Introduction

The Summurai platform offers multiple ways to have your audio content embedded within your web assets. This guide will introduce the different ways to embed audio and provide the technical code elements you may need to do so properly.

Screenshot with the Playter audio player embedded in a blog post

Embedding the Playter© audio player in your blog posts

On the Summurai Dojo, once a Summy has been published to “Embed on blog”, your Summy should appear under the Create & manage > Embedded Summies option in the main menu.

Once you see the relevant Summy, use the “Embed” option (Notice the puzzle icon).

Within the panel that opens, use the “Playter2” option.
Set the preferences as you wish, copy the code snippet and embed it in your blog post.

Notice that the connection between your blog and its related Summy is done through the reference link in the Summy settings. In order for the Playter© player to appear, you’ll need the Reference URL to include the URL of the relevant blog post.

This method allows you to use the code snippet in your blog post template, since if no Summy is connected to a blog post, the Playter© won’t load and show on the page.

Playlist element

On the Summurai Dojo, once a Summy has been publish

Code for header:
This code should be embedded on the page scripts section under the <head> tag, to allow all Summurai functionalities:

<script type=”text/javascript” src=”https://app.summurai.com/embeddedplaylist/sdk.js“></script>
<script type=”text/javascript”>
jQuery(document).ready(function(){
SEP.init();
});
</script>

Code for the + button:

Thiscode should be used on the buttons that add the Summies (audio items) to the playlist:
Add the anchor tag around the ‘+’ element
<a class=’summurai_add_to_playlist’ data-embedid=’EMBED ID CODE’></a>

OR

You can add “summurai_add_to_playlist” class to the element and also add data-embedid=’EMBED ID CODE’ attribute.

You can get the Summy code for each item from the following section:
Main menu > Embedded Summies > Relevant Summy > “Embed” option > “Embed in blog” > Copy the “Summy id” code.

Here’s an example code you can use for one of Ophir’s Summies:
eica66c0e70ee23a73f9c70ddc05b0ec0adaa89c06

Code for the playlist open button:

This code should be used to open the playlist popup.
Add this class to the open playlist button:
summurai_playlist_open_btn

Example:
<div class=”… summurai_playlist_open_btn …”

Code to show playlist item count:

You can add the following code to show the item count
<span class=’summurai_playlist_item_count’></span>

OR

If you already have a element for it then add the following class to it: “summurai_playlist_item_count”

Content consumption is moving towards audio

Over the last few years, we see a dramatic shift in content consumption. According to DemandSage, by 2024, the number of podcast listeners will pass the 500 million bar worldwide, that’s half a billion.

Another outstanding stat by Edison Research shows that in 2023, spoken word is taking 31% of all audio time. In other words, spoken word is giving a fair fight to the music industry.

Global podcast listening chart

Adding audio to your content strategy

The obvious question we all need to ask is what we are doing with this trend.
While a large portion of companies have a podcast or plan to invest in one over the next year, if you look at the amount of content companies create, the focus is still on written content.

Content marketers keep creating more and more blog posts, white papers and eBooks and promoting newsletters. All of these focus on textual content, missing the opportunity to move into the listening time of your busy target audience.

Three lanes – video, audio and text. Video and text are full, while the audio path is empty.

The growing consumption of audio provides a opportunity to repurpose content and get more attention, traffic and time.

Repurpose your content with audio, AI and Summurai

Audio presents a much bigger opportunity for marketers. Besides that podcast you are trying to promote, what if you could turn every piece of written content created by your team into audio?

With the recent progress of AI tools in general and audio technologies specifically, we were able to build a tool that will allow turning your blog posts into audio and publishing them as podcasts with a minimal effort.

Summurai is much more than a text-to-speech engine. While other TTS generators stop only create a voice file, leaving it for you to figure out what to do with it, we designed Summurai to become your audio content management system, allowing you to create audio items, embed them in your blog and digital assets, share them with your brand identity, host them as playlists in your website, use them as lead-gen engines and track their performance.

Getting started with Summurai’s Voice Studio

As soon as you log in to the Summurai Dojo (Summurai’s admin system), go directly to the “Voice Studio” on the left menu bar. You’ll be able to add the subject and content of your blog post manually or use the “Import from blog” option on the top. It’s important to go over your text and make sure that it was imported correctly. Importing the blog content depends on the technical structure of your blog and may load some of the meta data around the blog content.

