New Optimized Audio Drivers for Onboard Realtek ALC 889 and ALC 892

Toleda has released two new patched AppleHDA audio drivers designed to optimize any motherboard with the Realtek ALC 889 or Realtek ALC 892 audio codecs. This is the best and most complete support that we've ever seen. The new one-kext solution supports most Mac OS X Lion analog and digital audio capabilities. It is designed to be an alternate or replacement for the combination of both AppleHDA Rollback and ALC8xxHDA. Proper DSDT edits are still required.

One unique feature of the driver is the ability to alternate between 2 different layout-ids, enabling either most onboard devices, or HDMI audio with slightly limited onboard devices.  For example, in order to get HD 3000 HDMI audio, you will need to change your layout id in your DSDT's HDEF section to 389. The default 889, used in the DSDT Database, will enable the optimal onboard analog and digital options.

The default 889 layout-id is for maximum onboard choices.

The new 389 layout-id is for HD 3000 HDMI + most onboard choices.
Improvements include front panel audio with mute, better audio quality, less popping, and HDMI audio if configured.
Toleda's new patched AppleHDA for Realtek ALC 889 is available in the forum along with full documentation. A similar kext optimized for Realtek ALC 892 is also available now. Install using KextBeast.

After some testing, we'll be adding these to MultiBeast. Any feedback and comments are greatly appreciated!

HDMI Audio Solutions: Intel HD 3000 Graphics

We've recently figured out how to enable HDMI Audio on the Sandy Bridge Intel HD 3000 onboard graphics controller! This is a rather advanced procedure, and requires editing both your DSDT and the audio kexts. If you have a GA-H67N-USB3-B3 and want to test, or aren't up for the challenge, we've included pre-edited files at the end of this article.

Requirements:
  • Mac OS X 10.7.x Lion
  • Gigabyte Socket 1155 H61, H67, or Z68 Motherboard
  • Intel Core i3/i5/i7 CPU featuring HD 3000 onboard graphics
    • Current Desktop Models: i3-2105, i3-2125, i5-2405S, i5-2500K, i7-2600K
  • Chimera v1.5 or later - available in MultiBeast 4.0: Lion Edition
  • Mac mini 5,1 system definition - available in MultiBeast 4.0: Lion Edition
  • AppleHDA.kext 2.1.1 or later (10.7.1)
    • If you've used AppleHDA Rollback, get a new 2.1.1 here
  • Plist Editor - like Plist Edit Pro
  • Hex Editor - like Hex Fiend
  • DSDT Editor - like DSDTSE
  • Kext Installer - like KextBeast
NOTE: Most Gigabyte H61/H67/Z68 motherboards have Realtek ALC 889, so this guide will use that codec in the examples.

STEP 1: Edit AppleHDAHardwareConfigDriver.kext
The first step is to add your onboard audio information to the AppleHDA hardware configuration plugin.

     1. Copy your unedited AppleHDA.kext to Desktop. Make sure it's v2.1.1 or later.
2, Right-click AppleHDA.kext and choose Show Package Contents
     3. Open Contents/PlugIns/AppleHDAHardwareConfigDriver.kext/Contents/Info.plist
4, Look for IOKitPersonalities > HDA Hardware Config Resource > HDAConfigDefault
     5. Remove all configurations (1-17) except 0
     6. Edit configuration 0 to match the following:
  • CodecID: 283,904,137
  • ConfigData: 21471C10 21471D40 21471E11 21471F01 21571C20 21571D10 21571E01 21571F01 21671C30 21671D60 21671E01 21671F01 21771C80 21771D20 21771E01 21771F01 21871C40 21871D90 21871EA1 21871F90 21971C50 21971D90 21971EA1 21971F02 21A71C60 21A71D30 21A71E81 21A71F01 21B71C70 21B71D40 21B71E21 21B71F02 21E71C90 21E71D61 21E71E4B 21E71F01 21F71CA0 21F71D71 21F71ECB 21F71F01
  • FuncGroup: 3
  • LayoutID: 889
STEP 2: Add Layout889.xml to AppleHDA.kext
The next step is to add codec-specific layout information to AppleHDA.

