Oy vey! JCC to showcase Meyerland with fun run

Lace up your sneakers, it’s time for the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC of Houston’s Oy Vey! 5K Family Fun Run. The event, held in Godwin Park in the heart of Meyerland, gives families a fun way to get active, while giving back to the community. Proceeds from the Sunday, Oct. 7, event will support the J’s Meals on Wheels.
The Oy Vey! 5K Family Fun Run comes a year after Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, inundating Godwin Park and the surrounding neighborhood with floodwaters and forcing organizers to cancel the 2017 run.
“Nearly a year later, our community is coming back to life, and it’s the perfect time to bring this event back to life, also,” said Robin Fortenberry, director of Fitness Services at the J. “With so many homes being remodeled, along with all the new construction in Meyerland, including the beginnings of the brand-new Kolter Elementary, it’s time to showcase our wonderful community.”
The event is one way the J encourages health and wellness in the community. It will include a 5K family run, plus a 1K run for kids ages 1-13, and will begin and end at Godwin Park, 5101 Rutherglenn Dr. The 5K takes runners up South Rice Avenue, then along Brays Bayou, before heading back to Godwin Park. Registration opens at 6 a.m., on race day; linup for the 1K is at 7:20 a.m., and lineup for the 5K is at 7:50 a.m.
All community members will be able to enjoy a post-race event in the park, with food, vendors and entertainment for families. Parking and shuttle service will be available at the J.
“We hope that the Oy Vey! 5K Family Fun Run will show the city of Houston that the community of Meyerland is still a viable one, with a positive future,” Fortenberry said.
The fun run was partially funded by the Houston Jewish Community Foundation and is presented by Methodist Hospital. Event proceeds support the J’s Meals on Wheels program, the only program of its kind in Houston to provide kosher and American standard meals to homebound seniors. The program serves community members over age 60, plus those who are incapacitated or disabled and unable to prepare their own meals. Recipients often are nutritionally at-risk adults living alone.
By supporting Meals on Wheels, the fun run highlights the pressing needs of the community’s homebound seniors. Proceeds will allow the J to serve those in need currently on the program’s waiting list.