Summurai Dojo > Voice Studio screenshot

Turning your text into audio

Once your text is clear, it’s time to listen to the different voices and find the tone of voice that fits to your message. We keep on adding more voices to make sure you get as many options to choose from. When you find the right voice for you, make sure to mark it with a star. This will move it to the top of the list, to make your work easier next time. It’s time to click on “Create Summy” and get your voice ready.

Summurai Dojo > Voice Studio audio recording process

That’s it! Your Summy is ready!

The Summy is not just an audio file. It’s a combination of elements that create an optimized content experience for your audience and a great way to push your business forward, with a combination of brand identity, visual, text, audio and call-to-action.

The Summy structure – combining text, audio, visual, brand identity and CTA.

Use the “Edit” option to edit the visual and add a call-to-action button. Once you are ready to launch, use the “Share” option to get a sharable link or add this Summy to your playlist.

Summurai Dojo > Voice Studio – Ready Summy screenshot

Creating a Summurai playlist, and loading RSS to podcast platforms

Each Summurai playlist can contain multiple Summies and can be exported to an RSS file. The updating RSS is way to the podcast. In order to publish a podcast on Spotify or any other podcast platform, all you need is to provide a link to an RSS.

The challenge of creating significant content

As a marketer, you’re likely familiar with the difficulty of producing a substantial piece of content. Whether it’s an eBook, a white paper, or even just a blog post, creating something you’re proud of usually takes a considerable amount of time.

I’ve discovered a method to produce an exceptionally appealing and significant piece of content in just 30 minutes, and honestly, it’s quite mind-blowing.

It was around 10PM last night

I stepped out of the shower, feeling down about my inability to effectively promote things. It was one of those days when progress just seemed to stall, and as an entrepreneur, I was wracked with guilt. I had been eager to finalize a significant piece of content, yet it was already late for a potential buyer.

Earlier that day, a potential client had requested that I sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). He sent me a link to sign the NDA via DocuSign. Suddenly, an idea struck me. Why not create a guide for entrepreneurs on everything they need to know about NDAs?

From that moment until I had a branded audio playlist ready for the market, it took less than 30 minutes. I’ll explain how I did this, step-by-step, including recommendations for improvement.

Step 1: Use ChatGPT to Define the Structure of the Guide

To establish an initial structure for the guide, I used the following prompt:

“I’d like your assistance in creating a 4-chapter guide called ‘The Entrepreneur’s Guide to NDAs’.”

ChatGPT provided a well-structured, 4-chapter guide, detailing what each chapter should cover.

Step 2: Ask ChatGPT to Write Each Chapter

I asked ChatGPT to write each chapter, limiting each to around 400 words. The outcome was a solid starting point. It required some additional touch-ups to add more personal insights and align it with my tone of voice, but the foundation was excellent. However, there was one issue.

The text was optimized for reading, but I wanted to create an audio guide. This meant the text, as written, would sound robotic if narrated. I needed a script. So, I asked ChatGPT to revise the text for narration. Here’s the prompt I used:

“Can you please turn this chapter into a script ready for narration, removing bullets, numerators, and subtitles?”

On a side note: I’m not sure why, but I keep using “please” and thanking ChatGPT for its hard work…

Step 3: Setting Up Visuals

With the content ready, I needed visuals to accompany it. Not feeling particularly creative, I focused on efficiency. I planned to use Midjourney for the visuals and asked ChatGPT to write a brief for each chapter’s visuals. Here’s the prompt I used: “Please create a description for a visual for each chapter.”

Creating visuals based on the ChatGPT descriptions on Midjourney

The results were acceptable, though they required some manual adjustments. I moved on to Midjourney, requesting 16:9 ratio images with the following command:

“/imagine <image description> —- ar 16:9”.

Now, I had both the content and the visuals.

Step 4: Creating a Branded Audio Playlist with Summurai

This was the fun part. While I guess ChatGPT and Midjourney are widely known, Summurai is still a secret most marketers don’t know about, but I guess this is only a matter of time until markteres add Summurai to their arsenal.

The Summurai platform is a unique type of a CMS, offering to create branded audio-first playlists. They Summurai playlists are a mix of blog + podcast. They put audio on the front, allowing your content to blend into the daily habbits of your audience, but don’t send your audience to the podcast platforms. The web-based interface keeps your brand on the front and allows to place a CTA. It allows marketers to add audio to their own assets.