     1. Navigate to AppleHDA.kext/Contents/Resources/layout12.xml
     2. Right click layout12.xml, choose Duplicate
     3. Rename layout12 copy.xml to layout889.xml
     4. Open layout889.xml with Plist Edit Pro
     5. Edit the top 2 sections to match the following:
  • LayoutID: 889
  • CodecID: 283,904,137
     6. Save and copy layout889.xml to AppleHDA.kext/Contents/Resources
STEP 3: Binary Patch AppleHDA.kext (Optional)
If you plan to use onboard audio in addition to HDMI audio, you must patch the AppleHDA binary. If not, skip this step.

     1. Open AppleHDA.kext/Contents/MacOS/AppleHDA binary file using Hex Fiend
     2. Type command-F to initiate Find and Replace menu
     3. Enter 85 08 EC 10 in Find field,
     4. Enter 89 08 EC 10 in Replace field.
     5. Click Replace All
     6. Save file.
STEP 4: Install AppleHDA.kext
     1. Place patched AppleHDA.kext on Desktop
     2. Run KextBeast
    STEP 5: DSDT Edits
In order for the system to recognize that you want audio from the HDMI port, you have to edit your DSDT. This next step assumes you have already installed a pre-edited DSDT from our DSDT Database.

         1. Open your /Extra/DSDT.aml with DSDTSE
         2. Search for HDEF
         3. Add "hda-gfx" "onboard-2" code snippet to Device (HDEF) section as shown.

         4. Search for IGD0
         5. Add "hda-gfx" "onboard-2" code snippet to Device (IGD0) section as shown.

         6. Save and Compile
         7. Replace your /Extra/DSDT.aml with the new one.
STEP 6: Compare Your Work (Optional)
Download and compare your files vs. these verified versons.
      STEP 6: Reboot
Reboot system with the HDMI cable plugged at boot. Use the 2nd HDMI slot on the GA-H67N-USB3-B3. Congratulations! You're done!
We'll be re-posting a series of guides updated for 10.7 Lion in the HDMI Audio section of the forum in the next week or so. These will show how to enable HDMI Audio on most compatible AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards. Special thanks to toleda for all the testing and research!

      Good luck!

How To Get iBoot Functionality From MultiBeast

One of the top questions on the forum these days seems to be how to get the functionality of iBoot when booting from the hard drive. For novices, it seems like the process ends after the Combo Update. But iBoot was designed as an installation tool only- not as a permanent solution for post-installation. It is NOT a boot crutch. By using it as such, you are limiting the functionality and upgradeability of your system. Fortunately, MultiBeast contains the same drivers and files as iBoot and can allow most things to work without using a DSDT.

We created MultiBeast to solve the post-installation problem. When installed, the following MultiBeast options will allow boot from a 1 TB or less hard drive or partition, universal audio, network, and graphics. These are not the only drivers available, and may not give optimized performance. However, these options will allow you to be rid of iBoot as a boot crutch.

      ATI Graphics

      NVIDIA Graphics
Good luck, and see you on the forum!

      MultiBeast 3.0 Update

Today MultiBeast was updated to version 3.0.  We've made quite a few structural changes, including enabling all choices, so no options are greyed out.  The downside to this is you can now choose to install everything within a category.  Only check the top level choice and the specific sub-choice options.  Checking the category, or root option will most likely corrupt your installation by installing unwanted or unneeded options.

Please do not upload or redistribute MultiBeast to any other sites.
      Full list of changes:
      • Restructured menus: Advanced Options now separated into Drivers & Bootloaders and Customization.

      HDMI Audio + Video Solutions

It's now possible to get HDMI digital audio + video outputs working on your custom build.  The trick is to get a supported graphics card.  Here are a few methods to enable HDMI audio + video using an NVIDIA GT 220 or GT 240 graphics card with a Gigabyte motherboard.

