Hate to admit it but started winter feeding (earliest date for us). Could have grazed regrowth but would only have weakened grass for next year. Cows and calves look good though so will delay weaning calves (only 5-6 month old) until cows' condition starts to slide.

All I need to do now is fill the blank rows with straw bales and we'll be ready for winter bale grazing. I'll still need to string the moveable electric fence, wait for snow, get the cows, plan some winter holidays, but you get the picture.

I'm sure I wouldn't like the "smell of napalm in the morning". I'm much more into the sights, sounds and smells on a crisp fall morning in Sask while building fence. Too bad pict doesn't show Sandhill Cranes, geese, and Speckle Park cattle -that I also see! Anyone want to help?

"What do cattle think about?", and what do they feel, are central to understanding cattle welfare. This article captures a lot of my perspective on the work that I do, studying cattle behaviour.

Lots of tweets to me on the evils of modern farming. So let’s take a look at the reality of Victorian agriculture: It relied on cyanide, lead & mercury as pest control & abused children as labour. Labourer life expectancy was ~40. Yet it was worse at feeding the country.

Think low-stress weaning won’t work on large herds? Think again! Four producers explain how and why they use low-stress weaning on their beef farms:

Sometimes just a simple exchange can make your spouse smile/laugh. Take this morning for example, "Gayle, do you want to help me move the electric fence?" "If you let me finish my tea first". "Sure Honey. I want you to enjoy life too."
