My husband is a blond, blue eyed white man. When he walks into a store he doesn’t get followed, but attending synogogue makes him a target of white supremacists. He can be both a beneficiary and a target at the same time, it turns out.

Whatever white Jewish women decide to do wrt women’s march—and it’s a personal choice—I do hope they take this distinction is taken into consideration.

I don’t have the benefit of walking around in certain stores without getting followed + most white Jews question my Jewishness bc I’m black.

but if I’m sitting next to my husband at shul and a white supremacist decides to make a bad decision, I’m not any less vulnerable to *his* white supremacy

But I wouldn’t go to shul so in some senses I’m safer than my husband but in most others I’m wayyyyyyy less safe as a woman and as a black person.

There’s lots written about Jews “becoming white.” I read this one in college and it informed much of my thought. Please! Feel free to also read it.https://www.amazon.com/Whiteness-Different-Color-European-Immigrants/dp/0674951913 …

I did a lesson on this with my students and we found that the “whiteness” of Jews was “conditional and revocable”. There was a whole kerfluffle about Gal Gadot that led to our discussion. Being Caucasian in America is a legal category.
-
Gal Gadot freaks me out
-
Gal Gadot straight up pisses me off. I refuse to brook consumption of entertainment from anyone who can /justify/ and /have love for/ the IDF at this point. The IDF is killing journalists and medics for daring to help the Palestinians, and she supports 'em.
-
Like, I got out of the Air Force /right before/ Trump took office, but at this point, knowing the shit we do in other nations, having NIGHTMARES about some of the shit I've seen that I /can't talk about,/ I disavow 'em so hard I torched my blues and ABUs-- but she won't? Mm-mmh.

I think a big distinction people are missing is that talking about the NY Jewish person and a Jewish person from be South or Midwest. I can guarantee you that my experience in “the heartland” has been and will continue to be entirely different from you or your husband’s.
-
Actually I lived in Minnesota for 4 years!
-
Awesome! Then you can understand that there are a lot of factors that play a role in someone’s minority experience and how they pass through majority society.

This reminds me of the movie School Ties w/ Brendan Fraser & Matt Damon (among others). All that he had to do to fit in was take of his yamaka & he was 1 of "them". Black ppl don't have that advantage.
-
Such a good movie. He was in a privileged in-group in many respects, but within that in-group, he could never be one of “them”
-
I loved the line when he said something like "I'm gonna use you to get into Harvard like you used me to win football games". Man I wish more ppl had that mentality.
-
did y'all know that movie is based on the "Law & Order" creator's prep school experiences?

A very astute observation that I think about all the time. I also think that it’s wise of white Jews, particularly millennials/gen z, to remember that it was not that long ago that we were ‘distinct’ as such.
-
For me, it’s a constant reminder of 1) why we must use what privilege we have to be vigilant defenders against oppression, and 2) that this ‘distinction’ is incredibly fragile and can disappear to the will of a single white Supremacists or government