I started by setting up the brand settings, including the company name, logo, description, and homepage link. The next step was creating a playlist. I used ChatGPT to fine-tune the guide’s description, set the cover image, and provided the #Hex color for the brand identity. The playlist was then ready.

The Summurai playlist settings panel

Once the brand was set, I moved on to set up the 4 chapters. On Summurai, each chapter includes a visual, transcript, audio, and a call-to-action button, known as a “Summy.” For the voiceover, I visited the Voice Studio. After testing various avatars, I chose Antoni for his fluent and balanced voice, perfect for both formality and ease of listening. Recording with Antoni was the highlight of the process.

The Summurai audio creation process

Assembling all 4 items took less than 10 minutes. I added the 4 Summies to my playlist, and just like that, it was ready to be shared. Check it out for yourself.

The playlist can be hosted on the company’s website and can be either open or gated. The Summurai CMS (aka “The Dojo”) offers detailed stats to explore content consumption.

The Summurai playlist on desktop

Here’s my disclaimer once again:

I want to reiterate that this is not an official DocuSign piece of content. It’s merely a demonstration, but who knows, perhaps it will become official in the future.

The Summurai playlist outcome

When it comes to lead generation and content marketing, finding the perfect balance between engaging your audience and delivering valuable information can be a challenge. That’s why we developed our Sushi Philosophy – an art of reduction, that wraps content into a small unit that perfectly balances all the ingredients.

Just like sushi, a Summy is the ideal bite-sized branded content unit that brings together all the essential elements you need. While sushi combines rice, vegetables, and protein into a satisfying and healthy package, this article will explore how the Summy experience, inspired by the art of sushi, can revolutionize your content strategy and captivate your prospects.

So what is a Summy?
The Summy is the base unit of the Summurai solution.

This optimized unit of content experience combines branding, text, visuals, audio and call to action button. Each Summy can be used as a stand alone unit with a unique URL, or as part of a playlist combining several Summies. The playlist could be used for a curated list of separated content or can be used as chapters of a longer piece of content such as ebook, white paper or case study. Each content could be fully available or used as a gated content for lead generation or paid customers only.

The Summy draws inspiration from sushi’s philosophy of providing a complete and fulfilling customer experience. For many years text-based content has been the norm. There has been a shift in content consumption over the last few years. The Summy offers an audio alternative that increases engagement. While text can be formal and videos can feel artificial, audio has a higher chance of evoking emotions when used correctly. It can create empathy, compassion, and trust, reaching into our hearts and aligning with the tone of voice you want to associate with your brand. The audio component of the Summy allows you to infuse emotion and personality, making your content more engaging and relatable.

The Summy is giving your prospects the power of choice: While audio content takes center stage, a detailed transcript or textual version complements it, catering to those who prefer reading. Your content is accessible and enjoyable for all users in their preferred format with this inclusive approach. With the right mix of modalities, you can expand your audience, improve the engagement of your content, and ultimately increase conversion rates and marketing funnels.

By condensing the content into a concise few minute audio format, the Summy ensures that your prospects can consume it at their convenience. Unlike text and video, which require undivided attention, audio is user-friendly and allows your audience to listen while doing other tasks. Whether they are commuting, jogging, or engaged in other activities, this flexibility allows your audience to enjoy the benefits of your content while multitasking, providing them with a seamless and enjoyable experience.

Similar to how sushi pleases the palate with its visual appeal, the Summy captivates your audience through its multimedia elements. It incorporates your brand identity, featuring your logo, visuals, and colors, which increases brand awareness and recognition. Visual elements, such as images or videos, further enhance the overall experience, immersing your audience in your content.

Just like every sushi meal ends with a delightful taste that lingers, every Summy concludes with a clear call-to-action (CTA). Whether you are eating one bite of sushi, or the entire roll (as we refer to playlist), The CTA seamlessly guides your prospects to take the next steps after consuming the content, such as visiting your website, booking a demo, subscribing to a newsletter, or making a purchase. By strategically placing CTAs throughout the Summy or the playlist, you can drive conversions and effectively nurture leads, ensuring that the engagement with your brand continues beyond the initial content experience.

With our ‘Playter’ solution, your prospects can schedule your content into their daily activities, allowing them to consume it whenever and wherever they are. You’ll be surprised how many people choose to listen, read, or do both at once. Offering your audience more options increases the chances of them scheduling a demo or purchasing your services. Unlike podcasts, the always-available call-to-action button lets you drive traffic to this perfect wrapped content most efficiently and maximize your marketing funnel results.

