    Tufte with a succinct, incisive formula for what statistics at its best is, and what machine learning/data science can be.

    Instead of more of same, confirm by honest replication, avoid surrogate and marker measures, assess vs. competing models (equally tuned ), no hiding behind patents and proprietary formats, and, best all, successful causal interventions in the the real world.

    The numbers are all fking fake, the metrics are bullshit, the agencies responsible for enforcing good practices are knowing bullshiters enforcing and profiting off all the fake numbers and none of the models make sense at scale of actual human users.

    Um, , even the authors say they cannot say their findings are causal… "but whether this finding is a result of the policy requires further research.” Why do you promote the paper as proving harm? Need to treat twitter like you do any of your Editorial comments.

    yes—it’s hard to fundamentally explain why it works, and moreover how to best tweak/improve it... and no—there’s no hidden information, just a *lot* of it. much like any game of perfect information, it’s theoretically knowable... with bigger/better brains and/or computers.
