    Today, four D-Day veterans received the Legion d’Honneur, France’s highest honour, for their breathtaking bravery aboard D-Day vessel, HMS Belfast.   We are continuously grateful to our Normandy veterans for their unimaginable sacrifices 75 years ago.

    Absolute privilege to meet some of our veterans who took part in the D Day landings in Normandy. So moving to hear their stories and see them presented with the Legion d’Honneur on HMS Belfast. Today marks 100 days until the anniversary of the landings.

    was the flagship of Bombardment Force E, supporting troops landing at Gold and Juno beaches on . The ship’s log records she opened fire at 0527 on 6 June. She spent 33 days supporting the Normandy landings and fired over 5,000 shells.

    Patrick said receiving the honour made him feel 'out of this world'. 'It was a job that had to be done... Today means memories of many men who were with me, I wasn't on my own, I wasn't a hero by any means.'

    Patrick Reardon served on HMS Sheffield and landed on Omaha beach on D-Day. He was part of a Forward Observation Bombardment team sending vital information from on shore back to the ships bombarding the coast.

    Charles Kavanagh, an Able Seamen, helped land tanks on Sword beach on D-Day and later supported with landing supplies for the US Army on Omaha beach.

    John Nicholls was on HMS Argonaut on D-Day. His ship fired on German gun batteries and John helped drive landing craft from ship to shore.

    'I was a very junior rating, I was a boy' Denis Haley was a 17 year old signalman aboard HMS Southward Ho. His ship towed parts of a temporary portable harbour from Portsmouth to Arromanches on 7 June 1944.

    Ted Cordery served on board HMS Belfast from 1943-1944 as a Leading Seaman Torpedoman. This morning on , he spoke very movingly about his memories of being on board the ship on D-Day.
