How I Tested…

I integrated both of these skincare tools into my daily routine over the last six weeks. I paid attention to any improvements in my skin’s texture, scalp balance and hair growth, irritation, and if these tools could seamlessly be added into my day-to-day routine.

Test Results…

• Foreo Luna 4 Mini: Of the two products I tested, this is the one you should buy. It has one button. Press once for a minute-long routine that’ll buzz in 15 second intervals to prompt you to move the device to different parts of your face. Press twice for one 30-second “Glow Booster” setting for days where you’re short on time. It’s waterproof, so you can keep it in the shower and it’s made of a soft, hygienic silicone that won’t get moldy. It connects to a corresponding app via Bluetooth, where you can adjust its built-in timer routine based on your needs. The app will also show you the device’s battery status. When using the Foreo Luna Mini, I was impressed at how smooth my skin was after. It felt like I used a powerful scrub with beads, without the irritation or damage to my skin barrier.

• Foreo 4 Hair: This is the brand’s new scalp-care device. In addition to the same waterproof silicone base, it also has red light therapy and pulsations to stimulate blood flow. The pulsations are also meant to help with exfoliation, cutting back on flaking and promoting hair growth. Just like other Foreo devices, you can select from a variety of routines and make timer adjustments based on your needs via the app. The brand says that you can use this on dry hair in areas where you need exfoliation or want to stimulate hair growth, or in the shower to distribute shampoo and conditioner. I used this mainly on dry hair along my part and my hair line. I have fine hair, but a lot of it, though I’ve noticed some slight changes to my part in the last year. In terms of immediate results, I noticed that the blood stimulation to my scalp would add a bit of temporary volume on dry hair. Using it in the shower to distribute shampoo and conditioner didn’t create any noticeable results. Instead, it just felt like an extra, unnecessary step in my haircare routine.

Sidenotes…

• Foreo Luna 4 Mini: I used the Luna Mini three-to-four times a week, but it’s definitely gentle enough for everyday use. The front has thinner nodes, while the back has thicker ones. For my sensitive skin, I used the front side of the device. My skin didn’t look brighter per se, but I felt a noticeable texture difference when applying my skincare after. I love how it sloughed off the dry skin around my nose.

• Foreo Luna 4 Hair: To me, this device isn’t worth the $200 cost, as I didn’t notice a huge difference in the two-ish months that I tested this product. I know that hair goes through a 90-day growth cycle, so I might need more testing time. That said, if you want to use a red light therapy device for the entire body, I love this one from Solawave that’s a fraction of the cost.

How I tested…

I wore the Sonos Ace headphones during my weekday commute for over three months. Whenever I was getting on the subway, bus, or train, I took them with me. I worked out in them, too.

Test Results…

• Sound quality. I love the sound quality. I'm not an audiophile, just a regular person looking for a solid listening experience, and these without question fit the bill. The noise is rich, crisp, and clear. To rattle off a few talking points, they have active noise cancellation, an aware mode, dynamic head tracking, smart sensing (the headphones sense when they're on versus off, so if you remove them, your music pauses), and more.

• Battery life. I've owned these headphones for months, at least three or four, and I've worn them continuously since I got them. I charge them every once in a blue moon, which translates to once every 3-4 weeks. They provide up to 30 hours of listening time and charge rapidly so I never have them plugged in for longer than an hour.

• Connectivity. They connect to my devices via Bluetooth, but really what I want to highlight here is that the connection has been seamless. They connect the second I turn them on and have never disconnected from my mobile. I haven't experienced a lag when switching between my cell and laptop.

• Controls. I find the controls very intuitive to use. The Content Key slides up and down to adjust volume, while pressing down once can pause music. Twice skips songs.

• Aesthetic. They're sleek and cool-looking, for lack of a better adjective. They're not Apple AirPods Max, but they have a similar appearance if you're interested in them as a status symbol.

Sidenotes…

• Comfort. For the most part, these are very comfortable headphones. I find it important to note that as a headache-prone person, sometimes the band can cause discomfort after 30 minutes of wear. This doesn't happen all the time, but I compared the Ace with Bose's Quiet Comfort and I must admit I find the Quiet Comfort to be easier to wear for longer periods of time.

• Price. This bullet speaks for itself but they're an investment at nearly $500 dollars.

• Packability. The earmuffs lay flat so they're not the most annoying thing to pack, but they don't bend. Most times I sit them upright in my backpack, but I kind of hate that they're floating around if I don't use the case. If I was traveling internationally, I would bring the case for durability. If I'm taking the train to Long Island to visit my family, I just store them uncased after wearing.

While most people grew up with chicken and rice, in my home, pearled couscous was the go-to grain pairing for chicken. This one-pot no-fuss meal is my take on a dinner my mother used to make for any picky eaters visiting us. The chicken gets seared until golden and crispy, the couscous is toasted in the rendered schmaltz. Stir in the secret ingredient — chicken bouillon for that ultimate chicken-soup flavor — then steam it all in the oven. Finish the chicken dinner with a bright, herby sauce for some extra freshness.

Garlicky Chicken and Couscous

• 4 to 6 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs (1½ to 2 pounds total)

• Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 3 tablespoons neutral oil, such as sunflower or grapeseed

• 2 medium shallots, finely sliced

• 1½ cups pearled (Israeli) couscous or orzo

• 15 garlic cloves, lightly crushed and peeled

• 1 chicken bouillon cube or 2 teaspoons chicken bouillon powder

Dill Topping

• 1⁄3 cup chopped fresh dill

• 1⁄3 cup brined capers, drained, rinsed, and finely chopped

• 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

• 2 tablespoons rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar

• 3 garlic cloves, finely grated or minced

• 1 teaspoon red chile flakes, plus more to taste

• Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. Make the garlicky chicken and couscous: Preheat the oven to 425°F. Using a paper towel, pat the chicken thighs dry. Season generously on all sides with salt and pepper.

2. In a 12-inch cast-iron or other ovenproof skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil over medium heat. Add the chicken skin-side down and cook until the skin looks golden and crisp, and releases easily from the pan, 6 to 8 minutes. If the chicken skin sticks when you try to flip it, it just needs more time to crisp. Flip and cook until golden, 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a plate.

3. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons oil and the shallots to the hot pan and cook until the shallots are slightly softened, about 2 minutes. Add the couscous and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until it’s fragrant and turning a toasty brown color, 4 to 5 minutes. Add 3 cups water, the garlic, chicken bouillon, and a hefty pinch of salt. Arrange the chicken thighs on top, crispy skin-side up. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring to a simmer. Remove the pan from the heat.

4. Carefully cover the hot pan with aluminum foil, pinching around the sides to create a tight seal. Transfer to the oven and bake until most of the liquid has been absorbed, 30 to 35 minutes.