NOTE: Since the NVIDIA GT 220 or GT 240 has its own audio chip, you may lose audio functionality with your current onboard audio solution.

UPDATE: The Easy Method also works for the NVIDIA 430, 450, 460, 465, 475, and 480, since they also have an onboard audio chip.  Advanced Method is not working.

Easy Method: VoodooHDA + Graphics Enablers
Enabling video is the first step.  You may use any of the methods described in this article: Enable Full Graphics Card Acceleration.

With VoodooHDA, a complete replacement audio solution, you can use your HDMI device without any further configuration.  To test, install a VoodooHDA version through MultiBeast.  Since some of these drivers are experimental, you may get kernel panics on install and with use.  In my own experience, VoodooHDA 0.2.1 and 0.2.56 work best for the GT 240.  You'll find upon reboot that in Audio/Midi Setup and System Preferences there are 4 Digital Options- the second one works for HDMI audio out.

Advanced Method: AppleHDA + DSDT Graphics
Using the default AppleHDA is also possible, with HDMI identified as built-in.  You can configure the NVIDIA GT 240 to use the native AppleHDA.kext for your HDMI solution independent of any onboard audio chip.  This method is considerably more advanced.

NOTE: Use 10.6.4 AppleHDA or earlier, 10.6.5 or later will NOT work with this method.

STEP 1: ENABLE GRAPHICS THROUGH DSDT
Configure your graphics card without kexts, Chameleon's GraphicsEnabler or EFI strings using the following article as a guide: Advanced DSDT Fixes: NVIDIA Graphics.  GT 240 users can skip this step.

STEP 2: ADD HDMI AUDIO TO DSDT
Next, we'll add HDMI audio edits to the graphics section of our DSDT.
      1. Download and open DSDT-GT240+HDMI.dsl using DSDTSE
      2. Open your DSDT.aml
      3. Type Device (PCI0) in the search box to return to your previous graphics edit.
      4. Compare and copy/paste the information as necessary.  NOTE: GT 240 owners can copy/paste the entire section including the full graphics code,
      5. Compile and save your new DSDT.aml
      6. Paste to /Extra/ as DSDT.aml
STEP 3: REMOVE ALL EXISTING GRAPHICS ENABLERS
You must now remove all Enablers, GraphicsEnabler=Yes, and EFI Strings from your system to test the new injection.
      1. Open /Extra/Extensions and /System/Library/Extensions
      2. Delete any graphics enabler kexts in both locations such as NVEnabler or ATY_init.
      3. Open /Extra/Extensions/ and open com.apple.boot.plist in TextEdit
      4. Delete any EFI String information and GraphicsEnabler=Yes
      5. Save com.apple.boot.plist
      STEP 4: PATCH APPLEHDA BINARY
In order to use AppleHDA.kext for HDMI audio, GT 240 users will need to patch the HDMI audio device id from the standard 0x10DE000A to 0x10DE000D using a Hex editor.  GT 220 users can skip this step.
      1. Make sure you're updated to the latest version of Mac OS X.
      2. Navigate in Finder to /System/Library/Extensions
      3. Copy your AppleHDA.kext to Desktop
      4. Download and install Hex Fiend
      5. Right click on AppleHDA.kext and choose Show Package Contents
      6. Navigate to /Contents/MacOS/
      7. Copy AppleHDA to Desktop
      8. Right click on AppleHDA and choose Open With…
      9. Choose Hex Fiend
      10. Type Command-F to bring up Find and Replace menubar
      11. Copy and paste 0A 00 DE 10 in Find
      12. Copy and paste 0D 00 DE 10 in Replace
      13. Click Replace All
      14. Save AppleHDA
      15. Go back to your previously opened ~/Desktop/AppleHDA.kext
      16. Right click on AppleHDA.kext and choose Show Package Contents
      17. Navigate to /Contents/MacOS/
      18. Delete AppleHDA
      19. Copy and paste AppleHDA from Desktop to /Contents/MacOS/
      20. Download KextBeast
      21. Run KextBeast to install the new AppleHDA.kext and rebuild caches.
      22. Reboot
