    Lottie passed in 1914. Her last piece of writing was a scatching response to a racist letter to the editor. In effect, it was of 1889.

    Charlotte (known as Lottie) then attend the Salem Normal (Teacher) School and would become the first Black teacher in a White Salem school.

    She attended Higginson Grammar School, a private girls' school, and received a rich liberal arts ed, with an emphrasis on critcal thinking.

    Born in Philedalphia in 1837, her family history was complex. Her father & his family were free as Northeners. Her Southern mother's wasn't.

    The school served the community's children until 1954. It's now in the National Register of Historical Places.

    Most of the Black educators' names are lost to history. Their descendents, though, built Cherry Hill School on the same location in 1837.

    The Cherry Hill Classroom was a multi-purpose space that served as a church and school, holding day and night classes.

    Although dozens of White women responded to Sherman's call to help, Black educators' thinking shaped the schools and towns' development.

    Mitchelville, on Hilton Head Island, is one of the towns for recently freed slaves built during the Port Royal Experiment (1862-1865).

    Sara left teaching when he AMA feared a retaliation from the KKK to her marriage to a White teacher. Her lessons, though, her work endures.

    Sara eventually connected with the AMA and worked in schools for recently freed enslaved people. ()

    One of the ways in which Sara used her voice was to directly call-out White teachers who were disrepectful to her or their Black pupils.
