| Selvedge |
From traditional warm woollies to avant-garde techniques, Selvedge’s September/October issue explores the many ways to create knitted and knotted textiles. Marvel at the colourful crochet playgrounds of Japanese artist Toshiko Horiuchi MacAdam, admire the ageless appeal of Catherine Andre’s knit collections and, as the V&A announce their forthcoming Alexander McQueen retrospective, Savage Beauty, Selvedge looks at tartan as symbol, stereotype and fashion staple. With a focus on knit, it felt natural to head to Scotland but Selvedge bypasses the mainland to meet textile designers who inhabit some of the hundreds of beautiful offshore islands. |

We have a hunch that you like paper and stationery as much as beautiful yarn and pretty fabrics
Issue 44 of Mollie Makes puts paper crafts under the spotlight. An it’s-so-easy honeycomb tissue pompom DIY takes centre stage on this month’s cover, while inside you’ll find three bookbinding tutorials with marbled, leather and embroidered covers, as well as a Tea and a Chat withThe Papered Parlour. Other projects include crochet fruit paperweights (and trusty desk buddies), a his’n’hers knitted cowl pattern, easy-sew felt succulents and sweet embroidered cloud pillows from the newMollie MakesEmbroidery book. There’s also this month’s wishlist and current trend obsession, jungle wildlife, where more craft projects await. Sweet! |

Rachel has developed a soft spot for hats; this week she has finished this adorable Camp Hoodie Swatch Hat in Berocco Ultra Alpaca, topped with a fabulous multihued mega-pompom! Another of our regulars, Claudia brought in two finished crochet projects to show us this week. She has framed the pretty colours of Kibou in creamy white Canopy Fingering to create a Coco Cowl that’s perfect for early spring. The hint of sparkle in our Julien silk gives Claudia’s eponymous scarf a touch of summery glamour. Julia combined our Canopy Fingering with yarn from her stash in this lovely shawl, the result of theCurious Collective 2014 design- and knit-a-long. To keep her son’s violin teacher’s hands toasty when she’s playing, Anita has whipped up a pair of Et Frais fingerless mitts. The textured stitch pattern not only provides a warmer fabric, but is also great for highlighting the slight colour variation of Sweet Georgia Tough Love Sock. Anita fell for Suvi Simola’s Fold & Turn when it was first released and, despite our lack of a real winter, immediately cast on in a gorgeous neutral shade of Cascade 220 Superwash. It’s perfect for throwing on over a slouchy tee and boyfriend jeans for just a little extra warmth in the shop’s air conditioning. With the prospect of a beachside Christmas this year, Anita has started her planning early. Her starfish, worked in Pierrot Cotton Neat, are the beginning of a beach-themed Christmas garland in turquoise, lime & ivory. Hang on, what’s that Grandma Tree doing in there??
Last week, however, I decided it was just the right weight for this time of year when the middle of the days are glorious but the early mornings and late afternoons are still a tad chilly. I was thrilled to have it off the needles and on the blocking boards yesterday. I have used our Fibre Company Canopy Fingering in Orchid and Parakeet, and opted to add a more relaxed rolled stocking stitch band instead of the ribbed band and matching cuffs stipulated in the pattern. |

Sometimes it is all about the small things – as much as we love receiving massive shipments of yarn, we also take great pleasure in the smaller, handpicked items that make our knitting & crochet more enjoyable or add that perfect finishing touch. This week we have lots of those small delights to share with you – from our favourite needles and maybe just the right button, through to our favourite stitch markers and some special new ones! |
| Addi |
Another top-up from Addi has just arrived, filling some gaps we had in our Addi Turbo fixed range and adding more of the fast-selling Addi Sock Rocket Lace needles.
| Biggan | |
Our weekly delivery from Biggan Design arrived on Sunday in a glorious burst of colour!
| GEMS | |
It looks as though you all can’t get enough of our GEMS stitch markers! So many sizes and colours were out of stock, including everyone’s favourite, the mixed colour tins. Thankfully new stock has just arrived! |
| Buttons | |
A much-needed delivery of buttons has hit the shelves, plus I couldn’t help adding some gorgeous new styles. Here is a small taste of the new stock…

