During your beach visit, when you find an amenity do the following

1. Take a couple of pictures of the amenity

2. Copy your exact location in a coordinates format using the built-in maps app

Planning a beach trip this summer? Stay cautious about rip tides and their dangers to ensure a safe and sunny experience. Rip tides are strong and narrow currents of fast-moving water, often mistaken for “rip currents”. Nonetheless, both post great danger to swimmers. Rip tides can be prevalent at any beach with powerful tides making it important for all beachgoers to understand how they form, how to recognize them and how to stay safe.

How Do Rip Tides Form?

While rip tides and rip currents are both naturally occurring, rip tides form with an outgoing tide! Sandbanks are formed when waves break onto the beach and pull sand out to sea, this opening triggers the creation of rip tides. The outgoing tide pulls currents of water from an inlet causing rip tides to form. As waves break over sandbanks, riptides will head out to sea and bring any swimmers with them. The height of a tide also contributes to the formation of riptides and it is essential to research the tide times before planning a beach day.

The Dangers of Rip Tides

Due to a rip tides’ strength and speed, they are deemed more hazardous and dangerous than rip currents. They have the ability to carry large amounts of sand that form sand bars out in the sea. If a swimmer were to be caught in a rip tide, panic and exhaustion would emerge as individuals try to swim against the current. This struggle increases the risk of drowning thus understanding these dangers are essential when staying safe at the beach.

How to Identify a Rip Tide

Recognizing a rip tide is the first step in staying safe at the beach and helps you avoid getting caught in one. Similar to rip currents, be aware of the listed signs;

• A water current of choppy water. Water may appear different in texture or color from the surrounding ocean water

• An outgoing tide. Formed through tidal movements, water moving in or out an inlet creates the powerful rip tide current.

• A break in the ocean’s wave pattern. Rip tides have the ability to disrupt the flow of waves breaking onto the beach shore.

How to Stay Safe as a Swimmer or Beachgoer

1. Avoid Swimming at Inlets. As rip tides are prevalent within inlets at barrier beaches, it is advised for swimmers or beachgoers to avoid these areas.

2. Stay Cautious of Warning Signs. Beaches posted with signs and flags will indicate any alarming water conditions and prevent swimmers from heading in.

When you head to the beach for a day of sun and surf, the last thing on your mind might be the hidden dangers lurking in the water. Rip currents, however, are one of the most common and potentially dangerous natural phenomena beachgoers may encounter. Understanding what rip currents are and how to identify them can save your life and ensure your beach day remains fun and safe.

What are Rip Currents?

Rip currents are powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water that flow from the shore back out to sea. They can form at any beach with breaking waves and are especially prevalent near structures like jetties and piers. These currents are typically strongest near the surface and can extend hundreds of feet offshore. Rip currents can also occur on sunny days when the water seems clear, not just stormy days. 

Signs to Look For!

1. Difference in Water Color: Rip currents often appear darker or murkier than the surrounding water due to the sand and debris they carry.

2. Foam or Debris Moving Seaward: Watch for areas where foam or floating debris is moving steadily away from the shore.

3. Breaking Wave Patterns: Areas where waves aren't breaking as consistently, or where there's a noticeable gap between breaking waves, can indicate the presence of a rip current.

4. Choppy Water: Rip currents can cause a section of water to appear rougher or choppier than its surroundings, even on relatively calm days.

Types of Rip Currents:

1. Boundary Rip Currents: These are stable and persistent rip currents that maintain a relatively constant position. They often form around permanent structures like jetties or groins.

2. Flash Rip Currents: Also known as transient rip currents, these are brief and temporary currents that can appear suddenly and change location rapidly. They are less predictable than fixed rip currents. They appear as turbulent streaks of water and sand. 

3. Channelized Rip Currents: These are narrow rip currents that form in the gaps between sandbars. They can be particularly dangerous because they can swiftly carry swimmers from shallow to deeper water. A way to identify this is by the classic dark gap.

4. Complex Rip Currents: These are rip currents that exhibit more than one flow path or circulation pattern. They can be challenging to identify and navigate.

Safety Tips

• Know Before You Go: Check local beach advisories and talk to lifeguards about current conditions.

• Swim Near Lifeguards: Always swim at beaches with lifeguards present and heed their advice.

• Stay Calm and Float: If caught in a rip current, stay calm and don’t fight the current. Float on your back and calmly swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current, then swim back to shore.

• Signal for Help: If you're unable to swim out of the current, wave and shout for help.

Rip currents are a natural part of the beach environment, but with awareness and preparation, you can enjoy the beach safely. Stay safe beachgoers and have fun exploring the beauty of our ocean shores!

Starting today on iOS devices, users will notice the “Water Quality” parameter on their “Now” tab. The two values, Good or Poor, are based on the raw water quality information from the California government and the California Code of Regulations, Title 17, § 7958:

• Single sample 

  • 1,000 total coliform bacteria per 100 mL, if the ratio of fecal/total coliform bacteria exceeds 0.1; or 

  • 10,000 total coliform bacteria per 100 mL; or 

  • 400 fecal coliform bacteria per 100 mL; or 

  • 104 enterococcus bacteria per 100 mL

• Mean of the logarithms (i.e., geometric mean) of the results of at least five weekly samples during any 30-day sampling period 

  • 1,000 total coliform bacteria per 100 mL; or 

  • 200 fecal coliform bacteria per 100 mL; or 

  • 35 enterococcus bacteria per 100 mL

The Study: Methodology 

Researchers examined the effects of viewing water versus adjacent ground at six different sites along a creek in a university arboretum. The study involved 73 participants who alternated their gaze between the water and the ground for specified periods. The physiological effects, including heart rate and blood pressure, along with subjective ratings of relaxation, were carefully recorded.

