February Feathers and Fur

Did you know finches are member of the family Fringillidae? I did not know that but I just came across the word and I liked it.

Here's a dog named Fluff who is a pomeranian mix. We saw him at the house where we used to live in Basye. He's about to leave though, for his family is moving away and new tenants are scheduled to move in next week.

Flash continues to do okay. He does not mind taking additional medications because I wrap them in soft treats. His appetite for kibble is less now, and he is drinking extra water.  He needs to go outside frequently though, or he'll leave a wet spot on the carpet. I remember going through this with Benny when he was dealing with congestive heart failure.

Let's end with a bright red cardinal.

Hawksbill Creek Random-osity

The Good: The town of Luray has preserved Hawksbill Creek as an asset rather than piping it underground. A walking trail and several parks make it a recreation spot as well as a place of beauty.

The Random: Mallard ducks enjoy the creek.

(The ducks give me an excuse to share this post with Wild Bird Wednesday as well as Wednesday Waters. I'm also linking to Cathy's blog hop, Jesh's Seasons,  as well as The Good, The Random, and the Fun.)

The Fun: Our weather has been unusually warm for February and this brought hundreds of people outside to enjoy parks like this on Presidents Day. Here we see families having a pleasant time on the Hawksbill Greenway.

Profiles of Critters

Thank you, friends who expressed concern for Flash and sent wishes for me to feel better. I do; sometimes a night of sleeping works wonders!

Flash seemed to feel okay today except there was a time this evening when he coughed for a little while. I have a complicated schedule that the vet gave me for his new medications and I had to adjust it a little because it's impractical to give him one pill at 1:00 AM and then start the next day's meds at 5 AM.

Some of the Usual Suspects

These are some of the critters we see just about every day: Cardinal, squirrel, wren, goose, sparrow...

... and Flash!

It's February and the Critters are Busy

Birds are enjoying my feeders and other animals are still doing their own things.

When I saw these red creatures on a sign, I wondered what they were supposed to be! I took a cell phone picture and later I finally realized what represent: lovebirds! (Never mind that they are look like red pickles!)

Next we have a real bird down by the pond. I believe this is a muscovy duck, although it could be a hybrid.

Flash, as usual, observes all, at least when he isn't sleeping.

Finally, another large bird beside the pond. I had seem the great blue heron earlier, flying quickly out of sight. I was excited when he came back to our yard and I got this picture using a zoom lens.

Loving Life: Geese by the Lake

The February theme at City Daily Photo is Loving Life. I decided to use our local geese as models because they seem to really enjoy themselves. We have various colors of geese in shades of gray and white, including Canada Geese, the expert fliers in the crowd.

Our subdivision has a lake at the entrance. and I can see the lake from our house so I get plenty of goose photos.

I was fortunate to see a flock of Canada Geese in flight as I drove home yesterday. I only had my point-and-shoot camera with me but that may have been an advantage because it focuses more quickly than my Nikon with the zoom lens. I cropped these final two pictures so you could get a closer look at the geese with their landing gear extended.

Late January Random-osity

The Good: Farms like this remind me that the Shenandoah is still a fertile valley producing healthful food for people and animals.

The Random: Here are some winter scenes from our area. We had an inch or so of snow last night, but most of it melted during the day.

The Fun: Seeing trains is fun! I like the whistles and the rumbling sound. This one received some unofficial decoration.

My Yard is Full of Critters

We are fortunate that we have a yard that attracts birds including geese and ducks. Squirrels come to feast on bird seed, and once in a while a cat comes through.

The yellow cat appeared to be waiting for birds to show up. I went outside and she ran away.

I love the pretty cardinals and photograph them often. The male is bright red and the female is colored more subtly, probably to avoid attracting predators when nesting. I often think of my mom when I see these fine birds, for she liked watching them and she sometimes wore a red sweater!

Many years ago I read a book called The Cardinal but it had nothing to do with birds. It was about a Catholic priest who rose up through the ranks. I was young when I read it; I remember being appalled when he let his sister die during a difficult childbirth rather than have the baby's life sacrificed. It was a horrible choice to have to make, but it left her husband without a wife and her child without a mother. Other than that horrific incident, I enjoyed the book.