In summary, just like sushi offers a complete and satisfying dining experience, the Summy presents a unique and engaging approach to content marketing and lead generation. This content unit encapsulates all the essential elements of your brand, creating an optimal experience for your audience that can be shared on your newsletter, your marketing automation, your sales cycle, or embedded at your website.

Inspired by sushi’s philosophy of balance and enjoyment, the Summy ensures that your prospects can enjoy the benefits of your content anytime, anywhere.

Embrace our Sushi Philosophy today to revolutionize your content strategy, maximize customer experience, and achieve your marketing goals with style and finesse.

How Content Consumption Habits Impact Your Marketing Funnel?

In the digital age, content consumption has reached unprecedented heights. With 7 million blog posts being published every day, there seems to be an endless stream of information available at our fingertips. However, the available time people have to consume this massive amount of content is limited. We are getting stimulated with great content all day long via the internet and social media. In fact, a closer look reveals that blog posts are often overlooked, given that the average time spent reading a blog post is 37 seconds.

In March 2022, the Nielsen Norman Group (N/NG) conducted research on how people read on the web. The findings were eye-opening, highlighting the fact that users rarely read content word-for-word. Instead, they engage in a process of scanning, quickly glancing at the page, and deciding whether to invest more time in reading or move on. This behavior is fueled by the vast amount of information available and the limited attention spans of modern users.

While discussing marketing lead generation strategy based on content, it is often when we face

the phenomenon, known as the “Open Tab Trap”.

This phenomenon poses a significant challenge for marketers trying to capture and retain their audience’s attention.

The real process of content consumption often begins with users discovering content through various channels such as search engines, social media platforms, or newsletters. When they stumble upon an intriguing article, white paper or ebook, they often fall into the Open Tab Trap.

They open the tab, scan the content, and decide that it is too complex or time consuming to read now, so they leave the tab open to read it later, intending to come back when they have more time or when they are in the right mindset. Unfortunately, these intentions often remain unfulfilled as the tab lingers in the browser, collecting dust.

The Open Tab Trap poses a significant problem for marketers and businesses.
Each content unit such as eBook, white paper or blog post takes lots of resources, time and money to write, design and bring visitors. Though businesses succeed in bringing prospects and customers to discover the content, customers are not necessarily consuming it.

When users leave tabs open, they become buried under a mountain of other open tabs, competing for attention. This creates a break in the marketing funnel, as users fail to progress to the desired actions, such as booking a demo, making a purchase or signing up for a newsletter. As a result, marketers end up wasting even more valuable time and resources on remarketing and retargeting efforts, trying to re-engage users who may have forgotten about their initial intent.

Fortunately, there are solutions available to help marketers navigate the Open Tab Trap and optimize their funnels. Summurai is offering a new content experience to enhance your marketing funnel leading your business for improved content engagement and conversion.

It’s time to heal your funnel!

The combination of Summurai platform, with our Playter solution addresses exactly this challenge of lost attention and helps marketers recapture their audience’s focus and complete the funnel. Summurai deliver an optimized content experience that can revolutionize your content strategy and captivate your prospects. It offers people to consume your content anytime, anywhere, in any format, to improve your business KPIs.

When you invest in great content and get great downloads but low conversions, it may not necessarily be your content. You may have hit the Open Tab Trap without knowing it.

Don’t forget – downloads are not equal to consumption. This gap can be easily filled with the combination of Summurai solutions; Summy, Playlist and Playter.

Let’s discuss Summy!
Summy is the base unit of the Summurai solution.

It is a perfect bite-size content experience unit, that combines branding, text, visuals, audio and call to action button. Each Summy can be used as a stand alone unit with a unique URL, or as part of a playlist combining several Summies. The playlist could be used for a curated list of separated content or can be used as chapters of a longer piece of content such as ebook, white paper or case study. Each content could be available publicly or used as a gated content for lead generation or paid customers only.

OK, So why is it better?

The audio alternative can increase engagement. While text-based content is usually the norm, Summurai offers your prospects the choice of listening to audio content in addition to reading a detailed transcript, accommodating those who prefer reading. Your content is accessible and enjoyable for all users in their preferred format with this inclusive approach. It is ensuring your prospects can consume it at their convenience.

Unlike text and video, which require undivided attention, audio is user-friendly and allows your audience to listen while doing other tasks. Whether they are commuting, jogging, or engaged in other activities, this flexibility allows your audience to enjoy the benefits of your content while multitasking. This way you can provide your prospects a seamless and enjoyable experience while consuming your message.

