Wow. Are we already 19 days into the new year? I feel like I haven't posted on the blog for a long time (That's SO unlike me!). I was in London and Paris over Christmas and it has been hard to get back to a routine after the holidays. But here I am now and I have two cards to share.

For the first card, I combined a little bit of print-and-cut with manual die-cutting. I love using my Silhouette Cameo for cutting out SVGs but personally, I think that the metal dies still do a better job with cutting stitched lines. In this case, I printed out the greeting and used a metal die with my Sizzix Big Shot to cut out the scallop circle with stitched lines. The hedgehogs were cut out using my Silhouette Cameo and I drew in the eyes and cheeks with gel pens to reduce bulk.

To be honest, this second card was really just an excuse for me to use my Sizzix Big Shot. Even though I use my Cameo a lot, I never stopped buying metal dies. I'm trying to use them more often so I don't feel so guilty when I buy even more. Ha! Anyway, this card will look just as good if the whole thing was printed out. I have to say though, the layers do make the card a little more interesting given with the extra dimension. The Emu SVG was cut using my Cameo, while the two base layers were cut out using metal dies.

It's 2017!

2016 was a little crazy- we traveled so much! We spent all Summer visiting Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan and spent the recent holiday break in London and Paris. I had initially planned on posting pictures here on the blog but decided to do so on my Instagram instead. If you have not seen the photos, I hope that you would take a peek on my Instagram. We just got home from London and I am still trying to get over the jet lag but I wanted to pop in here quickly to wish everyone a Happy New Year!

From Framed Art to Print-and-Cut Card

December is a busy month for everyone. Even though I love giving out handmade cards, making cards from scratch can be very time-consuming. Every die-cut is carefully layered together until the whole card is assembled. Print-and-cut helps so much in cutting down the time needed to make a card and I was delighted when I saw the Christmas Twelve printables on the LD site last week.

The set includes three graphics that you can print out and frame as wall art but they also look great as cards. To make the cards in this post, I dragged-and-dropped the graphic into the virtual mat in Silhouette Studio (DE) and did the following:

- Trace the image
- Make an offset
- Delete the original trace
- Release Compound Path and delete away the offset for the "Merry Christmas" greeting

To extract the greeting for the card base, I used the Modify>Intersect command.

To add dimension and stitched lines to the card, I cut out an additional layer using the Silhouette Cameo and running the cut-out through my Sizzix Big Shot and a metal die. I finished the card by adhering the layers together with foam tape and added some shimmer with a Wink of Stella glitter pen.

Halloween Cameo Cards

When LD released their Simply Spooky collection the other day, I knew I just had to cut out those Cameos. I've always enjoyed using the LD Simple Shapes- they are so easy to put together (Only 1 layer!) but so versatile! CLICK HERE to see some of the projects that I have made using Simple Shapes.

The Simply Spooky - Cameo Simple Shapes are no exception. They may look intricate but my Silhouette Cameo cut them out easily. For the two cards that I am sharing today, I actually cut each of the simple shapes 3 times and layered them together to add some dimension. I also heat-embossed the top layer of the witch cameo with black embossing power to add texture to the card.

As much as I like the simplicity of the Simple Shapes, sometimes I just want to add a little color to the design. For example, I wanted the skeleton to look out of a colored frame, just like the style in the Simply Spooky Graphic Set. Since there is no corresponding Cut Set for those graphics, I used Silhouette Studio to remove the skeleton from the frame.

I am using Silhouette Studio v2.9.67d (a.k.a. Legacy version). If you are using a different version of the software, your screen may look different from mine but you should still have the MODIFY tool in your program.

One more thing... the greeting on both cards were cut out from a scrap piece of vinyl that I had leftover from a previous project. I used the vinyl cut-out on one card and the negative for the other.

Clever, eh? lol.

My almost-forgotten cards

In my previous post I mentioned that I had made a couple of cards prior to my Summer vacation but had forgotten to post them on the blog. I showed you some of them yesterday that were super easy to make. Here are a few that took a little longer to put together and so I didn't include them in that "15-min cards" article.

First up is this "Thank You" card. I wanted the "Thanks scallop border" die as soon as I saw it on the Simon Says Stamps website. Isn't it pretty?

I don't use stamps that require coloring very often but when the mood strikes, I always find myself reaching out for a Mama Elephant stamp. My favorite part about this bunny is that coffee cup. So so cute!

A lot of my twin daughters' friends are turning 13 this year and I had made this birthday card with one of their friends in mind. I ended up not giving it to her. Instead, I got my daughter to make her a card herself but I did lend her the stamps. Hehe.

Jin's 15-min cards

While looking through the photographs that I took on our recent vacation to Singapore and Japan, I came across a couple that were of cards that I had made prior to the trip. I had originally intended to post these as pre-scheduled blog posts but I was so busy preparing for the trip that I never got around to doing that.

And so here they are. I'm posting them a lot later than I had intended but like they say, it's better to be late then never.

These cards, like my Easy Die-Cuts Cards, were made in 15-mins or less. I used a simple rubber stamp by Kodomo No Kao and metal dies by Mama Elephant. The stamps that I used for the envelopes are also by Mama Elephant.

p.s. I am not affiliated with Kodomo no Kao, or Mama Elephant.

I love the simplicity of this card. The stamp alone is too cute and I love that I can use it with any sentiment to send a message.

To add some color to the cards, I used a strip of washi tape. The word "thanks" was cut out using a metal die and my Sizzix Big Shot.

