The AGU decision also renders the organization's own sponsorship policy meaningless, since the policy explicitly bars AGU from receiving funds from companies that disseminate misinformation about scie...nce. You know it and I know it — Exxon certainly fits the bill! Somehow, AGU hasn't gotten the message.

Exxon is a longtime funder of climate change denial groups and has used its influence to attack climate science and scientists. Now the company is under investigation from attorneys general in several states, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is opening up their own federal investigation. The AGU should be standing up for climate science, not Exxon.

The AGU board has made the wrong decision on Exxon funding twice this year, and now we are even more committed to keep the pressure on. We will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Earth scientists in holding the AGU accountable to its own policies and core values.

I am beyond disappointed that the AGU will continue to accept sponsorship from Exxon which has encouraged, even funded scientific fraud in the past on one of the 21st century's most important topics a...nd one that is relevant to AGU: climate change.
Best case scenario: Exxon money funds additional research and there is no influence whatsoever*.
But what good is additional research if it cannot be trusted? It has no value to either science or the public discourse.
Even worse, non-Exxon-funded research is tainted as well.

Regards,
Patrick (statistician)

* Cognitive dissonance sure makes it hard to take someone's money and then publish bad things about them/their peer group (in this case: industry), but I'm willing to take accept that AGU takes every step to ensure quality.

It's upsetting that this organization would accept Exxon's money. I find it disheartening that, although I am just a clinical research technician, I still see the lack of ethics the AGU clearly has.
...
The worst part is, y'all will probably simply wait for the outrage to die down, and continue to take money from what is clearly one of the top funders of anti-global warning propaganda.

The American Geophysics Union has clearly decided to disregard its own internal policy at the cost of its integrity. You're woefully naive to think that a dialogue with the fossil fuel industry will r...esult in action on climate change. We have seen time and time again that Exxon has known the facts on climate and yet decided to act in it's own short term financial interests --- putting humanity at risk. Simply put, the AGU's actions will be shown to be on the wrong side of history. הצג עוד

I can attempt to leave a reasonably disappointed review of AGU, but let's just go with honesty. Your board's recent decision to accept ExxonMobil's money is a betrayal to our species and planet. There... is no excuse that you can give that would justify such a decision. Your credibility is now tainted. Congratulations.

If you take money from Exxon you will be compelled to write propaganda for Exxon and their ruthless destruction of the Public Commons (the global environment). You will no longer practice and promote ...science. You will practice "modified" science that, coincidentally, supports Exxon's goals and you will promote corporate profits over people, something Exxon has been supporting for a very long time. If you have any sense of shame and/or public responsibility, you should be ashamed and rectify your erroneous decision. הצג עוד