Another advantage is that audio has a higher chance of evoking emotions when used correctly. It can create empathy, compassion, and trust, reaching into our hearts and aligning with the tone of voice you want to associate with your brand. The audio component of the Summy allows you to infuse emotion and personality, making your content more engaging and relatable.

How does it help to solve the Open Tab Trap?

This is where the Summurai’s Playter solution comes to help marketers to combat the Open Tab Trap and maximize their funnel’s effectiveness.

With Playter, your customers and prospects can schedule content into their daily routine. This solution, whether gated or not, could be embedded in your marketing funnel, increasing commitment, engagement and the likelihood of your content being consumed.

The user interface empowers your customer with a set of choices, offering them the alternatives of reading or listening, as well as the option to schedule and fit the content into their daily routines (commuting, jogging, bedtime reading, etc).
The Playter supports a multi-channel customer journey and helps your audience move fluently from desktop discovery to mobile consumption. The customer and prospects can reach this fully branded web-based content from any device, no download required.

Summurai’s solutions, whether Summies, Playlists, or Playter, all include a call to action button. The CTA button ensures your customers can complete your funnel at any time, anywhere, on any device. The combination of all 3 types of solution we offer, can heal your marketing funnel and make sure your content is not left behind.

Lastly, to summarize this article, the Open Tab Trap presents a significant obstacle for marketers to capture and retain their audience’s attention and content consumption.

In order to break through the noise, skip over the Open Tab Trap, increase consumption, and reduce remarketing efforts, marketers must adapt their strategies. Summurai offers solutions that optimize content engagement and make sure marketing efforts aren’t lost in a sea of open tabs. By embracing these solutions, marketers can navigate the challenges of the digital landscape and achieve their desired goals with greater efficiency and effectiveness.

Why do we hate receiving WhatsApp voice messages, how do you make WhatsApp voice messages super effective and how you can use them in your marketing communications and customer journeys?

Let’s start with the bad part

If you connected with the statement in the title and you also hate receiving voice messages on WhatsApp, it’s a sign that you’re not that young anymore. Just like me, you too were born in a generation that was raised on the purity of reading and that was hardly exposed to audio content. How do I know that? Because when you ask teenagers or younger kids, you’ll find that they don’t hate receiving voice messages at all and that in most cases – it’s their preferred way of communication compared to texts (emojis are a nice compromise in the middle).

You grew up in an era of written content

I was born in 1978 and throughout all the years I was brought up – in elementary school, high school, during my academic studies and at work – there was always a clear expectation around me to read. Our education was based entirely on the consumption and creation of content in written format, while audio content was not at all on the agenda.

This has many expressions that we hardly notice. The first expression is that by default – we choose to write and articulate, while the younger generation will often choose to record a voice message, simply to save the need to write and articulate.

So, what’s actually so annoying in voice messages?

Although I don’t always enjoy reading, and in most cases I am “forced” to read out of lack of choice, when someone sends me a voice message on WhatsApp, my first tendency is to get angry. For me, leaving a voice message on WhatsApp is seen as an egotistical and inconsiderate act. The other person chose the most convenient way for him, recorded voice message and placed it in my lot, a bit like placing a box in my living room and demanding that I spend time opening it without telling me what’s in it and why I should invest the time and effort to open it. This is an act that does not respect my time.

This feeling indicates, among other things, a generation gap. When my 15-year-old daughter’s friends send her a voice message, and she replies with a voice message of her own – no one thinks it’s an inconsiderate act. On the contrary. They are happy that they were spared the need to formulate the text on the sending side and invest cognitive reading resources on the receiving side. They optimize their cognitive efforts and they couldn’t care less about the importance of reading.

How can you make audio content on WhatsApp get positive feedback from everyone?

There is one principle that makes the difference called “Meta Data”. If you pack your voice message in an envelope of information, the voice message will become the preferred choice for the reading generation as well.

When you receive a letter in the snail-mail, before you are required to open it and read – you usually already know what it is about. How? Thanks to the envelope and the name of the sender. The same way, if our voice message is wrapped with a title that explains what awaits you inside, along with the time required to listen, and you know what’s in it for you before pressing the play button, you can decide if the voice message is worth the attention it requires. In this way the choice to listen will turn from a compulsion to a choice of comfort.

What if I’m not comfortable listening?

