TRANSCRIPT:

Iranian Ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Ali Bahreini: The Islamic Republic of Iran has clearly demonstrated its commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights. We respect human rights based on what we have learned from our religion, history, and culture.

UN Watch Joint Statement: Mr. President, as we gather here in Geneva to address human rights, a courtroom in New York is revealing the true face of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which extends its brutality across the globe.

This week, the world is hearing evidence of Tehran’s attempt to assassinate Masih Alinejad, a courageous journalist and women’s rights activist, on U.S. soil.

Her crime? Speaking out against the oppression of women in Iran.

The trial has exposed how Iranian officials hired criminals to stalk her home, track her every move, and prepare to gun her down, at her home in New York. There are many more such cases of Iran’s state-sponsored terrorism. Yet, here at the UN, Iran pretends to champion human rights, while they silence, imprison, and kill those who dare to speak freely.

Just days ago, they tried to silence a Swedish MP Alireza Akhondi right here in this chamber. They failed. And they’ve failed to silence Masih Alinejad. They’ve failed to silence the brave women of Iran who remove their hijabs in defiance.

The Ayatollahs fear the truth. That is why they resort to censorship, abduction, and murder.

We ask the United Nations: Will you stand by these courageous women’s rights activists, or will you allow the sponsors of state terrorism to continue targeting them with impunity?”

UN Watch brought Ukrainian MP Lisa Yasko to the floor of the U.N. Human Rights Council to call out North Korean human rights violations being committed related to Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine.

Full Transcript:

My name is Lisa Yasko a member of the Parliament of Ukraine and I ask you to condemn as much as you can North Korean human rights violations that they are committing in cooperation with Russian aggression against Ukraine.

When, in 2024, they openly joined Russian forces to commit crimes against humanity on Ukrainian land and in the war against Ukraine we were sure that the world reactions would be very strong but in fact, it was not.

Because there is no proper reaction North Korea is continuing to help Russia immensely. Do you know that most of the ammunition that Russia is actually receiving it is receiving from North Korea? Do you know that the ballistic missiles no one is giving so many ballistic missiles to Russia as North Korea.

For North Koreans, this cooperation with Russia is actually very progressive and they really like the idea that they are gaining militaristic experience in committing more and more war crimes and they are gaining technologies that will allow them to have more wars to start more wars in the future.

Please raise your voice. Make a proper statement to condemn North Korea.

UN Watch director Hillel Neuer today called on UNRWA commissioner-general Philippe Lazzarini to condemn his former UNRWA staff union chief, Suhail al-Hindi, now a Hamas spokesman operating from Turkey, for calling on “every Muslim” worldwide “to rise up” and join the “resistance,” which for Hamas means violence and terrorism. The comments were made in an interview with AlAraby TV yesterday.

Though UNRWA was forced to remove al-Hindi in 2017—after the agency first lied and denied his terror ties—their former teacher and school principal is still closely involved with UNRWA, seen in June 2023 granting an Islamic award to his UNRWA staff union chief successor Amir al-Mishal.

Suhail al-Hindi Interview with AlAraby TV

March 18, 2025

Ruwaida Abou Eid, AlAraby TV: “Mr. Suhail, how will you respond now?”

Suhail al-Hindi, Hamas Politburo Member & former UNRWA School Principal & UNRWA Staff Union Chair:
“I believe the [battle]field speaks on this issue. We are not talking. What is required first in the West Bank, is for the West Bank, and Jerusalem, and the occupied interior [Israel] must rise up for Palestine, for Gaza, and for the children of Gaza. What is required is for the Arab nation to rise up, from the Persian Gulf to the Atlantic, for Gaza and for the West Bank.”

“What is required is for every Muslim to rise up for Palestine and for Gaza. What is required is for every free person to stand with this sacred cause.”

“Slogans of condemnation and slogans of denunciation are not enough. We must stand and be shoulder to shoulder with our kinfolks and our people.”

“Therefore, what is required of us all is to join the resistance in order to deter and prevent the occupation from shedding more blood against our Palestinian people and our Palestinian resistance.”

UN Watch brought Venezuelan President-elect Edmundo González to the floor of the U.N. Human Rights Council to speak on dictator Nicolás Maduro’s violent repression following his fraudulent election.

Full Transcript (English Translation):

Mr. President,

I am Edmundo González Urrutia, and I am addressing this Council today on behalf of millions of Venezuelans who have resisted the repression with dignity, who have expressed their democratic will, and who have been persecuted because of it.

The Venezuelan State seeks to present an image of cooperation, but reality contradicts its narrative. In Venezuela, the jails remain full of political prisoners and repression is the only response to those demanding fundamental rights.