Key Findings:

1. Reduced Heart Rate and Blood Pressure: When watching water as opposed to the land, participants' heart rates and blood pressure significantly decreased at all sites. This physiological reaction suggests that fixating on water has a slight relaxing effect.

1. Subjective Relaxation Ratings: Looking at water consistently made participants feel more relaxed. When comparing smaller sections of the creek to areas with broad views of the water, like lakes, this effect was more noticeable.

Conclusion: 

This study emphasizes the significant influence that natural bodies of water can have on our mental and physical health. By spending a few moments a day looking at water, we can tap into a natural, accessible way to reduce stress and boost relaxation, underscoring our deep-rooted connection with the natural world.

Three months later, I broke my clavicle bone at the gym (don’t train a sore muscle…) and was forced to take a break from surfing. I never broke a bone before, so it was the first time that I’ve had to prevent myself from doing any sports-related activities.

But after a speedy recovery and a couple of weeks back at the gym, I felt like I was ready to go back. And I did – by signing up for a surfing course with an instructor who gave me tons of confidence in my abilities.

Here are some tips and tricks for beginners that really helped me to catch ten waves during today’s lesson:

• 5 minutes of warm-ups – legs, shoulders, hands, head

• 10 sets of paddling exercises + pop-ups on the sand

• When popping up, try to get into a karate stance as soon as you jump to maintain balance

• Once you enter the water, every time you catch a wave, remember to get into the karate stance to maintain balance all the way to the shore

I’ll keep writing more posts in this series for beginners like me who want to advance in surfing!

Four years ago, a friend invited me to surf. The only thing I recall is how hard it was for me to lift my body from the surfboard to catch a wave. I watched the other people surf and wondered to myself – they make it look so easy, why can't I do it too?

That was a transformative moment for me. I realized how weak my body was, to the extent that I couldn't enjoy a sport that looked incredibly fun. So, I signed up for the gym and, starting in December 2023, with the help of ChatGPT, I began to take the gym seriously and succeeded in gaining muscle.

Recently, I decided it was time to try surfing again – this time not only for fun but also to learn more about why our customers use the forecast multiple times a day and what impact each value has on the surfing experience.

Where do I start?

A surf course? A 1:1 lesson? Should I bring all the equipment with me beforehand?

I started with a post in a couple of Facebook groups in my area, asking which surf clubs are most recommended for beginners. Most surf clubs offer equipment, such as a surfboard and a surfing wetsuit, for those who want to explore the sport before committing to it financially.

I called a couple of surf clubs and inquired about surf courses. Most of them offer courses that start on specific dates throughout the year, meaning you need to sign up in advance. Some offer a group that you can join, with an instructor's assistance.

I decided to move forward with a 1:1 lesson to make the most out of my first professional experience.

Tips I was given about what to do/not to do before a surfing session:

• Don't eat or drink too much before the session.

• Apply tons of sunscreen on exposed skin areas.

• Check the water quality index, especially after rain, as the water might be polluted.

• Ask the surf club about the ideal day to surf. Some days might be perfect, while others might not.

Let's Do It!

My first session was scheduled for Friday, December 29, at 11 am. The surf club called me a couple of hours before the session to let me know that the waves were flat and it wouldn't be ideal to surf, so we postponed it.

I packed extra clothes, a towel, a water bottle. Soap & shampoo are optional if you want to shower at the club. The instructor picked out a wetsuit and a surfing board for me, and we started with practicing the basic moves on the beach. After some practice, we entered the water and practiced the same thing. The key is to lock your eyes on a distant object on the horizon. Wherever you look – that's where your body will take you (a great lesson for life).

For the first lesson, the instructor pushed my surfboard once there was a wave, making it much easier to ride one. He said there's no such thing as failing – it's progress. And once I successfully rode a wave, it was one of the most exciting moments of my life.

No words can describe the moment you stand up on the surfboard and let the wave carry you. It feels like magic.

What I've Learned So Far

• Don't hold the surfboard vertically in the water. My fingers were bent at a 90-degree angle when a wave hit the surfboard. I can really feel this now as I'm typing on the keyboard.

• Take some space to stay away from other surfers. One of them surfed straight into my foot. I noticed it's pretty common, though, and every time it happens, the one who hit asks the other person if they're okay.

• Winter is usually better for surfing.

• Start paddling five seconds before a wave approaches you.

• Pop up (also called taking off) on your surfboard once you feel the wave is pushing you; it takes a couple of seconds.

• Choosing a wetsuit involves multiple factors that must be considered thoughtfully: the size, type, where the zipper is located (most people told me that the chest is the best), and the thickness (less thickness provides better flexibility, while more provides better warmth). I'm still looking for my wetsuit and will write a dedicated post about it.

• Using a plastic bag on your feet helps to get into the wetsuit faster and easier.

• Surfers typically check the forecast a couple of times per day. Conditions can change drastically overnight, so it's important to stay updated. (Check out the forecast on our app!)

• The leash helps to keep the surfboard nearby in the water. Attach it to your leg (left or right, whichever works for you), and make sure the cable points to the back or to the left if the leash is on your left leg, and to the right if it's on your right.

• Once you leave the water, rest the surfboard on your stomach and tie it around the blades.

In conclusion, it was fascinating to understand the impact of the information we offer on our app on the surfing experience and the importance of each value.
