What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We have been working on Factorio for over 4 years. The game is very stable and is highly optimised for prolonged gameplay and creating huge factories. We have sold over 110,000 copies on our website, and we feel now is the right time to release to a wider audience.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Our plans for release come as part of an ongoing process, and we are constantly adding new features and content. When we feel the game is complete we will release the full version, and our current estimate is that this will take 8-12 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“In the full version we hope to have a polished GUI, a multiplayer matching server, integration of mods for players and servers, and a number of other finishing touches and additions to the core gameplay.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game has a very strong content base, rich with interesting mechanics and features. Many players report they are still having fun on their maps even after hundreds of hours of gameplay, alongside multiplayer support, and a dedicated modding community.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price may be increased upon release from early access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community is a vital part of our development process. We announce any planned features far in advance so we have time to read peoples' opinions and comments, and for us to discuss the different points of view players may have. Community suggested ideas are commonly brought up in team discussions, and we value highly the input each individual player can have.”

Friday facts #153 - 0.13 Stable, 0.14 Experimental

Hello,
Albert is back this week, and has resumed his work on the liquid wagon and associated accessories, as well as offering his guidance to some visual related programming tasks. Kuba and Honza are also both back from their respective holidays, and overall the office is feeling much more full than last week.

0.13 Stable
This week we have declared 0.13.18 as the stable release, which means that any steam users on 0.12 will be automatically updated, as well as standalone version users being prompted to upgrade. From the first 0.13 experimental release there have been some hiccups with the administration and support side. Most of these arise from now requiring a login to access the matching server and mod portal, with interactions between steam and our website being a big source of problems. Since release about 2 months ago, I have answered over 800 support emails, but with a lot of work done to streamline our systems by Tomas and Martin, the recent weeks have been significantly quieter.

Apart from those issues, we've had strong and consistent success is fixing as many bugs as we can, be these small bugs, from the capitalisation of technologies, to big ones, like terrain generation issues. We've also had some time to add a few new features during stabilization, mostly scripting and modding requests, along with other changes to some mechanics. Community feedback has been really valuable to us once again, so thank you all.

0.14 Experimental
Early this afternoon we released version 0.14.0 into experimental testing. This is a small 'major' update, as opposed to the huge major update that was 0.13. You may have heard in a recent Friday facts about the huge multiplayer rewrite Kovarex was undertaking, and at last his work in complete, at only the cost of his sanity.

On Wednesday there was a big test of this new system and seems to work pretty well, I bet that we made a new record by having 67 players in one map at the same time.

You can see the new systems at work, with gameplay uninterrupted while people join, the progress bars for map downloading and catching up, as well as the smooth performance even with a large number of players. We consider this a pretty big success, and feel it is worth it now to release it for testing by the community.

So if you're feeling brave, and want to help us out, you can try the new update by selecting it in the steam betas tab, or by enabling experimental updates in the standalone game. If you are just playing in the relaxed solitude of singleplayer, then 0.14 won't feel that much different to 0.13, but might be a good opportunity to test out a collaborative factory. If you do find any bugs, please report them on the bug forum, but make sure to check nobody has reported your bug already, by checking the confirmed bugs and resolved bugs subforums.

If all the reshuffling of the planned features has you somewhat unsure of whats going on, you can check out the updated roadmap.

Vehicle equipment grid support
Another feature of 0.14 is support for equipment grids in vehicles. Initially none of the base game vehicles have equipment grids, but the hardest part is already done: making them work in vehicles.

Vehicles that have equipment grids can use all of the current equipment; tanks can go faster, have shields, provide night vision to any players in them and so on. The only equipment that doesn't function "fully" is the roboport equipment in Locomotives and only because the locomotive has no inventory to store robots or items.

Cars, Tanks, and Cargo wagons all work fully with the roboport equipment. By default cargo wagons won't deploy robots while the train is in automatic mode and not in station or while under manual control while moving (this can be toggled if that's desired). When a vehicle with a non-empty equipment grid is picked up it retains the equipment so you don't need to re-insert it all when built again. No doubt modders will go crazy with all the new possibilities, which will help us test and bugfix any potential issues.

From the start equipment grids were designed to do far more than they do in armor. With 0.12 came the addition of the Personal roboport equipment, but other than that they haven't had any significant changes or additions. There may be additional equipment modules coming in the future, but for now we are unsure of what functionality they could provide, so we'd like to hear your ideas.

As always, if you have any comments, suggestions, critiques or otherwise, please let us know on our forums.

About This Game

Factorio is a game in which you build and maintain factories. You will be mining resources, researching technologies, building infrastructure, automating production and fighting enemies. In the beginning you will find yourself chopping trees, mining ores and crafting mechanical arms and transport belts by hand, but in short time you can become an industrial powerhouse, with huge solar fields, oil refining and cracking, manufacture and deployment of construction and logistic robots, all for your resource needs. However this heavy exploitation of the planet's resources does not sit nicely with the locals, so you will have to be prepared to defend yourself and your machine empire.

