So frustrating - #AAAS wants $30 to rent a paper for a day - really? this is in the service of science? what a jokepic.twitter.com/KwfkiSbyzN

@cenewman0 Is this NSF funded research by chance? Maybe this story could help motivate them to do something about access.
@kejames Yes! That's a good idea...
@cenewman0 Presumably this teacher and her school are publicly funded. As is your research. So, she should have access. 1/2 #openaccess
@cenewman0 2/2 & NSF invests a lot in edu incl. K-12. It just doesn’t make sense their own research isn’t #openaccess for those teachers.
@kejames Hypothesis: Many think that a teacher needing a journal article is so rare that it's not worth having policy for. @cenewman0
@DoctorZen @cenewman0 Someone aught to do a study. Maybe someone has?
@kejames That said, there are arguments for it regardless of rarity. (I never like the "taxpayer" argument much.) @cenewman0
@DoctorZen @cenewman0 Yeah, me neither, but I think it might resonate with our audience here (government & bureaucrats).
@kejames @cenewman0 "If this is offensive to you..."Wow. We need to explain better that scientists actually love to share their research.
@HansZauner @cenewman0 Yes. And we need #openaccess stat. And reduced rates for educational purposes until then. And more $ for teachers.
@kejames Hard to believe the reduced rates for education thing doesn't already exist! @HansZauner
@cenewman0 @HansZauner Yay capitalism. /sarcasm
Uhhh... guess where they make their money? :|
The scientist gets nothing from the sale of the paper. Their research is funded through a variety of other channels. And no, it's not capitalism that's at fault; that provides the societal wealth that funds such research. It's the publisher's greed you should blame.
.@kejames @openscience @cenewman0 we can blame the publishers but scientists need to consider the value of open access fees.
@DrAdamGlen @openscience @cenewman0 Many don’t have th budget. Need to write into grants, but what I’d no grants, just shoestring?
.@kejames @openscience @cenewman0 @research_uk awarded £22.6 million to unis's in 2015/16 to spend on #openaccess fees. Value for money?
@DrAdamGlen @openscience @cenewman0 @research_uk Wow. Link for that figure?
Ok found it, http://www.rcuk.ac.uk/RCUK-prod/assets/documents/documents/2015-16-BlockGrantAllocation.pdf … @kejames @openscience @cenewman0 @research_uk, see total at the bottom.
@DrAdamGlen @openscience @cenewman0 @research_uk Thanks! Holy smokes.
