This is a big idea we've been throwing around for a while. Help us reimagine libraries as stewards of open knowledge about the local community. Head over to this link and click "applaud". I know, I know. Asking that is stupid and very Facebook-like, but we're told it helps.

Folks, great event happening in two weeks in SF! LocalWiki.org & Code for San Francisco are partnering to edit the city! Please join us at Code for America to learn more about LocalWiki and work with others to document San Francisco. There'll be lunch & child care provided (just let us know), as well.

Join LocalWiki and Code for San Francisco for a day of sharing knowledge on government services! From bike lanes to healthcare, you may be surprised what resources our local government helps to provide. You may even surprise all of us with what you know!
We'll be adding our knowledge to the San Francisco LocalWiki (http://localwiki.net/sf), a collaborative community website where people share all kinds of information about the city of San Francisco. Bring a laptop if you have... one, but we'll also have plenty to work on together.
This is a free event! Childcare and lunch (vegan & gluten-free available) will be provided. We'll have expert LocalWikians on hand to help participants.

You may not realize it, but the Internet is more like a shopping mall than a city. And that sucks. Check out this great talk by Sue Gardner on building the public internet, with shout-outs to LocalWiki.org & Metafilter!

We're hard at work on internationalization support for the new LocalWiki! Want to translate LocalWiki into your language? Here's how!
1. Go to http://transifex.com and sign up for an account. Skip the "organization" part after signup.
2. Go to https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/localwiki/ and click "join team"
3. Create a new language or edit an existing language....
4. Please use the *language only*, non-regional, language option. For instance, "ja" rather than "ja-JP" or "de" rather than "de-CH"
"While none of them is an urban expert, each has specific knowledge about their place. That child or homeless person or grandmother can bring their knowledge of place straight into the center."
Great piece by urban theorist Saskia Sassen on the theoretical power of LocalWiki (but she hadn't yet heard about us!)
