Bellefaire JCB is adding a 5K to its 22nd annual Biathlon and Walk, starting at 8 a.m. Aug. 27, followed by a picnic at its Shaker Heights campus.

“The 5K was added because we have had some interest from people who want to do just the running portion of it,” said Beth Pollack, Bellefaire’s director of organizational advancement. “We thought that we would be responsive to that and maybe attract some new participants.”

Pollack said she expects between 300 to 400 participants, which can help generate more than $100,000 for programs and social services the agency provides.

“We really look at the annual event as having two purposes,” Pollack said. “One is to create awareness of Bellefaire and the important work we do with children and families in our communities. And second, to raise critical funds for programs’ components that may not be covered by other sources.”

Those components can include art supplies for children in the after-school program, purchasing a van for transporting children to the after-school program and to help Bellefaire provide clothing.

“But importantly, it is also an opportunity once a year for us to invite the community onto our campus and to learn a little bit more about the mission of our agency,” she said.

The Cleveland Jewish News is a media partner of the event.
