    The cake in the oven can't cook quick enough for me. Because I KNOW finding the solution to my plot problem involves me eating some cake. (And no, that's not a euphemism for anything. I just want to eat some goddam cake.)

    And despair. I'm in deep despair. I've thrown all kinds of crap at my poor main character (& TBH it's still probably not enough) and now? How do I get her out of it? Fuckity fuck fuck fuck. I hate writing so much. (Only when I'm doing it.) It's too hard. (No it's not.)

    But noooo! I did NOT figure out the final 1/4! Ha ha! Not at all! I figured out all the way to the "all is lost" part. That's where I am now. So what does any dedicated writer do? Bake a gluten free chocolate cake with raspberry filling and vanilla frosting, of course!

    The speed with which I switch from "Hey, this is some pretty good stuff, I'm not too bad at this writing thing..." to "Oh my god this is the worst, I should quit writing right now," is amazing. Lightning speed! (FTR, I'm not quitting, even tho it might actually suck.)

    Yes, I DID just make gluten free vegetable fried rice & shrimp egg foo young for myself as a break to outlining my still-not-yet-finished MG manuscript. For the 5th time. That's just how I roll... + I think I solved the pacing issue & finally figured out the final 1/4!

    I sometimes tweet out hard cold doses of reality about publishing. But this thread makes the important point that having realistic expectations =/= pessimism or selling yourself short. Be prepared to not get everything that you hope for, but hope and work for it anyway. (1/2)

    But also DO NOT SET LOW STANDARDS FOR YOURSELF. Assert your desires (in a respectful way). Don't NOT ask for what you want from your team bc you assume based on fatalist stories you won't get it and don't deserve it. This is how people think they shouldn't be paid to write. 6/8

    Great thread for debut authors re: making friends vs. making "friends." Same could be said for baby agents. Make friends w/other authors/agents because we hold each other up, can support each other when things are tough, learn from each other. It's a small industry.

    Seeing a lot of advice for debuts re: making friends and I 1000% agree and my friends have been a lifeline in this industry, but I'm going to add two notes to it: 1) Don't bother if your friendship with someone is going to be contingent on them reading and/or liking your book.