In many situations – it is simply more convenient to read. If you are in the middle of a meeting, children fallen asleep, or your WhatsApp voice messages isn’t connecting to your car’s speakerphone for some reason, better to have an alternative to read (not while driving, God forbid!). In the end – it is important to let our audience choose how to consume the content instead of imposing one model.

The world is changing and so are you

Without noticing, the audio content revolution, led by the podcasts around us, is taking over us all. If three-four years ago most of the population did not know what podcasts were, then in recent years podcasts have reached the mainstream and penetrated every segment and every age of the population. Everyone learns to listen.

When Generation X or those older than it are exposed to audio content, the initial feeling is that it is strange, unfamiliar and different, but when you start to get used to it, you realize that audio content has a lot of advantages, first of all the ability to consume it without devoting full attention and during another primary activity. Unlike reading, which requires you to stop everything and devote yourself to it, the audio content opens a world of opportunities to acquire knowledge and be updated as a secondary activity.

How can companies take advantage of this opportunity?

At every opportunity to enrich your target audience, provide added value, send instructions or explanations – you should ask whether the demand from the target audience to stop everything and read would not be an excessive demand. In most cases, our users and customers do not read anything… Accurate voice content, sent to them in a WhatsApp message at the right time and in the right place – may turn out to be the most effective content you’ve ever encountered.

Five practical tips that will make a difference in the results:

Make sure that the audio content message is wrapped with the correct Meta data – a title that will explain what it is about and a length indication to show how long it will require to consume it.

The shorter the content, the more likely we will agree to devote ourselves to it.

Make sure to allow the voice content interface to be comfortable and friendly, and don’t settle for a small audio player integrated into your blog.

Take care of a written alternative, which will still allow you to read the content, in case your target audience does not feel comfortable listening (or cannot, due to accessibility considerations).

At the end of the content – take the opportunity to add an action-motivating message, and reinforce it with a visual action-motivation button, to continue the customer’s journey after listening and direct the listeners to the place where you want the customers to continue.

Need a branded audio player to support your audio content?
It’s time to turn your content into audio and make it easier to get your message.

With Summurai’s platform you’ll be able to set your branded web-based audio player in minutes, get your audio content with some outstanding text-to-speech, with your own voice or with our team of professional narrators, add your call-to-action and track what’s working for you.

Instead of going round and round, we just asked them.

“Say, what’s the most convenient way for you to get the new and awesome content we’ve created for you?”

So they answered:

51% of our survey participants said they would prefer to get our upcoming awesome content in audio, where 29% of them prefer video and 21% wanted to read. 51% is more than half of them and we asked a lot of people!

One can make many pros and cons for the case of audio, and can try to explain whether it is true for humanity or not, but in 2022 it would be impossible to argue with it.

In 2022 professionals prefer to consume their professional content aloud. Instead of read or watch, they’d rather listen.

Professionals want to get smarter on the go, rather than when they’re in front of the screen.

Because when they are in front of the computer screen – they are doing their job and when they are in front of the TV screen they see Netflix or stare at a group of people cooking, singing, dancing or just looking for a reason to quarrel with each other.

All you need to do is turn your awesome content to audio.

You already have tons of content ready for them. You’ve been creating tons of content over the last few years. All that is left is to convert your professional content to audio, to help them consume it whenever and wherever works for them.

If you need help doing so, we invite you to learn more about Playter or schedule a demo and we’ll be happy to tell you more.

It’s time for audio.

After many years of creating interactions between people and digital products in the world of UX design — seeing tremendous content overload from brands as well as content fatigue from the customer side — it’s clear to me that it’s time for something new. It’s time for audio to take its place.

No. I’m not talking about podcasts. I’m talking about a much wider concept, where audio becomes another major element we embed along the customer journey.

Audio opens the door to a new type of communication — one that is adapted to all types of devices, and which can fit into even the smallest parts of every customer’s timeline. Yet when I tell this to high-level marketers, digital managers and innovators, most of them respond with surprise.

Whenever I offer the concept of embedding audio within the customer journey, the number one comment I get is, “Audio?! Isn’t video the most effective way to push content nowadays?” It’s taken me a while to figure out the reason for this, but I think that I finally have an answer — and it all goes back to the earliest days of communication.

Evolution

Mass media started off with Johannes Gutenberg’s printing revolution back in the year 1400. It took nearly 450 years for the next medium to take shape, when German physicist Heinrich Rudolf Hertz proved the existence of electromagnetic waves and allowed for the creation of the radio. Next in line was the television, which appeared in the 1930s, offering an enhanced experienced for both our eyes and our ears.