5. Meanwhile, make the dill topping: In a small bowl, stir together the dill, capers, oil, vinegar, garlic, chile flakes, and salt and black pepper to taste. Remove the foil from the chicken and bake for another 5 minutes. Preheat the broiler. Place the oven rack about 4 inches from the heating element. Broil until the chicken skin becomes crispy, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the oven. Fish out the softened garlic cloves and crush them on top of the crispy chicken thighs. Dollop the dill topping all over the hot chicken couscous and serve right away.

Let me be blunt: I rarely invest in new skincare. I’ve had the same routine since I was in my teens. But now that I’m older, my skin is in dire need of a refresh. Why I love the Aeonia Age Defying Serum…

• Brightening effects. I applied this serum right after washing my face every day, twice a day, for about three weeks. I noticed a slight glow immediately after applying every. single. time. I also noticed that it greatly improved the look of dark spots and dullness just like it claimed. Point Delavie Sciences.  

• Lightweight feel.  The other thing I noticed almost immediately was how lightweight the serum is. I could barely feel it on my face after rubbing it in. Plus, in a surprising turn of events, I realized it also helped my makeup stay on a little longer throughout the day. 

• Scent. Normally I get nervous when skincare has too much perfume or scented ingredients in it for fear of irritating my skin. But this serum smelled amazing without causing any burning or breakouts. 

• Easy application. One of my favorite things about this serum is the dropper that comes with it. It releases just the right amount of serum you need to cover your entire face without having excess left over.

Why I love the Aeonia Sculpting Cream…

• Softening effects. While I noticed how soft my skin was after just one day, I noticed a huge difference after three weeks. This stuff works. With consistent use, my skin was smoother and way more hydrated than it has ever been.  

• Thick consistency. With this cream, a little goes a long way. You really don’t need too much of it to enjoy its benefits. It has a heavier consistency, which made it a little harder to wear under my makeup. However, it does mean that it’ll last longer. Bonus points for the little scooper tool that’s included, which gives you the perfect amount of product every time.

That’s why we were especially excited to attend the Joining BeyForces Creator Brunch hosted by Olympic gold medalist and mom of three Shawn Johnson East. The event gave us first hand insight into the reality of serious RSV lung infections from moms like Shawn, and expert guidance from Dr. Mona Amin, board-certified pediatrician and social media educator. Here’s what we learned.

1. RSV is Common, but It Doesn’t Always Manifest the Same Way

RSV is the leading cause of infant hospitalizations. While most babies only experience mild cold-like symptoms, babies are 16 times more likely to be hospitalized with RSV than with the flu. Hospitalization is uncommon, but it can be hard to predict which cases will become serious, which makes prevention even more critical.

2. RSV Symptoms Can Escalate Quickly

In the first two days, your baby may not show any signs of illness. By days 3, 4, or 5, symptoms like congestion, a runny nose, and irritability may appear. But it’s between days 6 and 8 that RSV can progress quickly. The virus can move into the lungs, causing more serious symptoms like rapid breathing and wheezing. 

Serious symptoms require extra care. Though hospitalization is uncommon, babies who are hospitalized typically need support for breathing and hydration, which is why it’s so crucial to diligently monitor the progression of RSV.

3. RSV Prevention for Infants Has Evolved

Until 2023, the only preventative option for RSV was for babies at high-risk for developing serious RSV lung infection. Produced by scientists after decades of research, Beyfortus® (nirsevimab-alip) 50mg and 100mg Injection is designed to give babies an extra layer of protection against serious RSV lung infection. 

Beyfortus is a prescription medication used to help prevent a serious lung infection caused by RSV in newborns and babies under 1 year of age born during or entering their first RSV season, and in certain children up to 24 months of age who remain at risk of serious RSV lung infection through their second RSV season. Your child should not take Beyfortus if your child has a history of serious allergic reactions to nirsevimab-alip or any of the ingredients in Beyfortus. Babies can get Beyfortus before they leave the hospital, or at a regular check-up along with routine immunizations. Beyfortus may not protect all children. 4. Shawn Johnson East’s Family Was Affected by RSV

Shawn Johnson East knows firsthand how serious RSV can be — her son Jett was hospitalized with it. So, when her third child, Barrett (aka Bear), was born in the middle of RSV season, she and her husband decided to take action to help protect him against serious RSV lung infection. They spoke with their healthcare provider about their options at Bear’s first wellness visit, which included Beyfortus®, an FDA-approved, American Academy of Pediatrics-recommended immunization that helps protect against serious RSV lung infections. Before opting for Beyfortus, they talked about the common side effects such as rash and pain, swelling, or hardness at the site of your child’s injection. Shawn shared that for her and her husband, Beyfortus was the right decision for Bear because it provided him an extra layer of protection against RSV.

5. RSV Spreads Easily — Especially Among Babies

RSV is highly contagious and can spread through droplets from sneezes and coughs, and your baby can catch it by just touching contaminated surfaces. When those virus droplets land on toys or hands, they can easily get into your baby’s eyes, nose, or mouth. RSV often spreads from family members or siblings who pick it up at work, school, or daycare, making it difficult for families to avoid it entirely.  

6. RSV Is Typically Seasonal, but in Some Places, Its Impact Is Felt All Year Long 

RSV typically peaks in the fall and winter, meaning this is the time of year when babies are most at risk. However, peak season varies by location, so it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider to learn when you should take action to prevent RSV.

7. RSV Can Lead to Bronchiolitis and Pneumonia, Even in Babies Born Full Term and Healthy

RSV doesn’t always stop at the sniffles. In serious cases, it can lead to lung infections that can cause breathing difficulties, like bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lungs) or pneumonia. All babies, including those born at full term and healthy, and those born premature, are at risk.

8. COVID, Flu, and RSV Are Similar — but for Babies, RSV Stands out

RSV is unique among these common respiratory illnesses in how it affects babies' lungs. Wheezing is a telltale sign of infection caused by RSV. If you notice your baby making a whistling sound while breathing, it could be an indication that RSV has progressed — and that’s your cue to reach out to your pediatrician.

9. Parenting Takes a Village, Especially to Help Navigate Sicknesses

Parenthood may feel overwhelming at times, especially when a baby is sick, and connecting with families who have had similar experiences may help provide a sense of empowerment. Dr. Natalie Barnett, Vice President of Clinical Research at Nanit, shared that when it comes to making family decisions, “It’s about doing what feels right for you and turning to your circle — those you really trust and lean on — for guidance and support.”

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Your child should not take Beyfortus if your child has a history of serious allergic reactions to nirsevimab-alip or any of the ingredients in Beyfortus. Before your child receives Beyfortus, tell your healthcare provider about all of your child’s medical conditions, including if your child:

• has ever had a reaction to Beyfortus.

• has bleeding or bruising problems. If your child has a problem with bleeding or bruises easily, an injection could cause a problem.

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines your child takes, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Your infant should not receive a medicine called palivizumab if they have already received Beyfortus in the same RSV season.

