What on earth is going on? It’s a common question, and the truth is that often, no one knows.
</p><p>As a species, I believe we can do better at collecting, reporting and learning from our collective human actions.
</p><p>Standardised Data on Initiatives (STARDIT) is an attempt to build a way of answering this question, with anyone on Earth able to access, contribute, edit or verify information about collective human action (known as ‘initiatives’). The basic idea is that there should be a standard way to describe human actions, and any consequences, in a way that works across languages and cultures.
</p><p>Think of STARDIT as a way of creating a Wikipedia page about something that wouldn’t normally have an entry. This could be anything from a clinical trial, a car or a community arts project.
</p><p>STARDIT provides a way for anyone to collaborate on describing collective action. Crucially, it can be used across different areas of human knowledge, from health research, environmental research and education, to government policies, manufacturing or the arts.
</p><p><i>“All major problems, including complex global problems such as air pollution and pandemics, require reliable data sharing between disciplines in order to respond effectively. Such problems require evidence-informed collaborative methods, multidisciplinary research and interventions in which the people who are affected are involved in every stage”</i>

</p><p>For example, educating women and girls has been highlighted as one of the most effective ways of preventing irreversible climate change. In environmental research, by using STARDIT to report data, this can then be used to help us understand what the most effective methods are for pausing mass extinction, preventing irreversible climate change or preventing sea levels rising any higher than they already will. The solutions will involve research, government policy, education interventions, manufacturing and the arts. People working in each one of these disciplines need to be able to communicate with each other, understand who did what, and any reported impacts or outcomes.

<p>We know that there are vested interests with a lot of power working against everything that the data and evidence tells us we should be doing, if we want to prevent these things. It's easy to attack or blame individuals or even organizations and countries. Divide and conquer is an old tactic for a reason.
</p><p>But what if humanity could unite around shared values which are codified in multiple languages? What if we had evidence-informed methods of achieving sustainable development goals which everyone can understand and act on, regardless of location, income or spoken language.
</p><p>In a world where machine generated content is getting more sophisticated, and harder for the average person to identify, it is essential that we humans have tools to be able to collectively share information about who (or what) was involved in the creation of information such as media (videos), algorithms, molecules (such as drugs) and larger objects (like cars).
</p><p>We can only do this by working together. We can only work together by understanding what on earth is going on, and what, collectively, we think we should do.
</p><p>There will be no right or wrong answers, but with STARDIT, the intension is at least there will be data. This data can help us make more wise decisions, and be used by the self-correcting lens of the scientific method to save us from the greatest threat facing humanity and life on earth, ourselves.

I believe we can never be too informed about the environment we live in and this lack of information is causing disconnection with our reality. That’s why I have a keen interest in developing environmental awareness through online platforms and decided to contact Wikimedia Australia and pitched the idea of doing a residency at <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://www.epa.vic.gov.au">Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria</a>.
</p><p>In preparing this project I came up with several goals:

<ul><li>I wanted to learn more about the environmental challenges in Victoria,</li>
<li>understand how the EPA works to monitor and promote environmental quality,</li>
<li>and more importantly, I wanted to contribute to sharing awareness about environmental protection.</li></ul>
<p>I thought having more Australian knowledge about the environment put on Wikipedia would be beneficial and different from the previous GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) residencies that took place in Australia. It was a great opportunity to reach different professionals and potentially inspire new volunteer editors to join the Wiki adventure in the future. As a woman and a legal professional from France, I also thought that my perspective might bring a different
approach to the platform.
</p><p>Belinda from Wikimedia Australia and myself got in touch with Cathy Heycock, Director of Public Affairs at EPA, who was really enthusiastic about the project. We all agreed on the necessity of conveying scientific information simply as there is a real need to reach more people.
</p><p>Science is like law, it is useful to those who understand it. And I am thrilled to be working on this issue.
</p><p>On my first day, I was given a quick tour of the headquarters situated in Carlton and started working from a EPA Wikipedia page to expand towards other pages related to the environment.
</p><p>I quickly realised that so much more information was needed on so many pages.
</p><p>By adding pictures, new information and references, the page started growing and I added more and more other ideas to create and add to other pages.
</p><p>EPA Staff have been very kind and made themselves available to help me get in touch with some of their colleagues to get further information to document my research.
</p><p>I can’t wait to see how much I will have added by the end of the project!