For Venezuelans, it is essential that the Office of the High Commissioner maintain its presence in the country, that the International Fact-Finding Mission continues its work of documentation and denunciation, and that this Council reaffirms, as it has been doing, its commitment to defending the fundamental human rights of Venezuelans.

Today, Venezuelans are not asking for compassion. We demand justice. We demand freedom. And we count on the support of the international community to achieve this.

GENEVA, March 18, 2025 — For the second time in two days, Tehran’s representative in the UN’s top human rights body tried unsuccessfully to shut down Swedish MP Alireza Akhondi as he was exposing the Islamic regime’s brutality. Before he was interrupted, Akhondi asked, “how much more blood needs to be spilled before the world acts?”

Alireza Akhondi, a member of the Swedish parliament of Iranian heritage, testified today before the United Nations Human Rights Council, at the invitation of the independent non-governmental human rights group UN Watch, which gave him the floor as part of a joint statement.

Although countries are supposed to deliver their response statements at the conclusion of the entire debate, the Iranian delegate interrupted Akhondi in the middle of his speech by invoking a procedural point of order, without any basis accusing the lawmaker of having failed “to use the standard language of the United Nations,” and of speaking in an “uncivilized manner.” In fact, the delegates from Iran and other dictatorships routinely resort to the most inflammatory language when they attack Western countries or Israel.

Rather than reject Tehran’s baseless interruption and condemn its abuse of procedure, the chair of the UN debate, Ambassador Claudia Fuentes Julio of Chile, who serves as Vice-President of the UNHRC, made a statement that appeared to embracing the premise of the Islamic regime’s remarks, implying that Akhondi’s language was not “suited to the dignified discussion on a human rights topic,” and that it lacked “tolerance and respect.” A day prior, another Vice-President of the UNHRC, Ambassador Paul Efambe of the Democratic Republic of Congo, also permitted Tehran’s baseless interruption and embraced the premise of the Iranian delegate’s remarks.

Mr. Akhondi was not surprised by the regime’s failed attempt to shut down his speech twice. “It was exactly what we wanted the world to see. This is the Islamic Republic in a nutshell. They have taken 90 million Iranians as hostages, denying them their basic human rights. They tried to censor me because the Ayatollahs are afraid of the truth. But it’s difficult to silence a Member of Parliament with Iranian heritage, in the heart of Europe.”

TRANSCRIPT OF UN CLASH:

Swedish MP Alireza Akhondi, speaking on behalf of a UN Watch joint statement:

Vice President, how much more blood needs to be spilled before the world acts?

For 46 years, the Islamic Republic has ruled by terror and the UN Fact-Finding Mission has revealed only the tip of the iceberg.

Today, I speak for those who cannot. For the woman in Iran setting fire….

UNHRC Vice-President, Claudia Fuentes Julio:

I apologize. I need to give the floor to Iran for a point of order. Please go ahead, Iran.

Islamic Republic of Iran Representative, Mrs. Somayeh Karimdoost:

Thank you. Madam Chair.

While we believe in constructive engagement with civil society, we request you to ask the speaker to use the standard language of the United Nations, especially when using the name of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The NGOs, who have [been] granted opportunity to sit here and speak, should know the standard of speaking and speak in a civilized manner. Thank you.

UNHRC Vice-President Claudia Fuentes Julio:

Thank you.

I’d like to appeal to all those present to please abide by a language that is suited to the dignified discussion on a human rights topic, and I count on your support to ensure that our discussion continues with shows of due respect. Every person has the right to express their opinion, as long as they do so in an acceptable fashion. Tolerance and respect are key for the work of this council.

That said, I would like to give the floor back to the speaker so that they may finish their statement.

Swedish MP Alireza Akhondi, speaking on behalf of a UN Watch joint statement:

For the women in Iran who set their headscarves on fire in protest, only to be met with bullets.

For the men who demand freedom only to be silenced with torture.

For the children who realize their opinion can be a death sentence.

The name Jina Mahsa Amini still echoes in our hearts. She was one of many arrested, beaten, murdered.

This terror is not only contained within Iran’s border.

Today, as we sit here, murderers hired by the Islamic Republic stand trial in Europe and the United States for plots to assassinate Iranian activists.

To the world, I say silence is complicity.

To this council, I say words of condemnation are not enough.

Iranians need protection. They need accountability. They need justice.

If this council cannot defend the persecutors, it risks becoming a stage for the oppressors.

The Iranian people are shouting “Woman, Life, Freedom!”

Their fight is our fight. We must not fail them.

TRANSCRIPT:

Swedish MP Alireza Akhondi, speaking on behalf of a UN Watch joint statement:

Yesterday in Iran, IRGC Commander Hossein Salami defied the world, by saying, “We are a legitimate and globally recognized entity.”

Today we ask: Is the Islamic Republic a legitimate entity?

