Since the launch of 3D photos last fall, we’ve seen people embrace this new way of sharing memories with a fun, lifelike dimension in News Feed—both on mobile and web—and VR, where it’s best enjoyed. Today, we’re announcing three new features for 3D photos on Facebook as we continue to grow the product: 3D photos in Stories, 3D photos creation on the web, and 3D photos creation on Android (in the next month). Since he first experimented with 360 photography a few years back, community member Aris Christou from Enframe Studio has created beautiful pieces to share. In the future, he hopes to combine traditional 360 photography with computer generated graphics and build experiences in VR. Check out his interview below:
Q. What is your background in 360 photography?
I am a big fan of Facebook 360 and I’m honored to [share] a bit more about my work and involvement with 360 photography.... My name is Aris Christou and I am a professional photographer based in Greece. I’ve been shooting 360 photos the last couple years.
Q. How did you get started with it?
I first began experimenting with 360 photography in late 2010’s when I started shooting multiple photos and then stitching them together to create panoramic images. In 2015 I discovered the creative potential of camera drones. At some point I stumbled upon an article about 360 aerial photography and that’s when I decided to experiment with it.
Q. What was your inspiration behind this?
Zakynthos Shipwreck is one of the most photographed beaches in Greece. Accessible only by sea, it gives you the idea of hugeness and perfection. Although I have photographed this famous beach numerous times, I decided to create a 360 panorama photo using a drone, so the viewer can see the entire surrounding of the magnificent landmark.
Q. What program/camera/hardware did you use to make it?
Most of my 360 photos are done using a DJI Phantom drone. I occasionally use a Nikon DSLR camera to shoot some of the panoramas. The Zakynthos Shipwreck 360 photo was shot with a Phantom 4 Pro Drone. I process the photos in Adobe Lightroom and then stitch them using Autopano. I then re-process the exported panorama in Adobe Photoshop for the final corrections.
Q. How long did it take to complete?
The process of creating 360 photos can take from a few hours to several days. It is a very time-consuming process. However, if you love what you do and you do it with passion, every moment spent is valuable time. The Zakynthos Shipwreck 360 photo took me about 2 days for the final 360 panorama.
Q. What are you looking to improve in your future projects?
The biggest advantage in 360 photography is that you can really capture the mood of a place. The potential is endless and opens up new possibilities for photographers and artists to really push the genre. The natural evolution of 360 photography is VR. Here you can combine panoramas with added effects and in addition a 360 photo can be viewed with a VR headset. In the future I would like to combine a traditional 360 photo with computer generated graphics and build experiences in VR.
Q. What's one piece of advice you'd give to someone to get a shot/to create something like this?
Don’t worry too much about hardware, but focus on learning new creative techniques instead. Go out there, put your camera on ordinary or extremely weird places, and see what it looks like.