<p>This project will establish <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User%3AMaryCoe">Mary Coe</a> as the first Wikimedian in Residence at the <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://www.anzsi.org/">Australian and New Zealand Society of Indexers (ANZSI</a>). Support for the project will be provided by the <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://arts-ed.csu.edu.au/schools/information-communication-studies">School of Information and Communication Studies at Charles Sturt University</a> (CSU SICS).
</p><p>Mary will focus on identifying and filling gaps in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_and_information_science" class="extiw" title="w:Library and information science">library and information science</a> (LIS)-related content (including <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Index_(publishing)" class="extiw" title="w:Index (publishing)">book indexing</a>) on Wikipedia, Wikidata and other Wikimedia platforms. Her background as an information professional and connections with both organisations will enable her to tap into the resources needed for this work. She is a book indexer, metadata specialist, Editor of the journal The Indexer: The International Journal of Indexing and an Adjunct Lecturer at CSU SICS.
</p><p>Capacity building is a major goal of this project, and the role of the WiR will be primarily to provide opportunities for ANZSI members (professional indexers) and CSU SICS (information studies/librarianship) students to develop their skills and confidence in Wiki editing.
</p><p>Mary will provide training on the Wikipedia and Wikidata platforms and run editathons with them. It will gather the rich social and natural histories of <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://www.fncv.org.au">Victoria’s regional Field Naturalists Clubs</a> and make them freely accessible and discoverable on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons and linking the above elements to each other and to the websites and publications of each organisation. This will build on existing work taking place thanks to a grant from the <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://prov.vic.gov.au/community/grants-and-awards/local-history-grants-program">Public Record Office of Victoria Local History Grant</a> to the Biodiversity Heritage Library to digitise the publications of Victoria’s Field Naturalists’ Clubs. The funding from Wikimedia Australia will expand this project to include the gathering of photographs and stories, and the creation of the connected hub of knowledge.

<p>It is one of his most famous images and it is a stunning image of a solitary river red gum tree, near Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia. The title he gave to the photograph was "The Spirit of Endurance", for the qualities he felt were epitomised the tree's survival in a harsh environment.
</p><p>The tree still stands and is a notable landmark within the Flinders Ranges National Park, it appears on the National Trust of South Australia's Register of Significant Trees.

<p>Internationally, this year features an addition to the public domain of the history of animated film: <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://diff.wikimedia.org/2024/01/01/welcome-to-the-public-domain-mickey-mouse/">Steamboat Willie</a>, the first published animated short featuring the character of Mickey Mouse.
</p><p>Whilst closer to home, The National Library of Australia also has a <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://www.nla.gov.au/stories/news/2024/public-domain-2024">blog post</a> of notable Australian works to enter the public domain in 2024. The National Library collection items in the public domain this year include unpublished works by authors who died in 1953, orphan works (i.e. works with no known author) created in 1953, and government publications created in 1973.

</p><p>Wikimedia Australia achieved many new and exciting things in 2023, including participating in Wikimania and Wikidata international conferences, a new round of partner projects and our first face to face Australian community conference, since 2019! </p><p><b>2024 Partner Projects Announced</b>
</p><p>Wikimedia Australia is delighted to announce the successful allocation of grant funding for partner projects in 2024. This round of funding will support the placement of four Wikimedians in Residence at diverse organisations including:

<ul><li>Mary Coe and the <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://www.anzsi.org">Australia New Zealand Society of Indexers</a> / Charles Sturt University</li>
<li>Olivia Fougerais and the <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://www.epa.vic.gov.au">Environmental Protection Authority</a> in Victoria</li>
<li>Caddie Brain at the <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://www.ecnt.org.au">Environment Centre NT</a> (with a First Nations focus)</li></ul>
<p>The final resident will be announced in the near future. These residents will actively share and cultivate skills within Wikipedia and other Wiki platforms, contributing to community growth, enriching our collective knowledge and bridging knowledge gaps. </p><p><b>Dates confirmed for Wikimania 2024</b>
</p><p>The <a href="https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2024:Organisers" class="extiw" title="wikimania:2024:Organisers">Wikimania Core Organizing Team</a> for 2024 has announced that Wikimania will be held from August 7th to 10th, 2024, at the <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://www.mckkatowice.pl/pl/">International Congress Centre (ICC)</a> in <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katowice?wprov=wppw2">Katowice, Poland</a> (with August 6th reserved for a pre-conference day). <i>Please note the change of host city</i>. Session submissions for the program are expected to open in February, and additional information about the program will follow soon.
</p><p><b>2024 Wikimedia Hackathon Events and Scholarships</b>
</p><p>The <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://pretix.eu/wikimedia/wmhackathon2024/">Wikimedia Hackathon</a> is taking place in person in Tallinn, Estonia, from May 3rd to May 5th, 2024.
</p><p>To secure your spot, complete the registration and scholarship form. Scholarships from the Wikimedia Foundation that cover travel and accommodation expenses are also available for a selected group of technical contributors. The deadline for <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://pretix.eu/wikimedia/wmhackathon2024/">scholarship applications</a> is January 5th, 2024.

This year has been a chance to get back out into the world. The <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ESEAP_Hub">East and South East Asia Hub</a> is in development and we have participated in Wikimania in Singapore, Wikidata in Taiwan and now preparing for <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ESEAP_Conference_2024">ESEAP in Malaysia, May 2024</a>. Look out for scholarship announcements coming soon.
</p><p>Wikimania Australia also held the first community conference in Australia since 2019 - <a href="/wiki/WikiCon_Brisbane_2023" class="mw-redirect" title="WikiCon Brisbane 2023">Wikicon Brisbane</a> - and we are looking forward to doing this bigger and better in 2024.
</p><p>We also launched a new <a href="/wiki/Partnerships" title="Partnerships">Partnerships program</a> and ran <a href="/wiki/Past_events#2023" title="Past events">loads of events and training sessions</a> for the local community. As well as many other activities.
</p><p>Behind all this activity is our our wonderful staff. A big thank you to <a href="/wiki/User:JamesGaunt" title="User:JamesGaunt">James Gaunt</a> who left us in the middle of the year for setting up many projects and systems. And a big welcome to Alice Woods and <a href="/wiki/User:Ali_Smith" title="User:Ali Smith">Alison Smith</a> who joined us for the second half of the year and have hit the ground running. All this is overseen by the indefatigable <a href="/wiki/User:BindiS" title="User:BindiS">Belinda Spry</a>, Executive Director, who has been enthusiastically building up our partnerships and engagement strategy, nationally, regionally and around the world.
</p><p>I would also like to thank the <a href="/wiki/Governance" title="Governance">Wikimedia Australia Board</a>, past and present, for contributing their time and expertise to ensuring we operate with good governance and a thriving chapter. It has been a pleasure working with you all. <p>The 5th of December is International Volunteers Day and Wikimedia Australia would like to acknowledge the hard work of <a href="/wiki/User:Kerry_Raymond" title="User:Kerry Raymond">Kerry Raymond</a>. Kerry is a passionate Wikipedian and has spent many years contributing to Wiki platforms. Her generosity in sharing her knowledge, skills and time is immeasurable.
</p><p>Her unwavering commitment, passion, and dedication to Wikipedia, and particularly content about Queensland, has played a pivotal role in fostering the growth and success of our community and organisation. Her contributions, whether through content creation, her technical expertise, outreach, or leadership initiatives, have left an indelible mark on Wikipedia and have significantly enriched the collective knowledge of users worldwide.
</p><p>Over the years Kerry has also partnered with the Australian National University, National Library of Australia, National Gallery of Australia, State Library of Queensland, University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology to help them achieve remarkable outcomes.
</p><p>Kerry has added an astounding amount of content about Queensland places, with a focus on history and geography, and has made over 250,000 edits and created 1000s of new pages to Wikipedia; she has also added over 100,000 images to Wikimedia Commons and helped geolocate many more. Kerry is not done writing about Queensland yet!
</p><p>She contributes and stays on Wikipedia because she believes in its vision statement, a quote from its creator Jimmy Wales, that: <i>"Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we're doing"</i>.