Serious allergic reactions have happened with Beyfortus. Get medical help right away if your child has any of the following signs or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction:

• swelling of the face, mouth, or tongue

• difficulty swallowing or breathing

• unresponsiveness

• bluish color of skin, lips, or under fingernails

• muscle weakness

• severe rash, hives, or itching

The most common side effects of Beyfortus include rash and pain, swelling, or hardness at the site of your child’s injection. These are not all the possible side effects of Beyfortus. Call your healthcare provider if you have questions about side effects.

Alice: Thinking about that experimentation, sampling different areas of the business and understanding what I was good at, what I was passionate about – when those two things come together, I think it really creates success for you and for the firm that you work for…It's sort of the way I moved through that time period. Then, I didn't put a timeline on things. I wasn't saying, “within this period of time, I need to do X.” I just said, “I need to focus on this and to be successful, I need to put in the work.”

On How She’s Become Less of a Perfectionist

Alice: Being in the industry that I'm in, we tend to be a lot of type A people, right? Perfectionists, really focused, driven, getting things done. I would say there was a period of time where I really  focused on saying, “is this the most important thing in life?” We're all sitting around this room spending two hours potentially wordsmithing one sentence that's going to go in a brochure. In the scheme of things, is that really something to die on the sword for?  

On Hiring Teams with Diverse Skillsets

Alice: Don't hire a bunch of people that are exactly like you. Hire people who are complementary and different to you that have the strengths that you don't, so that the collective group makes a powerhouse team. And then don't be afraid to let them shine. If we're going to be in a presentation that's going to go deep into all of the financials, I'm going to bring my finance teammate with me and let them take it. I'll add the strategic insights. And so I think that element of being confident enough to have a great team around you, people who are better than you in certain areas, allowing them to shine, and taking that moment makes everybody better. And it doesn't take away from you. It actually makes you more successful because people start to recognize one: she's somebody who can collaborate and work with others, and two: the people who are working with you want to do it and want to do it more because you're giving them the credit for the things that they do.

Acute pain, defined as pain that lasts less than three months, usually comes on suddenly and can impact everyday routines. While approximately 80 million adults in the U.S. are prescribed medication each year to help manage acute pain, the effectiveness of current treatment options leaves some unsatisfied. 

To better understand the current acute pain management landscape, Vertex Pharmaceuticals surveyed 501 adult women and 500 adult men and people of other genders in the U.S. who were treated and prescribed medication for moderate-to-severe acute pain in the last year. Overwhelmingly, patients surveyed reported that acute pain disrupted their daily life — with a higher proportion of women reporting certain disruptions than the overall group. The results also revealed real concerns patients have about their treatment options. 

How Acute Pain Becomes a Daily Disruption

Even though it’s temporary, acute pain can throw life off balance. Many women reported that it made routine daily tasks such as exercising, participating in hobbies or sleeping feel difficult. 

More Disturbing Truths About Acute Pain

On top of the daily life disruptions reported, a higher proportion of surveyed women (59%) compared to surveyed men and people of other genders (41%) reported they don’t even visit the doctor until pain becomes unbearable — meaning, more women may be suffering with their pain for a longer period of time.

Why Additional Pain Management Solutions Are Needed

Acute pain can affect quality of life in a number of ways — and though there are effective treatments out there, the options are complicated. Opioids, for example, are a common treatment for severe acute pain, but their potential to become addictive makes patients wary. In fact, half of the patients in the survey reported they were concerned about the risk of addiction, and over half of all women surveyed wished there were more medication options to treat their acute pain.

Whether they’re for playing in the snow or just trekking to school and activities, snow boots are a must if you get regular bad weather. Baby mittens, socks, and hats are notoriously hard to keep track of — or just keep on at all. These unisex fleece booties are easy to fasten in place around the ankle, making it less likely they’ll slip off in the stroller (although we can’t promise you won’t still lose them in the wash). For kids in toddler sizes 11-13 or youth sizes 1-5, these adorable sherpa-lined booties are the perfect lounge slipper. They’re cushioned, with grips on the bottom, and come in four different wintry colors. Best of all, you can machine wash and dry them, too. ($35, Bombas)

These cushioned socks are made of 63% merino wool, and designed to keep kids warm whether they’re skiing, sledding, or just making snow angels in the yard. Since they go over the calf, there’s no danger of them slipping down inside boots like regular socks. ($21, Smartwool)

Not what you’ll reach for when the kids are planning an epic snowball fight — but perfect for any winter special occasions, holiday-related or not. Why I Love the Titanium Always Pan® Pro…

• Non-stickiness. When I say this pan makes your food glide, I mean it gliiiiides. This pan is nonstick (and remains nonstick) no matter what temperature you cook at or what you use to clean it. Even after cooking sticky ground beef, the pan looked good as new with just one wipe with my Scrub Daddy sponge.

How I Tested...

I put the T3 Aire 360 Ceramic Air Styler to the ultimate test: making my hair look shiny, voluminous, and professionally blown out in under 15 minutes before I hosted my annual White Elephant holiday party. I used it on my towel-dried hair and took notes on its ease of use, effectiveness, and of course, my “before” and “after” looks. 

Test Results...

• Ease of use. If you know me, you know that I hate reading instructions. So I tend to go for products that are self-explanatory. This styler comes with a small booklet that shows you how to use the left and right rollers and round brush attachments, but much to my (gleeful) surprise, you don’t need it. The styler itself has four buttons total: a power switch, a lock switch (for the attachments), a temperature gauge, and an airflow gauge. There are helpful LED lights that turn on to indicate power levels and everything is clearly labeled. 

• Lightweight. One of the first things I noticed was how light this styler felt in my hand. It made my old round brush styler feel way heavier by comparison, which is surprising because this styler is almost twice its length. My arm never felt tired even though I was wrangling my post-shower hair. 

• Speed. Truthfully, it took me longer to set up my Christmas tree or bake 25 rolls of pizza dough (thanks, Pinterest) than it did to get a salon-level blowout. After my shower, I towel-dried my hair for about five minutes before going to town. All in all, it took me 12 minutes to complete my blowout. I used a claw clip to help section off my hair and brushed through all of my hair with ease. It also helped that my arm never got tired, so I didn’t have to take any breaks throughout.  

• Hair texture. This is how you know this styler is worth it. My hair was bouncy with a capital B. I had zero (yes, zero) flyaways and my hair stayed smooth and silky throughout the entire night…and into the next day. I also got compliments on how shiny it looked 24 hours after styling and was told my layers “have never looked better.” If you’re looking a tool that will make it easy to *toss-toss* your hair à la Galinda the Good, this is it.

Sidenotes...

• All-inclusive kit. This Air Styler Blowout kit comes with everything you need — and I mean, everything. The box includes a leather vegan tote with individual compartments for each of the styler’s attachments. You also get two ceramic 1.35-inch curling barrels, a roundbrush, a SoftAire® drying concentrator (aka, a regular blow dryer), and the styler itself. The leather tote not only keeps everything organized, it also secures tightly with a drawstring close which makes me excited to travel with it for the first time.

