The mission is approaching and we are starting the countdown!
There are eighth days until the scientific mission starts, and it's time to get to know our crew.
Today - Yiftah Curiel, the mission commander:
Yiftah, 44, lives in Jaffa with his wife and three daughters. Yiftah is a diplomat in the Israeli Foreign Ministry, and has worked there for the past 15 years. Over the years he has held positions in Ethiopia, Argentina and London. He currently manages the Department of Digital Diplomacy in the Ministry.
Yiftah says:
“Space has interested me for many years. As a diplomat, I realize that the issues that unite countries most are related to global issues such as the environment, water, technology and education.
Space at its core is a global issue, and I think that this field has a real potential to unite us around an important, perhaps critical, issue that interests almost all of us and embodies the adventurous nature of man and the hope of a common future for humanity. I am humbled by the opportunity to work with D-Mars' amazing team on this important project.”
“Work as a diplomat calls for good teamwork under varied and sometimes very challenging circumstances, far from the mother base, and caring for your fellow co-workers is held at the highest regard. These values share quite a bit in common with the values I believe are important on an analog mission to Mars.”
Yiftah and his family are travel enthusiasts, and recently returned from a year long trip around the world.

יפתח קוריאל, בן 44, מתגורר ביפו, נשוי +3 בנות. דיפלומט במשרד החוץ הישראלי ב-15 השנים האחרונות. במהלך השנים מילא תפקידים באתיופיה, בארגנטינה ובלונדון. כיום מנהל את המחלקה לדיפלומטיה דיגטלית במשרד.
יפתח מספר:
תחום החלל מעניין אותי שנים רבות. אני נוכח לדעת בחיים הדיפלומטיים שלעתים קרובות נושאים שמאחדים מדינות סביב אינטרס משותף קריטי - קשורים להיבטים גלובליים כגון איכות סביבה, מים, טכנולוגיות וחינוך. חקר החלל הוא אולי הנושא הגלובלי ב"ה" הידיעה, ואני חושב שלתחום זה פוטנציאל אמיתי לאחד אותנו סביב נושא חשוב, אולי קריטי, המעניין כמעט את כולנו, ומגלם את יצר ההרפתקנות של האדם ואת התקווה לזמן בו נעסוק בעתידנו המשותף כאנושות, אני מרגיש בר מזל לעבוד יחד עם הצוות המדהים של DMARS על הפרוייקט החשוב הזה."
מעבר לזה, העבודה במשרד החוץ מציבה את הצורך בעבודת צוות, בתנאים מגוונים ולעתים מאתגרים מאד, הרחק מבסיס האם, תוך דאגה האחד לשני לפני הכל. ערכים אלה חולקים לא מעט במשותף עם המשימה האנאלוגית למאדים.
יפתח ומשפחתו חובבי טיולים, ולאחרונה חזרו מפסק זמן של שנה במהלכה טיילו בעולם.

call for one of a kind scientific opportunity!
Between 15Oct-15Nov2020, the Austrian Space Forum – in cooperation with the Israel Space Agency as the host agency and D-MARS – will conduct an integrated Mars analog field mission in the Negev Desert in Israel. The expedition will be carried out in a Martian terrestrial analog and directed by a dedicated Mission Support Center in Austria. A small field crew of highly trained analog astronauts with spacesuit simulators will cond...uct experiments preparing for future human and robotic Mars exploration missions.
The Austrian Space Forum invites the scientific community to submit experiment proposals in the fields of geosciences, engineering, planetary surface operations, life sciences including astrobiology, human factors.