| Stitch Markers |
Through the store we have been lucky to meet an amazing range of creative makers, artists and talented people. One of these is Lu from Wild About Yarn. In addition to being a keen crocheter, Lu has a background in lampwork / glass blowing. On one of her visits to the store she was telling me about some very special stitch markers she had been making after several of her friends had been touched by breast cancer. Feeling the need to do something to show she cared, she created these extra special Guardian Angel Stitch Markers with handmade lampwork beads. These markers are not only great for knitting but also for attaching to your bag or keyring, and make a wonderful gift for that someone special who needs a little looking after. In addition to the Guardian Angel markers we also have a selection of fun marker sets including Owls, Skulls, Foxes, Ladybirds and Butterflies. Each set of stitch markers is unique and contains a selection of markers featuring some fun knitting words and pretty beads in addition to Lu’s handblown glass beads. While the markers will technically fit up to a 10mm needle, we feel they are more comfortable up to an 8mm size. |
| Yarn Packs |
So often we welcome new yarns to the store, but today we are saying goodbye to a summer favourite – Berroco Linsey. Unfortunately the supplier has decided to discontinue Linsey, so the stock we have is the last we will be able to get. Last year, Rachel usedLinsey to whip up one of my favourite projects, a Solid Granny Square Bottom Bag. We all loved it so much that we have put together a selection of Yarn Packs of our favourite colour combinations. |

We’re thrilled to see that there has already been a lot of interest in our Springtime KAL / CAL! There has been a lot of chatter online and in-store, with suggestions and project planning aplenty. We have a pretty relaxed approach to -alongs here at Tangled Yarns. We want to make sure that anyone who wants to can join us, without worrying that the chosen pattern is not quite their thing or exceeds their comfort level, or that they are going to be rushed to finish in time (most of us here are working mums, so we know how hard it can be to squeeze time in for our passion!) So simply pick a springtime cardi or top that takes your fancy, choose a yarn and cast on! You can, of course, use stash yarn but only projects that use yarn purchased at Tangled Yarns will be eligible for the prize draw on completion of the KAL / CAL. We’ve started a thread in our Rav group for participants to discuss their intended projects and possible yarns / yarn substitutions, and to share WIP pictures. All of us here at TY will be popping in regularly, and will do our best to answer any questions you might have. Some of our regulars have already been active on the thread and via email, with a few more fantastic suggestions for springtime projects: Touch the Sky by Elena Nodel {knit} Whispers by Veera Välimäki {knit} Hitofude Cardigan by Hiroko Fukatsu {knit} Flowery See-through V-neck by RichMore Designs {crochet} … a hint of summer by Isabel Kraemer {knit} Summer Haze by Simone Kereit {knit}
(Seems like a bit of a knit bias there – we’ll be anxious to see what crochet projects pop up in the thread!!) Officially the KAL / CAL starts on 1 September and will run throughout Spring, but you can join us at any time. Those participants who finish and post a photo of their FO in our Rav thread before midnight on 30 November will go into the running (via random number generator) for a fabulous magazine pack. |

Few things are more gorgeous than the transition from summer to Pom Pom issue 10 reflects the spectacular colours of autumn, while paying homage to the folk traditions that inspire us every day. This issue features nine patterns including three sweaters, a shawl, scarf, mittens, cowl and socks. |
| Clover | |
We were delighted when our latest shipment from Clover arrived, not only because we desperately needed a top-up of our existing stock, but also because it contained the new, larger sized Amour Crochet hooks! Now available in sizes from 6.50mm – 10.00mm with fluoro-coloured handles. As with the regular sized Clover Amour Crochet hooks, the handle is made from elastomer rubber, making crocheting extra comfortable. However these larger sizes have a plastic hook to keep the overall weight down. |

Surprisingly, I have been reasonably monogamous and have been almost exclusively knitting one project this month, Benton by Julie Hoover in Berroco Ultra Alpaca Fine. The Berroco Ultra Alpaca Fine was lovely to work with and the fabric is light, loose and lovely to wear – even with the weather starting to warm up.
Derrin has been busily knitting socks, finishing two lovely pairs in our Crazy Zauberball. First up, a pair of her own design and secondly a pair of Very Vanilla Socks.

In spite of winter’s last fierce gasp, we’ve been dreaming of spring – beginning to order our lighter weight cottons, browsing spring-inspired patterns and digging out some WIPs that have been languishing in our knitting baskets since the temperatures dropped. There have been requests through our Ravelry Group and in store for another KAL / CAL. As we’re very fond of a lightweight cardi to throw on over our summer dresses or a pretty top to go over linen pants, we thought that might be a good project for a Tangled Yarns Spring KAL / CAL. We’ve put together a few pattern suggestions that have caught our eyes over the past weeks and months, but we’d love you to email us with any others you might have noticed. We’ll publish your suggestions next week. | Brown Sheep | |
Although we find our Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece is a popular choice all year round, it is certainly an even stronger favourite as it starts to warm up. With the 80% cotton / 20% wool composition and extensive colour collection, it is a great transition yarn. | On the Needles at Tangled Yarns |