Over the last six weeks, I’ve put my hard copies (and old Kindle Paperwhite) aside and read exclusively with both Kindle’s 12th Generation Paperwhite and brand-new Colorsoft e-readers. I traveled with them, noting how much space they took up in my bag and their weight. I also tested out reading in different settings, from direct sunlight to total darkness. I paid close attention to battery life, swiftness of page turning, any glitching, and new shiny settings. As always, it’s important for me to consider if these new launches are simply buzzy or are actually worth their high prices.

Test Results…

• Kindle 12th Generation Paperwhite:  I’ve spoken extensively about my love for the Kindle Paperwhite. Its anti-glare screen and simple settings mean you can read anywhere. However, I found that over time the battery life of the 11th Generation Paperwhite started to deplete quickly and that page turns were glitchy and slow. The biggest difference with this 2024 12th Generation release is that the battery life is incredible (I only had to charge it about 1-2 times in my six weeks of testing), and the display is noticeably larger at 7 inches. For the battery life alone, I’m happy about the upgrade. At $160+ (depending on if you go ad-free or not), it’s definitely pricier, but if you’re new to the Kindle world and want to try a basic, no-frills model, go for this one.

• Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition: This is the model that all the BookTokers and Bookstagrammers hyped up before it came out. ICYMI: Kindles are typically black and white, and don’t include any color, which makes reading children’s books, graphic novels, travel books, and cookbooks a lesser experience on an e-reader. Colorsoft is Amazon’s way of trying to create a better reading experience for books that come to life with color. This e-reader is ideal for students because you can color-code any highlights. While you can make your current book your Kindle screensaver on both, on the Colorsoft, it felt like you were having more of an authentic hard-copy reading experience in a high-tech, yet compact way.

Sidenotes…

• Kindle 12th Generation Paperwhite: At 16 GB, the storage on the new Paperwhite is the exact same as the 11th Generation. Another big upgrade: The Paperwhite is waterproof, so you can read in the bath, pool, or on the beach without worrying about water damage. Ultimately, I think any average reader should go for the Paperwhite. The price is manageable, the battery life is fantastic, and its simple settings make it easy to use and take on the go. My only con is that it isn't as slim as the 11th Generation Paperwhite, but it still fits into most of my bags. If you’re new to e-readers, this is the one to start with. I recommend buying it on sale — either during Prime Day or during any other major sale period.

• Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition: Is this a need? Absolutely not. I found that even though I am book-obsessed, I was still reaching more often for my Paperwhite. But the color features make using it feel extra-satisfying and did leave me smiling. That isn’t a reason to spend nearly $280 on an e-reader (even with 32 GB of storage), although I do think the Colorsoft would make a wonderful gift — with some notable caveats (see below).

• During my testing, the Internet was buzzing about a software glitch that created a yellow bar along the Colorsoft’s display. Customers were understandably upset over paying such a high price for a glitch like that to happen, which is why the delivery time for the Colorsoft is currently three to five weeks. Over the first three weeks of usage, mine did not have said yellow bar, but eventually it developed. Amazon is currently working on the display issue.

• Lastly, I did test the Colorsoft while cooking, and I found that I didn’t really love getting messy with such an expensive piece of technology nearby. Maybe using a clicker would solve that problem.

Connie: I had always known that I had an unfiltered mouth. I thought it was effective because it threw the guys off. Here I was, a little lotus blossom, and they thought I was demure and quiet. I would throw a bomb at them before they threw one at me. So it was sort of like throwing them off kilter. And they didn't really know what to say, they were left speechless. And I loved the fact that they were left speechless.

On the Difficulty of Standing Up For Herself

Connie: I really tried to tell them…don't lay it all on my shoulders just because the men don't want to do it doesn't mean that you can press me to do it. I couldn't convince them. I just could not. They would say things like, “take it for the team.” I really took male figures deep in my soul and obeyed them. And I think that comes from being Chinese. My father requiring me to do X, Y, or Z. And my mother, same thing. And I think that it's just being that dutiful Chinese daughter, still infiltrated my professional life. And I regret it, not being tougher and telling them “no” the way the men did. 

On Finally Embracing Her Success

Connie: I never could declare success. I don't know why. I couldn't embrace it. I couldn't get my arms around it. But as soon as I learned about this “Connie Generation”, it sort of hit me between the eyes and made me realize I must have had an impact. My husband, Maury, who truly has been my consigliere from the beginning, has always said, “you're Jackie Robinson of news”. And I'd go, “No, Maury.” And he's gotten so frustrated over the years telling me I need to embrace what he thinks I created. And it wasn't until Connie came along that I realized, you know, he was right. And I thought, “you're right for the first time in your life.”

Personally, I use it as an opportunity to throw a little sparkle, a whole lot of velvet, and an ounce of too-muchness into the mix to usher in the new year. Dinner Date

If you have a dinner date with your girls, your partner, or your family, you’ll want to make sure you’re comfy enough to last through dessert. I’m so here for the velvet revival — you’ll notice a lot of it on this list — not least because the fabric is so cozy. But this dress has all the elements to make it a little sexy, too, like a deep V-neck and buttons up the front. ($230, Anthropologie)

There’s nothing better than serving a standout look just to go to your favorite restaurant. This hot pink blazer fits the bill, especially if you pair it with the matching pants. The shawl collar gives this a classic vibe, but the color is anything but stuffy. Plus, you don't need to wear a top underneath. ($298, Universal Standard)

There’s something about a sweater dress that always makes me feel effortlessly put-together like Cameron Diaz in The Holiday (my style icon). This one is a simple silhouette with a body-skimming fit and buttons up the front. You can do so much with this look, whether that’s adding gold hoops with a slicked-back bun or a red lip with air-dried hair. ($278, Reformation)

Out on the Town

So you’ve decided to go out. It doesn’t matter if going out to you is one more drink after dinner or dancing at a club all night long, you need an outfit that’s meant to be seen. This midi dress is the ticket, especially in the festive wine color. With its sheer underlay and slit up the back, you’ll be serving “I just threw this on but I still look chic” energy. Wield it. ($110 Abercrombie & Fitch)

I just bought this dress, and while I didn’t think much of it on the hanger, the fit is a dream. It’s swingy in all the right places, which will let me dance if I so choose, but it doesn’t look shapeless. The sequins offer just the right amount of shimmer, and the long sleeves will keep me warm as I bounce from bar to bar. ($209, Nordstrom)

Yes, you read that correctly. We’ve come to my favorite category of New Year’s Eve dressing, what I like to call Doing the Most. On Getting Real with Your Co-Founder

Lizzy: If you have a surface level relationship with a friend, you probably shouldn't do it. Because you won't be able to get into the weeds and then come back from it. Jess and I literally have had tears-streaming-down-our-face arguments in parking lots, in bathrooms, and we've gotten past it because when we have something that's with each other, I don't like carrying it on. I’m like, “Let’s attack it. Let's figure it out.” If we are best friends, if we are sisters, then we get past everything. There's nothing that can come between us.  