Lets consider. This Council’s investigators have documented how the Islamic Republic, imprisons, tortures, and executes its own people. Women are beaten, raped, silenced. Children and freedom seekers are imprisoned, murdered, exiled.

Mr. President, the truth is: an entity that clings to power by brutalizing its own people has no legitimacy.

So I ask the Islamic Republic representatives here: How can you claim to speak for the people of Iran?
You speak for their oppressors.

No diplomatic theater can erase the Islamic Republic’s crimes. No seat in a UN chamber will shield you from judgment of history.

I ask this Council: If you do not take action against these tyrants, what message will that send…..

UNHRC President:

There is a point of order from the delegation of Iran.

Iranian representative:

President, please remind the speaker to observe the standard language and wording of this esteemed body and not to use unacceptable terms and phrases in this esteemed body. Thank you.

UNHRC President:

I would like to call on everyone to adhere to language that is commensurate with the dignity inherent to the discussion on human rights issues. So I count on your support in ensuring that a sense of respect permeate our discussion. Everyone has the right to express his or her views, but this should remain within the accepted framework. Tolerance and respect should be the keywords of the work of the Council. With this in mind, I give the floor back to the speaker.

Alireza Akhondi:

Thank you Mr. President. This is not uncommon for the Islamic Republic.

I say to the people of Iran: Your courage shakes the foundation of the Ayatollahs. We see you. We hear you. And we will not stop until your voices rise, freely and fearlessly.

Thank you very much.

A/HRC/58/NGO/223: Report: Hamas Torture of Israelis on and after October 7th

Excerpt: On 7 October 2023, Hamas led a brutal assault on Israeli civilians in Israel, slaughtering 1200 men, women, and children, injuring over 5,000, and taking 251 people as hostages. During the course of that assault, in violation of multiple articles of the Convention, Hamas and other non-State terrorist groups in Gaza such as Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) inflicted countless instances of torture against Israeli civilians. Similarly, Hamas, PIJ, and others have repeatedly violated the Convention with regards to their torturous, cruel, and inhuman treatment of the 251 hostages abducted into Gaza on 7 October 2023.

A/HRC/58/NGO/224: Report Concerning Genocide Libel Promoted by Special Rapporteur on Food

Excerpt: United Nations Watch is alarmed by the October 2024 report to the General Assembly by UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food Michael Fakhri, titled Starvation and the right to food, with an emphasis on the Palestinian people’s food sovereignty (A/79/171). Mr. Fakhri’s report promotes the genocide libel against Israel based on the false accusation, which has been thoroughly debunked, that Israel is using “starvation as a tactic of genocide” in Gaza. In doing so, the report omits critical, countervailing facts that mandate the exact opposite conclusion, rejects Israel’s right to exist, makes unsupported claims, promotes Hamas misinformation, and contains blatant antisemitism.

“It’s surreal. Electing Saudi Arabia to head the world body for protecting women’s rights is like putting Dracula in charge of the blood bank,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, a Geneva-based independent human rights group.

“As chair, Saudi Arabia is now in a key position to influence the planning and decisions of the world’s top women’s right body. Yet despite cosmetic reforms, Saudi Arabia continues to subject women to legal discrimination, where they are effectively enslaved under a male guardianship system that was enshrined into law three years ago, ironically on international women’s day,” said Neuer.

“We call on the EU states and all other democracies who cheered yesterday’s adoption of a meaningless political declaration to end their silence and state for the record that this is absurd, morally reprehensible, and an insult to the oppressed women of Saudi Arabis. This is a dark day for women’s rights, and for all human rights,” said Neuer.

“One of the world’s most patriarchal and misogynistic regimes now chairs the Commission on the Status of Women, which is touted on the UN website as the “principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.”

This is the first time since the commission’s establishment in 1946 that Saudi Arabia was made chair.

Click for Hillel’s Neuer’s viral X.com post on the Saudi presidency

Saudi Arabia’s Abysmal Record on Women’s Rights

“Saudi Arabia’s persecution of women is gross and systematic, both in law and in practice,” said Neuer.

“Despite recent reforms, women in Saudi Arabia continue to face extensive discrimination, particularly due to the entrenched guardianship system requiring male approval for women to conduct basic activities. The June 2022 personal status law, touted by the Crown Prince as a ‘leap’ forward, codifies discrimination against women in family life and includes many of the horrific aspects of the guardianship system,” said Neuer.

“Women’s rights activists are currently being arbitrarily detained by Saudi Arabia for criticizing the government and advocating for greater freedoms for women, including on social media. In 2023, academic Salma al-Shehab was sentenced to 27 years in prison and a 27-year travel ban for her social media activity, while Nourah al-Qahtani was sentenced to 45 years in prison with a 45-year travel ban.”