The digital revolution was not far behind, first as text-only services, and moving to visual interfaces in 1979. Video took a while longer to appear — although internet video was already available back in 1995, it took another decade for YouTube to come along and offer online video sharing. Luckily, this came at a good time, as high-speed internet, smartphones and social media were all about to become commonplace and revolutionize the way we consume content, as well as significantly shorten our attention span.

I found out why they don’t open the door

The reason it’s so hard to realize that audio is the next big thing is that it sounds like a bit of a paradox — if we already have extensive experience with video content, it doesn’t make sense to take a step back and work on audio content.

While it’s natural to think this way, there is a simple reason why going one step back actually means taking a giant leap forward.

Video — like text-based media — requires our full attention. And in the year 2020, our full attention is way too much to ask.

The fifth disruption

Audio is the next big thing because of a simple thing that we just don’t have enough of — time.

Watching a video or reading a text means that we have to stop everything else we’re doing and concentrate on the media we’re consuming. Because of our short attention span, neither of these media has a bright future ahead of them. Audio is the only form of communication that can find its way into our heads while we are busy doing other things.

Voice is the fifth digital disruption — and yet it has only been around since 2016. If you ask digital experts what the “voice revolution” is all about, they will probably mention personal assistants and podcasting. But while both these concepts are indeed pretty innovative, most digital marketing experts don’t have much use for them. You could always start a podcast, but this will require long-term commitment and effort. If you don’t maintain the right talent, consistency and passion — your podcast will fade into oblivion pretty quickly. In addition, the ROI on podcasting is still way too vague for podcasts to be considered a valuable asset. Providing a service that integrates with personal assistants is another pretty vague idea. It sounds nice, but people who use personal assistants will be hard-pressed to make use of your content there.

This is much bigger than Alexa and podcasts

If you ask me, brands still don’t understand the real potential behind audio. It isn’t podcasting, and it isn’t integration with personal assistants. The real potential of audio is all about embedding audio within different points in time across the customer journey.

Think of all of the content your brand creates: a blog, social media posts, eBooks, whitepapers, emails, text messages… And now look at your customers’ timeline and ask yourself — at what point in their day do you expect them to dive into any of your content? Were you really expecting your audience to download and read that 15-page white-paper you produced, or open that user manual you’ve just emailed them?

Now imagine turning all this into audio. That customer who has just come across your blog post but doesn’t really want to read the entire thing — how about adding a “Send to My Phone” button to your page so that she can listen to that content later as she’s driving back home?

Consider replacing your white paper with an audio playlist, thereby allowing your customers to consume your content easily by simply hitting the ‘Play’ button on their phone. Not only will you have higher engagement, you’ll also be able to track the interaction and know exactly how engaged each customer is, allowing you to easily identify potential customers showing interest, and marking them as qualified leads.

And what about that repetitive sales pitch or after-sales instructions that your sales team has to keep repeating over and over again? What if you replaced it with an audio playlist that they could send to the customer? I’m sure your sales team would love to have more time to deal with things that actually matter.

Think of audio as a tool for keeping your team up to date. Whether it’s that product brief you want your team to hear, a message from the CEO, or a consistent way of providing your workers with audio summaries of informative online articles.

What about your blog?

Your blog posts are textual, so your audience won’t have the time to actually read them. They will discover them, browse to look at the titles and go away leaving the tab open in the best case.

Instead of that, you could give them the chance to enjoy your content later, by listening to it on the go. We call it Playter. Playter allows visitors to send the blog post to their phone and listen to it on the go.

This option helps you fit your valuable message into your customers’ busy lifestyle.

If you’d like to learn more about Playter, feel free to schedule a demo and we’ll be happy to tell you more.

How does that sound?

Blogs are all around usHave you noticed how practically every company website incorporates a company blog nowadays? Adding a blog is a cheap and effective way to touch base with your customers while keeping them both informed about and engaged in your brand’s activities. This means more customer interaction, increased website traffic and, eventually, more sales.

Sounds easy enough, so long as your blog is easily accessed, carefully curated and wisely promoted. Each of these important facets will cost money, but how much money exactly? Let’s break the costs down to get a ballpark figure.

Easy access: publishing a blog on your site
If you already have a blog incorporated into your site, then congratulations — you’ve tackled the first hurdle. If not, then this may be the first dip into your company wallet. A blog is an area of the website that needs to be updated on a regular basis, around once a week. It is important to have your blog appear on own company’s website rather than sending people to another platform.

