- This project serves as an extension of a sport centre in Genk, Belgium, originally designed by Russian architect Isia Isgour in the 1970's, and includes the creation of a multi-sport hall, a dance studio, a gym, storage and locker rooms, as well as a restaurant and club-house. The central idea is to concentrate the different functions in a low building, extending the horizontal platform of the existing building. Small and closed spaces are situated in a linear entity rising three storeys. This entity works as a bridge linking the front entrance to the rear entrance, which is meant for technical access and deliveries.
The main multi-sports hall takes a central position. It is surrounded by balconies that turn the hall into an arena that can be viewed from everywhere in the new complex. The exterior façade is made of white textured concrete. Their slight slope gives the building the appearance of a hardened sheet, opened on each corner. These openings are used as fire exits and bring about a sense of lightness to the overall volume, which appears to float slightly above the ground. A double ramp system allows visitors to either access the entrance area overlooking the main hall, or to directly enter the sporting areas. - Ce projet de centre sportif s’inscrit dans un projet d’extension d’un centre conçu par l’architecte russe Isia Isgour dans les années 1970. Il se compose d’une nouvelle salle omnisport, d’une salle de danse et d’une salle de gymnastique. Le projet comprend également la réhabilitation d’une salle omnisport existante, la création de locaux de stockage, de vestiaire, d’espaces logistique et d’un restaurant. Le parti consiste à concentrer ces différentes fonctions dans un bâtiment bas, prolongeant le socle du complexe existant. L’ensemble des locaux fermés, vestiaires, rangements et restaurant, sont rassemblés dans une entité de trois niveaux, fonctionnant comme un pont, accessible depuis la face avant et publique du complexe et sa face arrière correspondant aux accès techniques. La grande salle omnisport bénéficie d’une position centrale, flanquée d’une circulation périphérique, qui lui donne une configuration d’arène. La façade extérieure est traitée en grands pans de béton banché blanc et nervuré. Leur léger fruit et les angles évidés du bâtiment, réservés aux sorties de secours, donne à l’ensemble l’allure d’une nappe figée, en légère suspension au dessus du sol. L’accès public se distingue de l’extérieur grâce à la présence de rampes, menant aux rez-de-chaussées haut et bas du nouveau bâtiment.