Maureen has been making the most of the cold and dreary weather over the past few days, finishing two of her winter projects which I’m sure will keep her warm when she heads to Europe in November! First up is Winter Trails hat by Alana Dakos in our Berroco Ultra Alpaca. Smitten by her first, she turned out another Simple Sprinkles, also in Berroco Ultra Alpaca. It is such a great pattern, and nice and cosy in this yarn, not to mention a great stash buster. Maureen has used several Ultra Alpaca leftovers from her previous projects. Kim has just finished another stunning shawl, You’re Beautiful in Ella Rae Lace Merino. I can’t wait until our next colourful shipment of Ella Rae Lace Merino hits the store; it is such a lovely yarn to work with and a great weight for the coming seasons. After seeing all of the amazing shawls that Kim knits, her son requested something for him. These socks are in our Zauberball and the pattern is Derrin’s, Learn to Knit Socks Class Project. After a few false starts with the cast on (loooooong cast on, laceweight yarn….eek!), Liz won the battle and finished this beautiful Baya by Mindy Wilkes in Sweet Georgia Tough Love Sock and Cashsilk Lace. Also off the needles for Liz (another of her holiday trip finished projects) is the bright and zingy Ashburn by Melanie Berg. Anita fell in love with Armande when she first saw it and thought it was a perfect match for the sunny yellow Ultra Alpaca that she’d been eyeing. It’s finally come together as a lovely slouchy cardi, just perfect for these final days of winter.

Take a break this weekend with the latest copy of The Simple Things. What most of us want is a holiday we remember – that secret cove we had to ourselves on a sunny day, the simple salads we rustled up for lunch, the holiday home we wished was ours. The little things stay with us too; that brilliant pair of flip-flops we wore every day, having the time to watch a bee gather nectar or a spider weave a web. |

| Mollie Makes |
Issue 43 of Mollie Makes has arrived in all its groovy glory! Topping the craft chart this month while keeping our desks spick and span are The Mollies. Plug in to their making melodies and whip up our brand new trends projects including watermelon heels and party pineapple stirrers. Our pick of the props is Debee Ruiz’s yarn tassels, so versatile we’ve found four ways to spruce up everything from photographs to gift wrapping with ’em. More yarn projects include the crochet fedora, chuck-it-all-in crochet clutch and crochet cherries. We also meet expert weaver, Maryanne Moodie who tells us more about her yarn of choice and the creative process behind her woven wall hangings. While swooning over the breathtaking textures, try the technique and upcycle your chair with a woven seat by April Rhodes. Other projects include: a quilted board game, hand-printed pennant flags, and leather luggage tags for your summer adventures.

August is always a funny time of year in Brisbane with the promise of a season change in the air. Even though it has been warmer this week, we will no doubt have that final cold snap accompanied by the blustery winds, just in time for the Ekka next week. As winter draws to an end, we are super busy behind the scenes organising the season change at Tangled Yarns – ordering new spring yarns plus planning a new round of classes and workshops. The shop has been buzzing this week! We have had a mixture of classes, workshops, shopping, knitting, crochet plus we were lucky enough to have a visit from two lovely designers – Helen Stewart from Curious Handmade and Deanne Ramsay from Addydae Designs. |

They are all finally off the needles and Little Set of Dots is now available via Ravelry!

Rachel has been loving our Fibre Company yarns. Her latest masterpiece is this gorgeous Pei, worked in two shades of Acadia. Liz used her recent road trip to whip up a couple of Loani Prior’s wonderfully colourful tea cosies – a Tibetan Tea Warrior in a combination of Kibou and Cascade 220 Superwash Worsted…

The other day I saw blossom on a jacaranda – a sure sign that spring is in the air. And while I felt a tingle of anticipation for all the lovely lightweight springtime knitting and crocheting to come, there was also a twinge of disappointment that this year’s winter has been so brief. Surely it’s not only me who is still hoping for a few cold days during August? More and more, my thoughts are turning to which yarns to stock for the spring and summer months. From this month, we’ll start pulling back on ordering our heavier weight yarns in preparation for our spring stock, so now’s the time to stock up if you still have some cold-weather knitting and crocheting planned! |

| Enchanted Knits |

Enchanted Knits will charm every knitter with 27 magical projects inspired by your favourite fairy tales. Ordinary in the Extraordinary:Anyone can be enchanted by an encounter with magic – an innocent child, a noble passerby, a daring knitter. Sinister:A spine-tingling tale, a scaly creature, a jealous interloper – the stuff of sleepless nights. The Classics:Stories passed down through the ages, as familiar as old friends (or fears), honed like knitting needles.

| Selvedge |
This issue of Selvedge tells a tale of colourful, patterned textiles. We visit Mexico where the rebozo represents both function and beauty. With British Folk Art coming to Tate Britain, we find out how this type of art stretches traditional definitions and offers new types of creativity. Our articles on Peggy Angus, and Lesley Jackson’s survey of the history of block printing, show how fresh and modern patterns from the 50s still look. And for stories of folk-inspired fashion, turn to the work of Stella Jean and Susanne Bisovsky whose glorious collections draw on a diverse ranges of people and places.