On Why Becoming a Mom Made Her More Ambitious

Jessica: The first years of building [my] company were very fulfilling. And I think the misconception is that once you become a mother, you lose ambition, or you lose drive, or you lose creativity or desire to be in the world. I really felt like I thrived. I found my purpose in a different way. I found my power in a different way. And I was thinking about legacy differently than I ever did prior to. I was never more ambitious, but in a purpose driven way. It was different. It wasn't just about career milestones. It wasn't about that…I think just that shift in purpose and why I'm here, why we're all here and what I could possibly pass down to my kids and the example I want to set for them. 

On The Impact of Losing Her Mom

Lizzy: There are two moments in my life now that I realized have really shifted who I am: giving birth, becoming a mother for the first time and losing my own mother. When I gave birth, it was this new found purpose, creativity and power. You don't realize what you're capable of, right? It's almost like it's right under the surface. And then that moment you become a mother, you're like, Whoa, I am capable of all of this. I can multitask, I have the power to do this and I am driven. You feel like you've almost exploded in a way. And that's how I felt. But losing my mom was interesting because I didn't realize how much it would affect my life. You don't have this endless amount of time. Time is very, very important and you have to make sure that you are using your time not only wisely, but intentionally. And so for me, it gave me a newfound perspective, with business and with family. You really have to be very in-tune with who you are and you have to be very intentional about where you spend your time and time matters.

Katlyn knew something wasn’t right. And she wasn’t alone — approximately one in eight women in the US report experiencing symptoms of postpartum depression (PPD) after giving birth. PPD is different from the “baby blues,” with longer-lasting symptoms that can be serious if not treated.

After confiding in her OB/GYN and receiving a diagnosis of PPD, Katlyn enrolled in a clinical trial for a PPD treatment called zuranolone. Zuranolone has since been approved as ZURZUVAE^® (zuranolone) CIV, the first and only FDA-approved oral treatment for adults with postpartum depression. It is not known if ZURZUVAE is safe and effective in children. We spoke to Katlyn about her experience with PPD, navigating new motherhood, and how treatment helped her feel more like herself again.

What is Postpartum Depression Really Like?

For Katlyn, PPD felt like an overwhelming loss of motivation and interest in her hobbies and other activities, coupled with the fear that she wasn’t a good mother. "When I had experienced depression before my pregnancy, I struggled with feeling like I wasn't good enough. With PPD, that feeling was multiplied by a thousand," she recalled. 

PPD can cause a number of symptoms, and each woman can experience it differently. Some of the more common symptoms include:

• Depressed mood lasting longer than two weeks

• Loss of interest in hobbies and activities you used to love

• Changes in sleep

• Changes in appetite or weight

• Decreased energy or fatigue

• Feelings of guilt or worthlessness

• Difficulty concentrating

• Feeling restless or having trouble sitting still; or thinking and moving more slowly than usual

• Thoughts about death, suicide, or harming oneself or the baby

If you're thinking about suicide, call the confidential National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 24/7 at 988. If you’re having a medical emergency, call 911. If you fear for your safety or the safety of your child, get help immediately. If you are experiencing any of these or other symptoms, talk to your healthcare provider right away.

Despite being one of the most common medical conditions associated with pregnancy, PPD continues to be underdiagnosed and undertreated. 

How Katlyn Found the Right Treatment for Her PPD

Katlyn tried talking to her sister, who had been through PPD herself. “But talking to my sister alone wasn’t getting me anywhere,” she shared. “I knew I needed to do something about how I was feeling.” Talking to a healthcare provider (who might be your OB/GYN, midwife, nurse, or a mental health professional) is an important first step in the journey to getting help. Only a medical professional can diagnose PPD or help determine if you are experiencing PPD or something else.

At her six-week checkup, Katlyn told her OB/GYN about how she was feeling and was diagnosed with PPD. But the treatment she was prescribed didn’t work for her. "I wasn’t suicidal, but I had these intrusive thoughts, like ‘what if I just wasn’t here anymore?’ And that scared me."

It wasn’t until she saw an ad for a PPD medication trial that she realized there might be another way. "I was willing to try anything, even if there was just a slim chance that it would help me feel more like myself again,” Katlyn explained. 

Within three days of starting the treatment, she felt a difference. “I couldn’t believe it. I woke up one morning and actually felt rested. I wanted to shower, go outside, do something — anything.”

ZURZUVAE 50 mg was studied in women whose PPD symptoms started in the third trimester or within 4 weeks of delivery in a 6-week trial. During the trial, patients took either ZURZUVAE or placebo for 14 days, and were followed up for another 4 weeks. Significantly greater PPD symptom improvement was demonstrated at Day 3, Day 15 (the primary endpoint), and Day 45 compared to placebo, using a standard depression rating scale.

Katlyn's story reflects her personal experience with ZURZUVAE. Individual results may vary and it is important to talk to your doctor about the benefit-risk profile. 

ZURZUVAE may cause additional serious side effects including decreased awareness and alertness [central nervous system (CNS) depressant effects]. 

ZURZUVAE may cause sleepiness, drowsiness, slow thinking, dizziness, confusion, and trouble walking.

• Because of these symptoms, you may be at a higher risk for falls during treatment with ZURZUVAE

• Taking alcohol, other medicines that cause CNS depressant effects, or opioids while taking ZURZUVAE can make these symptoms worse and may also cause trouble breathing

• Tell your healthcare provider if you develop any of these symptoms, or if they get worse during treatment with ZURZUVAE. Your healthcare provider may decrease your dose or stop ZURZUVAE treatment if you develop these symptoms

What Katlyn Wants New Mothers to Know About PPD

Today, Katlyn wants to help other moms get the help they need and deserve postpartum. She believes advocating for herself helped her get better, and encourages all women to do the same by being informed about their options. 

“Medication might help, so don’t be afraid to ask for what you believe you need. There are lots of people willing to help and a lot of women who have gone through the same thing,” she advises.

ZURZUVAE is a federal controlled substance (C-IV) because it contains zuranolone, which can be abused or lead to dependence. Keep ZURZUVAE in a safe place to protect it from theft. Do not sell or give away ZURZUVAE, because it may harm others and is against the law.

Before taking ZURZUVAE, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you:

• drink alcohol

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. ZURZUVAE and some medicines may interact with each other and cause serious side effects. ZURZUVAE may affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines may affect the way ZURZUVAE works. 

Especially tell your healthcare provider if you take antidepressants, opioids, or CNS depressants such as benzodiazepines. 

What should I avoid while taking ZURZUVAE?

