Jobbik hasn’t changed: The Action and Protection Foundation has Prepared its Report on anti-Semitic Hate Crimes and Incidents

Action and Protection Foundation

Action and Protection Foundation (APF) prepared its annual report in 2017. APF monitors Hungarian public events, political publicity and media on a monthly basis with the methodology based on international standards. The organization presented its study and monitoring report on the level of Antisemitism in Hungary for the fourth time in Washington DC. The event of the global Jewish advocacy platform was organized between 4–6 June of this year by the American Jewish Committee (AJC) targeted at the interest of international political and public life players.

APF analyzed, in its annual report, monthly and annual incidents of Antisemitic hate crimes and related acts. In 2016, APF identified 48 incidents of Antisemitic hate crimes, which were mostly committed in Budapest by male offenders and members of hate organizations such as Betyársereg or a group of football fans. More than three-quarters of registered hate crimes fall into the category of hate speech, whilst ten cases of vandalism were registered. In most cases, the target group of such hatred-motivated incidents was the Jew community, being an ethnic and religious group of minorities.

In 2016, the question was raised if, whether the nationalist Jobbik political party, due to its failed intention going towards populism, has been linked to less Antisemitic manifestations and social impressions. Although the political rhetoric, the choice of topics and the wording of the six main leaders of the party slightly changed compared to the recent period, it is clear that Antisemitism is still one of Jobbik’s characteristics. It is not only about isolated cases, the manifestation of the President of the party shows these kinds of signs too.
