Daily update: 19/07/19 – Day 17
Good Afternoon Tour followers! We hope you are all ready for one final shabbat with Tour 19 out in Israel!
The Shoah (Holocaust)... plays a large part in so many narratives of the modern Jewish people, which is why our madrichim, Eli and Vic ran a thought-provoking programme to prepare the chanichim for their visit to Yad Vashem today. With the Holocaust being such a prominent and recent tragedy in Jewish history, Yad Vashem can understandably be an emotional and moving place to visit, so, preparation is essential to ensure an inspiring, educational and thought-provoking day.
Our JLGB Shinishinim told us “This year is the 60th anniversary of the ‘Yom Ha’Shoa Law’ in Israel.” That law states:
“On Yom Ha’Shoah there will be a two-minute silence throughout the country in which every workplace will stop work and all traffic on the roads will cease. Memorial ceremonies, public rallies, and ceremonies will be held in army camps and educational institutions. The flags on public buildings will be lowered to half-mast and all broadcasts will reflect the spirit of the day.”
Through a guided tour, survivor testimonies and using the Yad Vashem online archive, Tour 19 learnt about the work Yad Vashem does to reunite families torn apart in the Holocaust and raise awareness to ensure this atrocity is never repeated.
Some of the sites they visited on their tour included the Holocaust History Museum, Children's Memorial, The Museum of Holocaust Art, a synagogue, a research institute, Educational Centre and outdoor commemorative sites such as the Valley of the Communities and the Righteous amongst the Nations. It was a challenging day but everyone believed it was an important experience to have shared together as they then could discuss their thoughts and feelings as a group.
Sadly, this evening brings with it Tour 19’s final Shabbat in Israel, but it will certainly be one to remember. They will welcome Shabbat in the holiest Jewish city in the world surrounded by thousands of locals all joining hands with complete strangers to sing and dance. Continuing with a traditional theme, the chanichim will enjoy a Friday night dinner and Oneg Shabbat with all their favourite Jewish dishes: chicken soup (obviously “not as good as mum’s”), roast potatoes, and chicken. Can you imagine a better way to spend their final Shabbat in Israel?
The participants were incredibly overwhelmed and delighted with their surprise messages from home, which they read together with much emotion before Kabbalat Shabbat. Thank you to all the parents for writing them and sending them to us, it was so appreciated by all.
Stay tuned for your next exciting update as Tour 19 ventures into the final leg of their Israel experience. We’ll see you on Sunday, but for now its Shabbat Shalom from us!
Please share this post and tell your family and friends to follow this group to find out everything about the adventures of JLGB Israel Tour 2019.