• Do not drive a car, operate machinery, or do other dangerous activities until at least 12 hours after taking each dose of ZURZUVAE because ZURZUVAE may make you feel sleepy, confused, or dizzy

• Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any new or sudden changes in mood, behavior, thoughts, or feelings

• Keep all follow-up visits with your healthcare provider as scheduled. Call your healthcare provider between visits as needed, especially if you have concerns about symptoms

Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms, especially if they are new, worse, or worry you:

• attempts to commit suicide

• thoughts about suicide or dying

• new or worse depression

• feeling very agitated or restless

• trouble sleeping (insomnia)

• new or worse anxiety

• panic attacks

• acting aggressive, being angry, or violent

• an extreme increase in activity and talking (mania)

• acting on dangerous impulses

• other unusual changes in behavior or mood

This is the perfect fall coat. It's got a hood, deep pockets, and adjustable cuffs. When this cleanser launched, our whole team tested it and loved it. While I had it in my possession, I hung back from trying it right away, knowing that throwing a new product in the mix could spell disaster for my sensitive skin. But then my all-time favorite cleanser was discontinued (is there anything worse?) and I was forced to consider my options, namely the Dieux box sitting under my counter. Naturally I checked the ingredients before trying and was pleased with the short list, including glycerin for hydration and betaine to fortify the skin barrier. I love this cleanser full stop. It applies like a soothing gel at first, then when splashed with water, turns into a foamy lather that makes me want to wash my face for the entire 60 seconds. It never makes my skin feel tight or stripped — and Charlotte Palermino, the innovator that she is, made it in both fragranced and fragrance-free options. Strapsicle has been one of my favorite product finds of the year, and if you’re attached to your e-reader like I am, you need this. It's two silicone straps that criss-cross over the back of your e-reader. Slide your hand under the straps so you can hold onto your e-reader for hours without getting hand cramps. There are so many Kindle accessories out there, but I love how affordable and unfussy this accessory is. I was due for a laser hair removal touchup, but I wasn’t ready to drop thousands of dollars for it. Instead, I took a shot on this relatively inexpensive at-home IPL device, and I’ve been so surprised by the results. The brand notes that it takes at least eight weeks with twice-a-week treatments to see results, but I actually saw a major reduction in hair thickness and growth in about two. Most importantly, it doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin — any redness goes down in about an hour — and it’s not nearly as painful as a professional laser, since you can adjust the intensity to suit your tolerance. I love layering my moisturizers and fragrances after a hot shower. It's such a treat for me, especially during the chilly season. Arlow wines checked all my boxes. The cabernet, rose, and sauvignon varietals all taste exactly like regular wine, but after two (fine, three) glasses, I still felt alert. Saucy noods are reliably a balm to my soul at the end of a long, crappy day. I keep an absurd number of different kinds of noodles on hand at all times, and I especially love spaghetti for its ability to swing into a dish with Italian or Asian flavors. You don’t typically think of pasta as a great meal-prep option, but this dish truly gets better and better as it sits in the fridge for a day or two absorbing the sauce, so don’t be afraid to make it if you’re only cooking for one or two people.

• Kosher salt

• 1 pound spaghetti (or any long noodle)

• 1 medium yellow onion

• 1 (2-inch) piece fresh ginger

• 4 garlic cloves

• 4 tablespoons sesame oil

• 1 pound shaved beef (or 1 pound sirloin or rib eye steak, sliced as thinly as possible)

• 1 (10-ounce) bag shredded carrots

• ⅓ cup low-sodium soy sauce

• 1/4 cup rice vinegar 2 tablespoons tahini

• 2 tablespoons sriracha, sambal oelek, or gochujang

• 1 ½ tablespoons honey

• 1 tablespoon fish sauce

• Toppings (optional): chopped fresh cilantro and/or basil, sesame seeds, chopped peanuts, more sriracha

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to the package instructions. Scoop out 1 cup of the pasta cooking water, then drain the pasta and return it to the pot.

2. Meanwhile, thinly slice the onion. Grate the ginger (no need to peel it first) and garlic.

3. Warm 2 tablespoons of the sesame oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. When it shimmers, add the sliced onion and cook, stirring often, until softened, about 4 minutes. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons sesame oil, then when it shimmers, add the beef, peeling apart the pieces, the carrots, and the ginger and garlic, and cook, stirring often, until the steak is almost cooked through but still slightly pink in the center, 3 to 4 minutes. Scooch everything over to one side of the skillet.

4. To the empty side of the skillet, add ½ cup of the cooking water, the soy sauce, vinegar, tahini, sriracha, honey, and fish sauce. Stir it all together until combined, then stir it together with the beef and carrots. Cook until the sauce thickens a bit, another minute.

5. Transfer everything from the skillet into the pot with the pasta and stir to coat. Add more splashes of cooking water as needed—the sauce should be glossy and stick to the noodles. Taste and add salt if needed.

6. Divide among bowls and serve with any toppings that make you happy.

TIP: You don’t always have to dirty up a separate bowl to make your sauce. Just dump all of the sauce ingredients straight into the center of the skillet and stir together as best you can. No worries if it’s not totally homogeneous; it’ll all come together in the end.

I struggled with sensitive, acne-prone skin and the endless cycle of makeup making my skin break out more. What’s your current favorite lip combo?

Tips for our readers who want their makeup to actually last all day?

I like to build my base in thin layers and blend each one down before moving to the next one. I start with Plump & Juicy Spray-On Serum and pat that into my skin. Then, I blend in DreamBeam SPF 40 PA++++ in Sunlit, which also has a priming effect. Next, I start with a very small amount of Revealer Foundation and only apply it where I need it. I start with my fingers and then I use the Revealer Blender to finish tapping it into my skin. I usually apply two very thin layers, followed by one or two thin layers of Revealer Concealer. I finish with the key step for makeup longevity, Cloud Set, which is a fine setting powder. I use a large powder brush, and I really press the powder into my skin.

What are the most underrated products from Kosas?

We have a lip balm called LipFuel that very few people know about. But the ones who know, really know.

Are there any makeup trends for 2025 that you’re loving?

Makeup doubling as skincare will continue to grow. I also see this idea of having a good relationship with your beauty routine continuing. It’s an intentional time in my day, and it’s a way I express and take care of myself.

Name an unexpected makeup hack you turn to often.

Learn your face. If you take the time to deeply understand the structure of your face, not only will you learn to appreciate all of your intricacies, but you will be able to go into autopilot each time you do your makeup — which can serve as a self-loving meditation.

How I Tested…

I wore each brand’s perfumes in a few different settings, from the office to evenings out. I took note of how long each scent lasted, how it layered with others, and whether it lived up to the brand’s promises. Since fragrance can be subjective, I paid attention to how the scents fared in different contexts — and, of course, how many compliments I got.

Test Results...

• Scent Lab: With an arguably Gen-Z aesthetic and the lowest price tags of the three brands I tested, Scent Lab’s fragrances blended a subtle complexity with wearability. They lasted on my skin from morning well into the evenings, and their very reasonable price points enabled me to layer a few. I loved Pistachio Dream’s fresh-from-the-bakery almond-vanilla notes. I also liked layering Cheeky Rose — a not grandmother-y, fresh floral — with Smokey Haze, a smoldering, ambery tobacco scent. 