“Saudi fitness instructor Manahel al-Otaibi, who was held incommunicado for five months after being detained in November 2023, was recently convicted of terrorism crimes and sentence to 11 years in jail for posting photos of herself without an abaya and advocating to end the guardianship system.”

“Why, then, did the UN name Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s worst oppressors of women as a world judge and guardian of gender equality and the empowerment of women?” asks Neuer.

“By elevating a misogynistic regime to its highest women’s rights body, the UN is sending a message that women’s rights can be sold out for backroom political deals,” said Neuer, “and it betrays millions of female victims in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere who look to the world body for protection.”

UN Commission Turns Blind Eye to World’s Worst Abusers of Women’s Rights

The UN’s commission on the status of women meets every year and has a unique opportunity to hold country violators of women’s rights to account. Yet instead, it systematically ignores them.

For example:

• The CSW has never adopted a single resolution on Saudi Arabia, which, notwithstanding recent limited reforms, subjugates women through its male guardianship system and jails and tortures women’s rights activists.

• The CSW has never adopted a single resolution on Yemen, which ranks at the bottom of the gender equality index (153/153) and where child marriage is pervasive with more than two thirds of girls being married off before age 18.

• The CSW has never adopted a single resolution on the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has been dubbed the “rape capital of the world.”

• The CSW has never adopted a single resolution on Pakistan, where violence against women is on the rise and conviction rates are low—between 2011 and 2017 over 51,000 cases of domestic violence were reported.

• The CSW has never adopted a single resolution on Iran, where women suffer discrimination under the law in key areas such as marriage, family law, age of criminal responsibility, inheritance, and court testimony. The CSW gives a free pass to Iran for its misogynistic modesty laws, under which women are routinely arrested and sentenced to harsh punishments. If a Muslim woman is found in a relationship with a non-Muslim man, she may be sentenced to be whipped. Women have been sent to jail for speaking out in favor of equal rights for women.

In fact, the CSW squanders a golden opportunity to demand accountability and compliance and gives a free pass on the world’s worst abusers of human rights. Instead, it adopts resolutions on general thematic issues joined by all CSW members, including these abusers to the extent they are members. For example, in 2018 CSW members joined in resolutions condemning torture, rape and other forms of sexual violence against women in the context of hostage-taking in armed conflicts; acknowledging the need to “accelerate the realization of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.” In 2021, CSW members reaffirmed “the commitments to gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls made at relevant United Nations summits and conferences,” among other things.

The Election of Saudi Arabia

The 45-member commission unanimously elected Saudi Arabia as chair on March 27, 2024, with no objections, after being the only candidate. Typically the posts rotate among the UN’s five regional groups. The Asia group, which includes Saudi Arabia, had unanimously approved the Saudi candidacy.

In 2022, after the Islamic Republic of Iran was elected a member of the commission, UN Watch led the unprecedented campaign to successfully expel the regime.

“I ask the United Nations: Where is my son?”

On Friday, March 7th, UN Watch gave the floor to the courageous Ayelet Samerano, whose 21-year-old son Yonatan was kidnapped on October 7th — by an UNRWA social worker.

When a so-called UN human rights expert published a report claiming that “UNRWA is under attack,” Ayelet took the floor to tell the world the truth.

Ayelet’s testimony was widely shared on social media in both English and French, and was covered by major Israeli media including Maariv, Channel 13 TV, and ynet.

UN Watch statement to United Nations Human Rights Council, 7 March 2025, delivered by Ayelet Samerano:

“Mr. Rapporteur, in your report, you claim the reputation of UNRWA is ‘under attack.’

I speak today as a mother. My son, Yonatan, 21 years old, was shot on October 7th.

Then an UNRWA social worker kidnapped him. Right now, Yonatan is still held by terrorists in Gaza.

So I know what an attack is. An attack is when terrorists, including UNRWA employees like Mohammad Abu Ittiwi, enter a music festival, and murder innocent, young people.

An attack is when a UN *SOCIAL WORKER*, paid by this organization, kidnaps my son into Gaza. A person who took upon himself to do good — yet did evil.

No, UNRWA is not under attack. UNRWA is the attacker.

An UNRWA teacher held 84-year-old Ditza Heiman captive.

Terrorists held Emily Damari captive — in an UNRWA building.

UNRWA’s entire infrastructure has helped Hamas murder our children.

You talk about human rights. What about Yonatan’s rights? What about the hostages still suffering in Gaza, right now?

Mr. Rapporteur, your report says UNRWA was ‘affected severely by deaths of its staff.’

Does this include the UNRWA worker who kidnapped my Yonatan?

Mr. Rapporteur, I ask you, I ask the United Nations: Where is my son?”
