find science to solutions

Our research, studies and publications drive action on plastic pollution: TrawlShare empowers citizen scientists to collect data, the Plastics BAN List details functional and material alternatives that could replace single-use disposable products, and regional analysis provides essential baseline data needed to evaluate the effectiveness of pollution prevention policies.

Are "compostable" and “biodegradable” plant-based plastics the next generation of greenwashing? Created in collaboration with a coalition of partners including Clean Production Action, PPC, Surfrider and UPSTREAM, our new Plastics BAN (Better Alternatives Now) List examines the true life cycle of plastic products in the United States.

Watch Rachel's Ted talk

How do we combat a broken recycling system and a global plastic habit? 5 Gyres Executive Director Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff recently gave a TEDx talk on what consumers, corporations and legislators can do to fix the problem. In a nutshell: "Single-use plastics are simply habits. And habits can be changed.” Let’s do this!

Take a trip with mi mar

Mar/My Sea piloted last year with the goal of engaging diverse groups of underserved high school students in one-day research expeditions. Beginning this month, 400 students from Sunburst Youth Academy will experience the program, learning about plastic pollution through hands-on citizen science aboard a boat off the coast of Los Angeles, generously donated by cause partner Newport Whales.

RELENTLESSLY PURSUING SCIENCE TO SOLUTIONS FOR A PLANET FREE OF PLASTIC POLLUTION

The 5 Gyres Institute was first to research plastic pollution in all five main subtropical gyres. Our study identifying plastic microbeads led to the United States federal ban.
