While many spotlighted new blogs focus on individual family history, there are quite a few in other categories and even some unique ones.

As an offshoot of two other blogs Rogers Family History and Teresa’s Tangled Roots, the author has stumbled into a collection of vintage photographs. "It has always disturbed me how many thousands and thousands of 'ancestor' photos are out there in antique stores and on eBay that no one knows who they belong to.  As a genealogist who would give anything to have pictures of her ancestors, it just kills me to see these orphan pictures unclaimed my anyone. These are someone’s family, their ancestors and I wonder sometimes as I look at them if one of them could possibly be one of my ancestors.  As a collector of anything and everything, I have started buying up some of these photos and felt I needed to start sharing these somehow.  Most have no names – why didn’t people put names on the back of these pictures?!?  I will try to post many of the many photos I have, perhaps someone will recognize one or two.  If you do, please let me know, I would be happy to reunite these photographs (people) with their descendants if contacted."

LOC: New preservation blog launched

The Library of Congress digital preservation program is now part of the blogosphere, according to an LOC announcement today.

Part of the potential audience for the new blog are genealogists and family history researchers:

"The audience for us to interact with is potentially vast, as we are very interested in personal digital archiving: helping individuals and families preserve their digital photographs and other digital files that document their lives."

The new blog - The Signal - authored by digital initiatives manager Bill LeFurgy, who writes in the initial post that the official program name is the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program, or NDIIPP (say N-DIP).

In 2000, Congress directed the LOC to undertake a national digital preservation program to address the large-scale challenge of digital preservation. Huge amounts of digital content were being created with no print equal, and that some content was needed to create records of the times we live in.

However, the amount of information was larger than what could made accessible. Because so much data could be lost, Congress created NDIIPP to lessen that risk.

Over the last 10 years we have built a national network of collaborative partnerships to help preserve important digital content, build new tools and develop best practices. The partnerships span different communities, including universities, federal and state government agencies and the commercial creative content industry.  This is a new approach. Libraries, archives and other memory institutions traditionally have worked separately to acquire and manage their collections. But digital is different—it calls for a new kind of capacity that is difficult for a single institution to build on its own. The only practicable way forward is collaboration: in building technical infrastructure, in sharing knowledge, in developing best practices and in assigning roles and responsibilities for stewarding digital collections.

Concerning preservation, he writes that technology is the easy part of digital preservation programs, but that social is the harder part. He talks about collaboration and the Internet, and mentions the LOC website digitalpreservation.gov which provides a rich collection of information and resources.

They have spoken to experts, list tools and services and shared global information. Future plans include looking at the spectrum of data, from large scientific databases to modest personal digital collections of documents. Interviews are planned with people from many fields.

I started researching the Gunzendorfers about a year ago and have branched out in so many directions with the help of my partner-in-genealogy, Jan. I’ve learned that my 5th great grandfather on my mother’s side, Ashbel Waller, served in the Revolutionary War. And his grandson, Emery Waller, (my 3rd great grandfather) served in the Civil War. I’ve learned that just like my grandmothers told me when we gave our daughter the middle name of Rebecca, both of their grandmothers really were named Rebecca (Steen and Waller). I’ve learned that my dad’s family really are Jewish and that the Jews in California have been studied and researched – a lot. And while I’m not ready to throw in the towel just yet, I’ve learned that there really might not be any Gunzendorfers left in the United States. Who knew Mom might be right?

Hawaiian genealogy sure has come a long way from the days when I 1st started searching the web back in 1998. There were a handful of personal sites with info on Hawaiian genealogy back then and some are still around, the same site from the nineties frozen in time. Thomas MacEntee of Geneabloggers has discovered another 23 genealogy blogs, making the total of geneablogs at his site now 1,629.

Tracing the Tribe experienced a technical glitch with the last group of more than 30 new blogs, but will fix and post that previous list in the near future.

This week's batch includes one for the MOT's - Ancestral Discoveries - by Tracing the Tribe's friend and professional genealogist Janice M. Sellers, who will focus on genealogy education, Jewish genealogy and professional genealogy, using more than three decades of broad experience.

My blog hopes to inform people about interesting things in genealogy and to connect them with professionals who can help them find the information they are looking for. I have 35 years of experience with a broad range of research and specialize in Jewish research.

Tracing the Tribe's good friend Elise Friedman (Boca Raton, Florida) - who works with and speaks on genetic genealogy - now has a website Relative Roots, a companion blog, and is beginning a series of free webinars, starting tomorrow.

Elise plans to host genealogy webinars several times a month beginning this month. She's starting with genetic genealogy and will offer others focusing on other topics in the future.

Food: Artisanal honeys and more

Jewish Women's Magazine blog, "Beyond Brisket," authored by Jayne Cohen, has a post on the many varieties of artisanal honey, and another one ending the Yom Kippur fast in a traditional Italian way.

The honey blog post covers such varieties as lavender, blueberry, tupelo, sweet clover; star thistle (from Israel); from Mexico, smokey mesquite, avocado, orange blossom; Greek thyme and herbs, Italian acacia, lime blossom and more. The post includes where to get these specialties.

If you absolutely can’t get a special honey for the holiday, try this to make your plain honey more distinctive: warm one cup of honey in a small saucepan. Stir in sprigs of fresh thyme, rosemary or mint; fresh sage leaves; or two teaspoons of dried lavender. Cover and let steep for several hours, then, heating the honey if necessary, strain it.

For breaking the Yom Kippur fast, there's a a moist, dairy-free almond sponge cake bocca di dama, brought - along with others - by Portuguese Jews who settled in Livorno.