Join forces with other players in cooperative Multiplayer, create huge factories, collaborate and delegate tasks between you and your friends. Add mods to increase your enjoyment, from small tweak and helper mods to complete game overhauls, Factorio's ground-up Modding support has allowed content creators from around the world to design interesting and innovative features. While the core gameplay is in the form of the freeplay scenario, there are a range of interesting challenges in the form of the Scenario pack, available as free DLC. If you don't find any maps or scenarios you enjoy, you can create your own with the in-game Map Editor, place down entities, enemies, and terrain in any way you like, and even add your own custom script to make for interesting gameplay.

Discount Disclaimer: We don't have any plans to take part in a sale or to reduce the price for the foreseeable future.

To me this is the greatest game since I discovered Civilization I in 1991. And it sucks up playtime like Civ 1.
If you're into Minecraft's industrialization mods (buildcraft, industrialcraft, ...) then I recommend to give Factorio a try. I've found it to be very stable and bugfree.

The game, as it is, is very complete and fun, but not without warts: Some aspects, like oil and liquid handling, feel a bit incomplete, others are a bit frustrating (the limited storage space of chests, no big warehouse, the pipe system is infuriatingly simplistic, the 3rd dimension was never given any consideration, ...).

Really really fun, frustrating at the start when your trying to figur out your layouts. the more play throughs you do the better the game gets. i played a fair bit and still not learnt about the logistic robots. But i know it will be fun when i get to a point where from the begining you see where your factory will be from the start and where you will build out to.

Linux steam version for some reason doesn't run well on my ubuntu, but non-steam version works just fine.

Despite this little incovenience is Factorio well worth its price. It's my most played game since Minecraft and I didn't even start multiplayer yet.

So this is what I recommend you to do: click that ‘Add to Cart’ button. You won't regret that decision.

Bonus point: Developers are, unlike many (looking at you EA, Ubisoft and Hello Games), really honest and fair people (just look at that price, just look at that ‘Download Demo’ button, just look at their communication with fans). They deserve to be supported.

"Limit time playing Factorio
For some players it is difficult to stop playing. We recommend to install some program to limit the time in front of your computer."

This game will eat your soul. Do not install this until you have a clear calender for at least 3 days. Stock up on snacks and drinks first too. Heck hire a maid/cook for the week. This "early access" game is more fleshed out than many full release games that have had a patch or two and that cost much more.

This game is early access, but not really. It's basically finished as far as I can tell. You start with a drill and a box. You have to feed your drill coal to keep it going. You craft some more drills and boxes. Then after a decent amount of iron and copper has been melted you can make automatic miners, belts and electricity, and this game becomes something truly mindblowing.

Your goal is to create the universes most effective automated factory, and by god you will try. Once you automate one thing, you can then automate another, and another, and eventually you will have a sprawling, massive factory that you didn't plan very well. It will bother you, so you'll make a new section of your factory, much more organized and effective. And then you'll make it bigger, and bigger and bigger, because by this point you realize that you need true mass production of everything if you want to get all the science packs produced, and your rocket built.

Then you'll look outside, or at your clock, and realize you haven't left your computer to eat, drink or sleep for five days. I'm not kidding, this game is worse than crack.

Day 42
Last night I had a dream. I flew high above the Earth and I gazed down at Creation. 'Twas not the Creation of a superior being, free and clean, clear and majestic, beautiful, bright, a world of magic and wonderment. No, the creation I looked upon was chaotic, frightening, full of over-complication and madness, dark, made by the hand of a lowly creature who's mind was twisted with the thoughts of the Unspeakable Creatures from the Other Places. Motivated by the inability to stop, he toiled away, adding to the monster he was creating, with no thoughts of orginization or coherence; it just had to fit. The veins of this creature covered the land, ever moving, little hands grabbing all as if for nourishment, but never satisfied. I watched the lungs of the beast breathe energy into it's nerves, fueling it's desire to consume the world. I could hear the scraping of it's jaws as it chewed at the Earth, swallowing it's riches only to spit them back up moments later.
As I watched from the ethereal, the Mad One ran about this leviathan as if he were a crazed Frankentein, bringing Life and movement to things that should be kept still. All of a sudden, he stopped. His eyes turned up to observe me, and I knew at once the horrible truth: this small, tireless worker for the Dark Ones, who's life was driven only by pain and insanity, this creature was me.

...

I awoke in a panic, sweat pooling around me. I knew I could never rest, never sleep; They won't let me. I can only build, only continue Their work. The designs don't make sense, but it doesn't matter; it works, and I must continue. We are close to our Goal, They say, though I know not what it is.
I log on once more. Peace will come only when I'm done...

I used a poisonous gas to kill off an area of forest, so I could build a bunch of pumpjacks in its place, to get the crude oil I needed to produce the ammo for my tank.