A panda card must have a panda envelope to go with it, right? I can't tell you how much I adore the panda stamps at Mama Elephant. I *heart* them a lot!

For a less cutesy look, I left out the panda stamp and just used the die-cut with washi tape to make some quick Thank You cards. I never seem to have enough of those.

I also made a few easy note cards by replacing the "thanks" with a simple "hello".

I am a hoarder of craft supplies and it is such an irony that some of my favorite cards are the ones that are super simple, like this "OH SO happy" card. I used scrap pieces of cardstock to cut out the "happy" and the hill. The "OH SO" letters were stamped using a set of alphabet stamps.

My two 13 year olds are the biggest fans of Harry Potter that I know. Like most (if not all) Potterheads, they know all the spells and all the details of the magical world created by JK Rowling. Their interest in all things Harry Potter deepened even further after Hubby and I brought them on a trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida. I still remember how excited they were when they had their first taste of Butter Beer! Click HERE for my trip report if you had missed it before.

One day it dawned upon them that since many of their friends are huge Potterheads too, they should belong to a Harry Potter Club. Since there wasn't one in school, they decided to create one. I was so amused when they excitedly announced at the end of the last school year that they had received the Principal's approval. They are the founders of the new Harry Potter Club! The meetings will start in the 2016-17 school year. Woohoo!

Fast forward to today. The first meeting of the newly formed club is happening as I am writing this. The kids had made and distributed posters of their club but I offered to make them a couple more.

Here is a phone photo of the posters that was taken in the wee hours of the morning. What do you think? Too cute for middle schoolers? The twins liked them and brought them to school the other week.

I cannot wait for them to come home and tell me all about their first Dumbledore Army meeting.

TUTORIAL: How to Make Note Cards from Bag Toppers in 5 Easy Steps

LD is giving away a free printable file this week that is intended for use as treat bag toppers. The Hinterland graphics look so cute I thought they would look adorable as note cards too.

If you'd like to make these note cards, here's a quick tutorial for you. I used Silhouette Studio DE (Legacy) but you can easily make them using any other versions of the software as well.

STEP 1: Draw a 4"x3.5" rectangle. Set the line size to 0 so that the box will not be printed.

STEP 2: Fill the box with one of the PNG files included in the set. I just drag-and-drop the image into the box.

STEP 3: Type in the greeting and align it where ever you want it to show on the card.

STEP 4: Use Fill Color to show the text in black and set the Line Color to transparent.

STEP 5: To help position the card on the paper so that there is enough room to cut it out, draw a 4"x7" rectangle. Align the card front to the right of the larger box and center the whole thing on the page. You can set the line size of the bigger box to 0 so that it will not be printed out or you can set it to a very light grey to use as a guide for manual cutting.

Now just print and cut it out. You can fit two cards to a page and manually cut them out with a paper trimmer. You can also use print-and cut. Don't forget to turn on the registration marks if you are doing the latter.

Personally, I thought it was easier to cut out the cards manually and so I did just that. I also rounded the corners with a corner rounder.

We had a great Summer but I'm glad that Fall is finally here. The air is getting cooler and the leaves are changing colors. Pumpkins are starting to line the grocery stores. I'm not looking forward to the windy nights and I'm not into pumpkin spice lattes but I really love the smell and taste of spiced apple cider. Mmm....

Some of my favorite LD designs are also Autumn-themed. The Fall Dolls are too cute while the Fall Foliage cards look so good they can be used for any season.

I just found out that Silhouette is no longer allowing users of the Legacy version to access the online store through the software (Thanks, Kelly Curry!). If you attempt to go to the store via Silhouette Studio v2.9.67, this error message shows up:

You will also no longer be able to download your pending orders through the software.

I sent Silhouette America an email asking them about it this morning but I have yet to receive a reply at the time of this post. My friend, Kay Hall, did get this message from them:

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. Two years ago, our Design Store website was changed from www.silhouetteonlinestore.com to www.silhouettedesignstore.com. Recently, the old website link, www.silhouetteonlinestore.com, was retired and no longer redirects you to our current store website.

Older versions of the software (v2.9 and older) use the online store link to access the store, which will no longer connect. You may see an Error 118 message where the store page should be.

As the version 2 of the software has not been our current release for almost 2 years, we can no longer support connections between version 2 of Silhouette Studio software and the Design Store. The only resolution to this is to update your software which can be done here, http://www.silhouetteamerica.com/software#update

We apologize for this inconvenience. If you have any additional questions, please let us know.

Ever since Silhouette released version 3, we suspected that they would phase out version 2 eventually. I even posted last June that "my days of using the Legacy version are numbered anyway" when they took away access to the online store for all non-v3 users with the exception of v2.9.67 (a.k.a. the Legacy version). I was glad when the last update to v2, i.e. the Legacy version, was released as this meant that folks like me who do not want to use v3 can continue to access the online store from within the program. At that time, we were given a deadline to install the update before access to the store was halted. Imagine my surprise that no notice was given to us this time around. In fact, at the time of this post, the Silhouette website does not even mention that access to the online store has been taken away.

I mostly use SVG files with my Silhouette software. Even though I still have a lot of credits on my account, I find that I hardly use the designs from the Silhouette Design Store. But still, it was nice to be able to access the store and download their weekly freebies. Now I can't even do that unless I upgrade to v3. I'm not sure if that is worth my time since I am still finding that v3s are buggy and not fun to use.

If you use the Legacy version and the designs from the Silhouette Design Store, you may want to drop them an email and request that they bring back access to the store. You can find their contact info HERE.
