Finished the holly wreath sliceform torus!

I added sparkles to the leaf edges (hard to see) and red berries.

Cut 8 each of the two pieces. The pieces are sized to fit on 8.5" x 11" paper. (I used 4 different colors.)

This is a large wreath. You can cut it smaller, but remember if you re-size a sliceform template drastically you must correct the slot width to accommodate the card stock you are using.

Assembly instructions are the same as the leaf torus and daisy torus.




I cut paper braces approximately 1" x 1/4" to support the berries. Pull the smallest holly leaves toward each other until the points touch and glue the brace to the back of the leaves.

I glued all 16 pairs of the smallest leaves--front and back of the wreath--because I plan to hang the wreath in a place where both sides are visible. If you're putting it on a wall you don't need to do both sides.

This wreath is about 12" across. I used sixteen sheets of card stock.

Daisy Sliceform Torus

How to make sliceforms (torus).

This daisy torus, like the leaf edge torus previously published, purposely does not collapse flat.

I was inspired by Yoshinobu Miyamoto, and Elaine Wolfe's scalloped edge torus.

I took Elaine Wolf's suggestion and narrowed the slots to points. This should help the pieces stick together as you assemble the torus.

Leaf Edged Sliceform Torus Tutorial

This torus, unlike many sliceforms, does not collapse flat.

The assembly process is not complicated, just frustrating. You will spend a lot of time putting pieces back when they come undone. I plan to try painter's tape to hold things together temporarily.

Take a look at this video from dutchpapergirl for the basics. (Note that her torus has more pieces than mine. Assembly is the same.)

The most important concept is: like slot to like slot. In other words, when putting two pieces together, you are always matching the slots in the same position on the two pieces to each other. Be sure you are not matching a slot on one piece to the mirror image slot on the other piece.

The video doesn't show one crucial assembly step which may cause difficulty: joining the last few pieces and closing the circle.

For me, this happens when adding the last piece of one color, with a couple pieces of the other color not yet added. As you start matching the slots on that last piece, you will find that the torus wants to curl in to make a circle. Encourage it to curl in as you slide the slots together. Now look carefully to see where the remaining pieces of the other color need to go. It will be obvious very quickly if you try to put them wrong.

Finally, go around the piece, pulling the slots firmly together and checking for mismatches.

Leaf Edge Torus

This sliceform torus is challenging to assemble. Seems like every time you get one piece in, another piece falls off!

This design is a modification of a smooth torus sliceform designed by Yoshinobu Miyamoto . Thanks go to Elaine Wolfe for the idea of adding a shape to the outer edges of the pieces.

Shamrock Wreath

This St. Patrick's day wreath is an interlocked paper chain of shamrock shapes.

Construction is similar to my pumpkin wreath from a previous post.

I made my wreath with twelve shamrocks. It would work with a few more shamrocks if you want the wreath to be bigger. (Finished size with 12 shamrocks is 14" in diameter.)

Begin looping the shamrocks together as in the pumpkin wreath.

Be sure to cut the slit in one layer of the first shamrock and start your chain by looping the second shamrock through only the unslit layer of the first shamrock.



Continue looping the shamrocks together, as shown in this post by World Preschool Mom.




Finish by sliding the cut edges of the first shamrock under the hinges of the second shamrock and adhering, forming a wreath. (This is shown in the pumpkin wreath instructions.)

Pumpkin Wreath

How to make an interlocking paper chain formed into a wreath

Download and cut 12 pumpkins.

PDF or DXF or SVG

Fold each one in half.

Open out the 1st pumpkin and cut a slit across the outside of the linking opening.

Most of the pumpkins will link together as with the leaf garland.

For a wreath, however, you need to start off a little differently.

The 2nd pumpkin links through only the uncut layer of the 1st pumpkin.

Continue the chain by linking the remaining pumpkins through both layers of the preceding pumpkin.

When you have linked all 12 pumpkins into a chain, slide the slit layer of the 1st pumpkin through both layers of the 12th pumpkin.

Fold closed.

Open the slit on the 1st pumpkin and slide the cut ends under the top layer of the 2nd pumpkin. Use a tiny piece of tape to hold the slit closed.

Sliceform Christmas

Paper Forest featured this sorta-sliceform wreath, which led me to check out the Cardboard Safari site. I'm not so into the whole trophy head thing, but they are great examples of sliceforms. There's a good skull for Halloween (a little late, get it now for next year?). A couple Christmas trees. I can't really figure out how the wreath pieces attach, or, rather, what they attach to.