If your website is hosted on a service such as WordPress, and you or your team can tinkle with your website in-house, then adding a blog should be straightforward and cost nothing. If not, you will want to get someone to move your entire site to WordPress and integrate a blog into it, or do it yourself if you’ve got the knowledge.

If outsourcing, figure a one time cost of around $400 for the help of a WordPress migration expert.

Blog posts: writing them the right way
The focus of your blog should be your existing customers and potential ones. For their sake, you will likely want to keep blog posts short and simple: most people are likely to scan your blog post to look for interesting keywords which will make them want to read the whole paragraph. Too much text and your readers may lose interest and move on.

Think of what your customers are interested in when deciding what to write. The best way to ascertain what your customers want to know about you is to perform a keyword search using a tool such as Google AdWords Keyword Planner. You can use it to identify the relevant keywords for your industry, and base your blog posts around them.

You may want to write the blog post yourself or in-house, or you may want to consider outsourcing it to a writer who knows how to integrate SEO optimization into it. Incorporating SEO helps drive traffic to your website, and an SEO expert will know which keywords to add using tools such as SEMrush or Google’s Keyword Planner, as well as where to place them. They will also deal with optimizing images, links and metadata — all things that search engines look for when deciding how prominently to display your blog post in search results.

Prices are all over the place for blog articles but want to make sure that your writer is fluent in the target language of your audience. After all, you don’t want to have to spend extra time or money proofreading the material or converting from metric into imperial. You’ll also want to make sure that the content is entirely original and not ripped off from somewhere else on the internet. it’s a good idea to run it through a plagiarism checker such as those offered by Grammarly or SEO Review Tools to make sure.

The cost of a blog post
Figure around $100 for a regular blog post, although different online content providers charge different rates.
For example:

Content Writers charge around $115 for a standard blog post of between 300 and 500 words

Scripted offer a range from $39 for short items of 350-450 and up to $85 for a longer format of 850-950 words.

The Content Factory will charge between $80 and $950 per item, depending on the length and the number of items ordered. This price will also include posting the content directly into your blog as well as promoting it.

Typically, any service incorporating SEO optimization will run between $500-$950.

Freelance writers can also be hired through websites such as Upwork.com and Freelancer.com, to name a couple. Prices vary tremendously but so does quality, as the more experienced a writer is, the more they tend to charge. A good index of freelancer pay rates appears in this infographic over at ClearVoice.com.

Nevertheless, talent from different countries have different pay rates that are dependent more on location than experience, so a highly experienced writer in India or the Philippines might end up being better value for money than a beginner writer from North America. Establishing freelance pay rates is a fine art, as this Quora thread explains, with many different factors taken into account. Unless your blog post is on an extremely niche topic, though, you should be able to shop around for a competitive rate.

3. Social media: sharing is caring
Getting someone to share your blog post on Facebook, LinkedIn or other social media platforms is easier said than done. The most obvious first step is to make it easy for them to do so by including share icons at the end of your blog post. Next, you should publish your blog post on your company’s own media channels, preferably with a nice enticing image attached. If you have an email list, a link to your blog post belongs there, too.

You must also be able to provide your readers with an incentive to share your blog post. Asking them nicely is a good start. Writing irresistible content is another. Nevertheless, there may come a time where you may want to enter the world of paid social media and in order to have your content pushed to people’s feeds.

Facebook’s Sponsored Stories, Twitter’s Promoted Tweets and LinkedIn’s Sponsored Updates are the backbone of the world of social media marketing. You may want to have a dedicated social media marketer either outsourced or in-house. An agency working part-time for a small business will charge between $500 and $1000 a month. If you have time to spend, you can learn the basics on your own and use a social media scheduler such as Buffer for your business. Your budget then goes down to around $100 a month.

The ads themselves will take out the biggest chunk of the budget. Factor in between $500 and $1000 a month for paid social media ads. You can decide which segment of Facebook or LinkedIn users these ads appear to, so even though paid social media may sound expensive, it may just prove indispensable.

Conclusion
Blogging for your company is an investment that pays off. It’s definitely possible to do everything yourself and rely on organic sharing to get your content read, but a quicker and more popular way is to outsource the job to professional copywriters and social media marketers who can produce your content and share it via paid social media. It may sound cliché, but everyone else is doing it.