We are fast approaching the end of July, with the traditional wild winter winds of August yet to arrive! My needles and hooks are busy trying to squeeze out some last-minute woollies to combat the remaining weeks of winter but I must admit my mind is already starting to think about Spring. As always at Tangled Yarns, we plan our season changes with great excitement, gradually slowing the heavier weight yarn deliveries during August and beginning to launch lighter weight Spring lines over September. If you still have some wnter projects in your queue, now is the time to stock up on those yarns before they run out the door! |

There’s a lucky baby out there! Simone has used the softest Berroco Ultra Alpaca for a classic version of In Threes: A Baby Cardigan, finished with the sweetest butterfly buttons. She also knitted this lacy Welcome Baby Blanket in a lovely neutral shade of Cascade Ultra Pima. Maureen has knitted up the perfect antidote to cold hands – Part Deux Mitts in scrummy soft MillaMia. Quite a few of us were taken with Veera Välimäki’s Simple Sprinkle, but Maureen has finished hers before some of us have even cast on!! She used five shades of our Acadia to create her multidirectional stripey cowl.

Issue 25 of our favourite weekend read, The Simple Things, has just arrived. Have an adventure with impromptu picnics and nature forays. Learn how to be a more mindful cook and enjoy cake recipes from Brazil and Italian ices. Listen, can you hear the sound of summer? It’s the hum of the big old bumblebee, busy about your roses, and the hoot of the barn owl. It’s the sound of friends munching buttery sweetcorn and slurping homemade lemonade (if you can hear it above the ripples of laughter). And, if you stand very still, you’ll hear the rustle of a field of wheat and the splash of a stream tumbling about your toes. You’ll hear your own sigh of contentment. |

It’s been a busy week for finishing and we’ve got quite a variety of projects to show off! Bryn finished the cutest little Bunny Girl in a DottyDress, shown chilling out on our front table. I won’t be showing this to my girls! Apparently Bunny has a wardrobe of beautiful new dresses already on the needles… Alice finished the beautiful Messaline in soft pink MillaMia to keep her daughter warm at ballet class. She must be the sweetest little ballerina there, particularly when she teams it with adorable stripey Legwarmies in MillaMia and Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Baby, knitted by Grandma Kim.
Ros is also the first of our Mystery Knitalong participants to show off her finished Beltane Shawl, knitted in The Fibre Company’s Meadow. Seeing her finished shawl makes me even more eager to finish my own! Maureen has three projects to share with us this week! Maureen had tried using her Acadia in Granite on a different project, which hadn’t worked out. But when we got our new colour, Strawberry, inspiration hit – the two colours are a striking combination in the Quaking Aspen Shawl. With the chilly weather, a nice warm cardi always comes in handy. Maureen finished her aYellow Brick Road Cardi in a warm golden shade of Cascade 220 Worsted. But it’s the details that enchant – a lacy yoke, welted cuffs and oh, those buttons! Maureen used two colours of Malabrigo Sock from her stash in these lovely girly mitts, a test knit for designer Marlaina “Marly” Bird. We haven’t seen Carmen in a while, but she popped in last night to show us her Malou by Wollwek – simone eich in Crazy Zauberball. I also finished Looped Loop in Berroco Ultra Alpaca Light to keep my mum warm on her upcoming trip to Adelaide. |

Brrr! Someone told me that the past couple of days have been Brisbane’s coldest in several years, and I can certainly believe it. It’s been positively icy! It’s great weather for knitting and crocheting though and we have been struggling to keep the yarn on our shelves. It is flying out the door faster than we can order it. We’ll be extra happy to see some more of our yarn orders arrive next week. |

Our resident speed knitter, Maureen has finished two lovely shawls this week: White Dwarf in our supersoft MillaMia… … and the delicately beautiful Afternoon Tea by Helen Stewart. Another of our lovely customers, Robyn, brought in her BlueSand Cardigan, knitted in three beautifully coordinating shades of our versatile Cotton Fleece. It is her first adult garment, and she is justifiably proud of it.
Having spotted Fiorella in last week’s newsletter, Anita grabbed her hook and a couple of gorgeous skeins of our Organik and whipped one up for herself.
