As we conclude a year in Baltimore that has been filled with heartache, sadness and loss. The death of Freddie Gray and the upcoming trial of those in whose custody he lost his life has forced our community, indeed our country, to grapple with the consequences of structural and overt racism.
Selichot (prayers seeking forgiveness) are traditionally said Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah (this year, observed on September 5). Selichot is a time for introspection, but it cannot be a solitary affair – each of us must also confront our place in the broader society.
To this end, Jews United for Justice is partnering with Beth Am Synagogue for prayer, study and discussion about race and responsibility. Antero Pietila, author of "Not in My Neighborhood", will join us to share important history for us to grapple with and its influence over the current state of our city and communities.
We’ll begin with Havdalah at 9:00 p.m. and conclude by 11p.m. Please come with open minds and willing hearts as we learn, examine our history, pray, and make plans for the year to come.
