to ensure their money doesn't enable depriving kids of an education and raising a generation of people who will not have the skills to earn a living and provide for their families.

"It is more than time that these Chasidic schools join the ranks of most other yeshivas and provide a decent secular education for their children. There is nothing in Judaism that forbids the study of Limudei Chol (secular studies)."

Our billboard today in its full glory.
Yesterday we took the unusual step of protesting an event that took place in the heart of Boro Park.
Every year the Boro Park JCC hosts a legislative breakfast to strengthen the community's ties with government officials. This year they chose to exploit the event to benefit the status quo in Hasidic Yeshivas.
To that end, they honored Yeshiva graduates who have reached varying degrees of success, in order to falsely pretend that it's the Yeshivas that prepared them for this s...uccess.
The reality is that most Hasidic boys' Yeshivas teach little or no English and math and no science, history, and geography at all.. We are well aware that some Hasidic Yeshiva graduates do succeed anyway. This is not unique to the Hasidic community. There are many instances of people managing to pull themselves out of poverty despite enormous challenges.
This event was attempting to portray them as the norm and to attribute that success to the Hasidic Yeshiva education. We too celebrate the success by Hasidic Yeshiva graduates, but we recognize that they are the exception, not the rule.
One of the government officials that was honored was David Hansell, commissioner of Administration for Children's Services, the branch of NYC government charged with investigating child abuse, including educational neglect. We felt that it was a conflict of interest for him to collaborate with a group that is trying to cover up neglect, at a time when investigations by the NYC Department of Education could result in a referral to his agency that would require action on his part against the very people he shared the dais with on Sunday. We believe he should not be cozying up today with the people he might be investigating tomorrow.
If you have time to listen to a podcast, listen to this one.
The radio show host, Dovid Lichtenstein an influential ultra-Orthodox philanthropist, repeatedly refers to people being denied an education as having their "arms cut off," recognizing the long term harm it causes to the individual.
He also says he asked 50(!) Yeshivas to come on his show to explain why they don't provide a proper education, but none agreed to come on the show!
***URGENT: Your Action is Needed***
This Sunday, NYC Administration for Children's Services- ACS Commissioner David Hansell is scheduled to take part in a scheme to cover-up educational neglect.
By participating in an event organized by the Boro Park Jewish Community Council to "honor" Boro Park Yeshiva graduates, he is abandoning his duty to the children who are being denied an education in those institutions.
...According to ACS, “failure to support a child’s educational needs” is defined as child neglect. By lending his name to this blatant attempt to cover up the lack of education in many Boro Park boys yeshivas, Commissioner Hansell is violating the mission of the organization he heads.
Join us in calling on him to cancel his participation in this stunt. Join us in demanding that he investigate these yeshivas and the BP JCC's role in the cover-up.

Yaffed's Executive Director sat down for an interview with the New York Foundation, one of a handful of foundations who generously, but more importantly courageously, fund our work.
Like their page, and consider interning for them this summer:

Assemblywoman Ellen C. Jaffee questioned Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia on what the State Education Department is doing to improve secular education in Hasidic Yeshivas.

New York State Education Department Commissioner MaryEllen Elia has some explaining to do. Where has she been for the past three years as dozens of Yeshiva graduates have come forward and alleged that they did not receive a secular education?
This is outrageous. NYSED Commissioner MaryEllen Elia is denying our experience of being robbed of an education (certainly in high school).
Yaffed is
contacting Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Thirty months have gone by and it is clear that when it's politically convenient, Mayor Bill de Blasio will sell out children who are being robbed of an education and of a future.
This will go down as one of the greatest injustices committed in recent New York City history.
Are Modern Orthodox Jewish schools under attack?
Some Hasidic leaders would have them believe they are, so as to rally them in opposing Yaffed.
This former Hasidic Yeshiva student who transferred to a modern-Orthodox school sets the record straight.
