Gabe Pont - Joint Program '20 - Sociology and Bible - Marlboro, NJ - During winter break, I traveled to Amman, Jordan with Columbia's Office of the University Chaplain through the Kraft Global Fellows Program. The trip was focused on interfaith dialogue, and we met with numerous different religious and humanitarian groups working in Jordan. We also traveled to Petra, Jerash, and a number of other holy sites. It was amazing to interact intimately with that piece of the world, and I hope to journey back soon. #HumansofLC

Ben Gersten - Joint Program '18 - Neuroscience and Linguistics and Bible - Roseland, NJ - For the past year I have been doing research at Columbia University Medical Center on the neural and behavioral mechanisms of Time Perception. Time intervals define all aspects of our life. Time helps us answer questions like, "In how many minutes do we need to leave the apartment before we'll be late to work?" or "How long will it be until the next Subway arrives?" Our lab asks if there... are patterns in the way we perceive time and what parts of our brain are involved in figuring this out. Last summer my work at the lab was sponsored by the Amgen Foundation, a biotechnology/pharmaceutical firm in Los Angeles. Through the program, I received mentorship, GRE prep classes, housing, and a food stipend. The Amgen foundation connected me with other scientists and gave me tools and skills I use almost daily at the lab. Next year I will be doing research on sensory cell biology of the inner ear at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, DC. If it were not for this opportunity, I would not have had the skills that my new job was looking for, and if it were not for the ability to have a rigorous science education through the Joint Program, I wouldn't have found my passion as a science researcher. #InternsofLC

Barnard and JTS continually challenge me spiritually, intellectually, and personally. Within a pluralistic framework, my friends teach me new ways to grow Jewishly. The close bond between students in this program means I always have positive role models who give me advice, and I can be a mentor and change this place for the better." #HumansofLC

It is with deep sorrow that we share the tragic news that Hannah Weiss and her family were killed in a plane crash on Sunday. Hannah was a List College sophomore in the Joint program with Columbia University. She was a wonderful student, great friend, strong leader, and a beloved member of our community. Above all, she was deeply passionate about the environment. Hannah worked tirelessly to secure composting and other initiatives at JTS and inspired us all to intensify our individual efforts to protect our planet. She will be sorely missed.
Yehi zikhra barukh. May her memory serve as a blessing for us all.