• by/rosiejane: by/rosiejane feels like Scent Lab’s millennial clean-girl older sister. I first thought of these as “everyday” scents, however I found myself getting more hooked on this brand over time. Everything from the brand somehow smelled both familiar and exciting. Rosie, a straightforward rose-musk, and Leila Lou, a grown-up pear with jasmine notes, both reminded me of the soapy smell of freshly-washed hair. Dylan, a cedar-frankincense musk, made my roommate come out of her room to ask what smelled so good after I applied it. 

• DedCool: There’s a striking individuality to all of DedCool’s fragrances. On the first spray, Fragrance 01 “Taunt” reminded me of the first scent I ever purchased for myself — Bath and Body Works’ Warm Vanilla Sugar — but it settled into something far more mature and interesting with notes of amber and bergamot. Fragrance 03 “Blonde” and Madonna Lilly both had an electric sharpness to them, the former leathery and almost fruity, with notes of juniper, violet, and raspberry, and the latter floral and peppery, with sandalwood and cardamom.

The brand that makes our favorite Five Minute Journal also makes a productivity planner so you can mindfully set and accomplish your goals. It’s divided into two parts to make things easy. The first lets you rank your daily tasks, express gratitude, reflect through guided prompts, track your habits and moods, and time block your day. The second leaves space for you to write down any extra notes or do a quick journaling session. How can I prevent burnout if I can’t change much about my job?

Use positive reframing

This exercise acknowledges your very real circumstances and also finds a positive aspect. Try to “yes, and” your thoughts to change your perspective. For example, if your boss asks you to complete a project and later scraps it altogether, your “yes, and” could be: “My boss acts like a cat chasing a laser, and I’m getting paid to work on that meaningless project, getting me closer to funding my next vacation.” 

Set boundaries

Setting boundaries doesn’t mean you say “no” to everything — it’s about saying “no” to the things that drain you so that you can say “yes” to the things that energize you. For example, if you get asked to join a committee at work that brings you no additional value and takes away from your actual work, you can say: “Thank you so much for thinking of me. Right now, I don’t have the capacity to participate, and the committee deserves someone who can support its goals with full focus and energy.”

Take breaks

Breaks help you get out of the heightened state of awareness, or the “fight-or-flight” response. Stand up, stretch, look at something other than your computer, drink some water, and remember that you are not your job. If you have the flexibility, you could do a 20-minute yoga class in your living room, go for a walk around the block, or meet up with your coworker at a cafe for a change of scenery.

Create space

Carving out some personal space can help prevent feeling depleted or exhausted. Use visual cues to let people know you need a little distance. For example, you can tell coworkers that when the earbuds are in, you can be interrupted, but once the over-ear noise-canceling headphones are on, they should pretend you’re not even there. 

Get professional help

Talking to a therapist can help you understand why you’re burned out, where you can make changes, and what you want from your next role so you can avoid ending up in a similar situation again.

Right before I moved in May, I did a major kitchen clean-out and took inventory of the tools and products that I can’t live without. So I’m rounding up all the things that make being in the kitchen easier, and in turn make me a better home chef. I’m including everything from tools and small appliances to accessories that keep me clean and organized (with minimal effort). These finds are all under $200 and will go a long way.

I tested this squeegee along with some other OXO products last year. If I had to pick a winner of the bunch, it would be this. If you don’t have a garbage disposal, this makes scraping off food residue before you wash your dishes mess-free. It even has curved, grippy edges so you can maneuver it to hit hard-to-reach places. My mom (who hates chopping pretty much anything) put me onto this small appliance also from OXO. You can add onions, carrots, celery, nuts, or anything small you want to chop. When you press on the top, its covered blade will rotate in different directions creating a perfect chop every time. Everything is collected neatly in its catcher cup. The best part: It’s dishwasher-safe, so you don’t have to worry about cleaning the crevices out by hand. ($22.99, OXO)

I bought this bowl from Material on a whim and it’s become a fast favorite in my kitchen. It’s made of recycled plastic so it has a grippy texture that won’t scratch or stain. There’s something about the texture as well that makes mixing ingredients easier. It won’t slip around on your countertop, and is dishwasher- and microwave-safe. It comes in so many bright colors, you can serve out of it, too. ($20, Material)

Shopping for knives is intimidating, especially if you’re new to developing knife skills (like me). This 8-inch knife from Material is made of a durable Japanese steel and I use it at least once a day. The handle is slightly weighted, which I love because it allows for more control. Buy it on its own or as a part of this magnetic knife block bundle. ($79+, Material)

This set of knives is inexpensive and wonderful for beginners. You can get a set of four for under $30. I use them for chopping smaller veggies and fruit. During the pandemic, I used these knives to help me safely develop my chopping skills. They’re sharp, yet lightweight and small for maximum control. There’s no better feeling than actually using up every grocery you bought. These silicone food huggers cover the cut side of produce to keep them fresh. I love these because I typically do not need a whole plastic bag for cut produce and these are a simple solution. Use them for all kinds of halves, including lemons and avocados. What frustrates me about other expensive Dutch oven brands is that they’re so heavy you tend to reach for them less. While Our Place’s Always Pan has been endlessly hyped, I’m here to say that I think their star product is the Perfect Pot. It’s shockingly lightweight. I love its nonstick coating and the fact that it can go from the stove to the oven. Making soup has never been easier. ($105, Our Place)

When I’m considering what to keep in my apartment kitchen, I always look for small products that’ll serve multiple purposes. This sheet pan from Our Place is my latest obsession. I use it for baking cookies and sheet cakes, roasting veggies, as a vehicle for transporting food to our grill, and as a nonstick griddle for pancakes. It does everything, while still being so compact. ($55, Our Place)

I bought this in May as a way for me to make matcha lattes and hot chocolate at home. My trick: Sifting the matcha powder and milk directly into the top of the frother for a creamy at-home latte. I do the same thing for hot chocolate and I’m constantly impressed by the outcome. You can pick from three temperatures and froth levels. I also love that the pitcher part is waterproof so I don’t have to worry about water damage when I’m hand washing it. My boyfriend loves it for coffee, too. ({{dynamicPrice}}, Amazon)

This airtight set has made meal prep and actually finishing our leftovers a breeze. The tops and bases all stack together in our cabinets, so we aren’t left to dig around to find a match. I love that the lids have a clear window, so we know exactly what we’re grabbing out of the fridge. They’re also dishwasher-, freezer-, and microwave-safe and all nestle together in our fridge. I’ve been a fan of Hedley & Bennett aprons for a long time. They’re durable, easy to wash, come in countless colors, and I love their spacious pockets for holding utensils while I cook. The one I have is made of a soft denim and it’s held up well after multiple splashes, stains, and uses. ($80.75, Hedley & Bennet)

Here to confirm that Ninja blenders are definitely worth their internet buzz. This one has a 72-ounce capacity, so I can use it for blending soups without worrying about spillage. After blending, I throw everything in the dishwasher to clean. ({{dynamicPrice}}, Amazon)

Forget having to cut and maneuver parchment paper into place. These pre-cut sheets from Reynolds allow you to pull and place a sheet in seconds. They lay flat and won’t curl up along the sides. I use lemon-scented pearls on a weekly basis to keep my kitchen smelling fresh. Run your garbage disposal to clean out any remnant food scraps. It's not "doom spending." It's redefining the dream.

