Torchlighter Films

Torchlighter Films / Each year, during the official Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Day ceremony that takes place at Yad Vashem, six torches, representing the six million Jews, are lit by Holocaust survivors. Since 1995 short films depicting the stories of the survivors are shown as each torch is lit. Letters from the Holocaust Period

Letters from the Holocaust Period / From within the camps, ghettos, and prisons, prisoners tried to send news about their fate and the fate of their community to relatives and friends. These were often scribbled on scraps of paper, relying heavily on code words and hints so as to bypass the strict censorship. Many letters were concealed in hiding places and discovered only after the war; many others were thrown from the trains by deportees unaware of their destinations.

Music of the Holocaust

Music of the Holocaust / The songs that were created during the Holocaust in ghettos, camps, and partisan groups and later in the DP camps tell the stories of individuals, groups and communities in the Holocaust period and were a source of unity and comfort, and later, of documentation and remembrance. Kristallnacht / Photographs, artifacts and survivors' testimonies give us a glimpse into the destruction, the anguish, and suffering inflicted upon the Jews during Kristallnacht. Singled out for destruction were hundreds of synagogues in Germany and Austria. Synagogues, which occupy a central place in Jewish and communal life, served as a reminder to the Germans of the Jewish presence. During the riots hundreds of synagogues were burnt or desecrated. Jews were rounded up and sent to concentration camps.

Postcard Design Project

Postcard Design Project / In this collaboration between The International School for Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem and The Neri Bloomfield School of Design and Education, advanced graphic design students exhibit a series of postcards focusing on Holocaust remembrance. The postcards provide a basis for activities that can be implemented in both formal as well as informal educational settings. It is hoped that these graphic designs will trigger a dialogue about Holocaust awareness between young designers.

The Pen and the Sword: Jewish Artist and Partisan Alexander Bogen / After infiltrating the Vilna ghetto on a precarious rescue mission only days before its final liquidation, Alexander Bogen—Jewish artist, partisan, and former ghetto resident—was plagued by a reverberating question: “What motivates someone at the precipice of death to engage in artistic creation?” An artist and a native of Vilna, Bogen neither forsook his artistry nor ceased to sketch the people, places, and events he encountered following the Nazi occupation of Lithuania.

Felix Nussbaum: 1904-1944

Felix Nussbaum: 1904-1944 / Felix Nussbaum was born in Osnabrueck, Germany, and studied in Hamburg, Berlin and Rome. He and his companion, Felka Platek, settled in Belgium in 1935. In 1940, he was arrested with all other aliens and sent to the camps of Saint Cyprien and Gurs in southern France. Nussbaum managed to escape, and lived in hiding in Brussels until he was caught in 1944 and sent to Auschwitz, where he perished. Chess Sets, a Brief Respite from a Harsh Reality / Preserved in the Artifacts Collection of Yad Vashem's Museum are approximately twenty chess sets that were used by Jews during the Holocaust. Some were crafted during the war, others were made before the war and taken with Jews who were deported from their homes. Playing chess helped to alleviate the suffering of Jews and allowed them a few brief moments of relief from the hunger, the cold and the fear, temporarily easing their loneliness and sense of isolation.