Prices are up. Student loan relief is likely off the table. And Social Security may not exist by the time millennials retire. With such a bleak financial outlook, you would think people would be stashing their cash in preparation for the Great Depression 2.0. But, if you believe the headlines, American society is collectively leaning into something dubbed “doom spending” — aka leaning into the “little treat” economy as a way to combat anxiety.

Pause for a second. The condemnations of this trend feels suspiciously similar to the latte-shaming of the 2010’s—this tired idea that we were sabotaging our golden years with every cappuccino we ordered. Yes, some millennials and Gen Zers are less than optimistic about their financial futures, now that buying a home is harder and saving for retirement can feel like climbing Everest. And maybe in response some are spending money they might once have saved. But does having a higher spend/save ratio mean they are giving up or being irresponsible? What if they are intentionally adapting their financial habits to a landscape that looks nothing like we were told to prepare for?

What does that look like? Gen Z is building careers with an eye on a different kind of retirement, while Millennials save for “adult gap years.” Neither generation is giving up on financial security; they’re balancing spending and saving so that they don’t forgo experiences they may not have again. For them, splurging on those suede booties or booking that weekend getaway doesn’t feel like a moral failing. A sustainable financial mindset isn’t about perfection; it’s about making a budget that allows you to live well now and later.

Q: My husband’s parents are well off and really generous. They’ve contributed to our children’s 529 plans and often cover expenses during joint family vacations. Is it ever acceptable to ask about how they’ll allocate their money after they pass? I know it’s morbid, but knowing this could help us plan for the future, too.

You should absolutely discuss end-of-life and estate plans with his parents. Too many families feel uncomfortable talking about death and money. Still, you don’t want to come across as greedy, so avoid diving straight in with, "Hey, what's the plan for your money after you die?" Instead, focus early conversations on questions like: "Do you have preferences for end-of-life medical directives?" and "Have you thought about your will and estate plan?" Prepare yourself for resistance to these topics. Not everyone is comfortable thinking about their own mortality. Continue gently asking, and emphasize that your motive isn’t the money itself, but to better understand their wishes. (Related: The Great Wealth Transfer: Faucet or Fire Hose?)

One note of caution: I fully support planning for an inheritance, but I never advise planning on an inheritance. Even if your husband's parents are worth $10 million, and they say it's all going to your family, you shouldn't stop saving and planning for your future. Nothing is guaranteed. Much like plantains, I wish I could put mangoes in every recipe. Make these blondies and you’ll see what I mean. Seriously: Drop what you’re doing and start making these right now if you can, since simply explaining how the fruit’s signature gooeyness complements the rich notes of butter and caramel, or how it all just melts on the tongue, is never going to beat the pure comfort of eating one. Frozen mango and fresh ripe mango work equally well here. It’s your call on this one.

MANGO JAM

• 3 mangoes, pitted, peeled, and diced (450 g), or 16 ounces (450 g) frozen diced mango

• 1 1/2 cups (300 g) granulated sugar

• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

• Juice of 1 lemon

• 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

BLONDIE BATTER

• 3/4 cup (170 g) Browned Butter (page 277), melted and cooled slightly

• 3/4 cup lightly packed (150 g) light brown sugar

• 1/4 cup (50 g) granulated sugar

• 3 large eggs

• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

• 3/4 cup (105 g) all-purpose flour

• 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt

• 1 teaspoon baking powder

• ¼ teaspoon citric acid

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper.

2. MAKE THE MANGO JAM: In a large saucepan, combine the mango, sugar, and salt and cook over medium heat until the mango is softened, about 10 minutes. Transfer the mango pieces to a blender, leaving the syrup in the pan. Cook the syrup until thick, about 5 minutes more.

3. Remove from the heat.

4. Puree the mango chunks in the blender, adding as much of the syrup as you need to achieve a consistency like thick baby food. Add the lemon juice and blend for 1 minute. Add the flour and blend for 1 minute more.

5. MAKE THE BLONDIE BATT ER: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the browned butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar on medium-low speed until aerated and paler in color, 4 to 5 minutes. With the mixer on medium-low speed, add the eggs one at a time, mixing until evenly combined and scraping down the sides and bottom of the bowl after each addition. Add the vanilla and mix to incorporate.

6. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, and citric acid to combine. Add the dry ingredients to the mixer bowl with the wet ingredients and pulse the mixer on and off, almost like you’re trying to jump-start a car, so the flour gets gradually incorporated without flying all over your kitchen.

7. When the dry ingredients are mostly combined, mix on low for about 2 minutes, until the flour is no longer visible.

8. Pour half the blondie batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly with an offset spatula or the back of a spoon. Spread the mango jam over the batter in an even layer, reserving a small amount for garnish.

9. Pour the remaining blondie batter on top of the mango jam and spread it evenly. It will be a bit difficult, but move slowly and with intention!

10. Add the last bit of mango jam on top of the batter and swirl with a wooden skewer.

11. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes, until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let stand until cool to the touch before cutting into 10 bars. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for a couple of days — that is, if you don’t eat them all in one sitting . . . I won’t judge.

You’ve spoken openly about your experience with grief. How did it inspire you to start Spoonful of Comfort, and what advice do you have for our readers who are experiencing grief during the holiday season?

I am always the first to say that grief is incredibly personal. In 2007, my mother was suddenly diagnosed with cancer. Because my children were small and I lived thousands of miles away, I wasn’t able to be there in person all the time. I wanted to let her know how much I cared about her and that I was thinking of her, but none of the gifts I found felt as personal as I wanted them to be. Sending soup to comfort people was one of the ways I processed the sudden passing of my mom. I started creating care packages with soup and delivering them to people who needed comfort. That effort has grown into what Spoonful of Comfort is today.

When it comes to grief during the holidays, I’ve found that you never know what you’re going to get. There are so many traditions that emotions can pop up unexpectedly. When those moments come, I see them as a gift. Happy or sad, they’re an opportunity to think about that person and remember them.

A few products you turn to to keep your mental health in check?

I love to surround myself with bright spots. Good sheets. A diffuser and oils. My powder room has wallpaper with Benjamin Franklin blowing bubble gum. Setting out a fun paper napkin for a regular meal makes me smile. Little things that bring everyday moments of joy help to adjust my mindset.
