New Release Round-Up 02-17-17

RYAN ADAMS - Prisoner - Blue NoteRecords Ryan Adams' first original studio album since 2014, Prisoner was partly influenced by his divorce from singer Mandy Moore. The album features the singles “Do You Still Love Me", To Be Without You" and "Doomsday". Also available on Indie Exclusive Limited Edition Red Vinyl .

_________________________________________________________

SON VOLT - Notes Of Blue - Transmit Sound The 10 songs on Notes Of Blue are inspired by the spirit of the blues, but not the standard blues as most know it. The unique and haunting tunings of Mississippi Fred McDowell, Skip James and Nick Drake were all points of exploration for Farrar for the new collection. The album opens with the country soul of Promise the World, followed by Back Against the Wall, a song that could stand alongside the great Son Volt songs of their early albums. However, Notes Of Blue reflects the blues as it resides in the folk tradition, but heavily amplified. The primal stomp of Cherokee St, the frenetic guitar on Static and the raw slide in Sinking Down exude grit and attitude. Conversely, tracks such as The Storm and Cairo and Southern seamlessly meld blues with hypnotic melodies that add a unique balance to Notes of Blue. Also available on Indie Exclusive Limited Edition Vinyl which includes an autographed insert.

_________________________________________________________

HANNI EL KHATIB - Savage Times - Innovative Leisure Hanni El Khatib's first idea for his Savage Times project was to do something he’d never done before. Instead, he ended up doing... well, everything he’d never done before. He’d be playing new instruments, writing in unfamiliar new ways, opening himself up to an unrelenting stream of ideas and dedicating himself totally to pure musical instinct. And the result? 19 best-of-the-sessions songs, destined for vinyl release as a Limited Edition 10” LP Box Set , as well as the kind of creative revelations that only happen when you quit looking around and start looking ahead. Originally, he’d hoped to explode the lingering idea that he was simply a blues-rock guitar player, but that’s why Savage Times touches on everything from garage rock to punk to disco, hip-hop and even some unexpected solo-guitar self-portraiture. But on the way, he also exploded his own idea of what he could do—even maybe who he was, or would be. Savage Times was an experiment as well as an experience, that touched on some of the most personal, social & political elements to date.

NIKKI LANE - Highway Queen - New WestRecords Nikki Lane's remarkably dazzling third album Highway Queen , sees the young Nashville rebel emerge as one of country and rock’s most gifted songwriters. Produced by Lane and fellow singer-songwriter Jonathan Tyler, and recorded in Denton, Texas and Nashville, Tennessee, Highway Queen is an emotional tour-de-force. Blending potent lyrics, unbridled blues guitars and vintage Sixties country-pop swagger, Lane’s new music will resonate as easily with Black Keys and Lana Del Rey fans as those of Neil Young and Tom Petty. Highway Queen starts with the whiskey-soaked restlessness of “700,000 Rednecks,” a rowdy call to action, and ends on the profoundly raw “Forever Lasts Forever,” where Lane belts freely, mourning a failed marriage – the “lighter shade of skin” left behind from her wedding ring. Lane’s journey to heartbreak takes exquisite turns. “Companion” is pure Everly Brothers’ dreaminess (“I would spend a lifetime/ Playing catch you if I can”). Elsewhere, she goes on a Vegas bender on the rollicking “Jackpot,” fights last-call blues (“Foolish Heart”) and tosses off brazen one-liners at a backroom piano (“Big Mouth”). Lane, a Greenville, South Carolina native, is unique songwriter who didn’t take the traditional country artist path. Her backwoods roots are undercut by her chosen career as a fashion entrepreneur (she’s the owner of vintage clothing boutique High Class Hillbilly) who has lived – and been heartbroken in – Los Angeles, New York and Nashville. So it’s no surprise that her music seamlessly crosses musical genres with lyrics steeped in the doomed perseverance only a true dark horse romantic knows. Lane’s rapid rise in music is thanks to the fervent critical acclaim of her debut record Walk of Shame and 2014’s Dan Auerbach-produced All or Nothin’. With Highway Queen, 2017 is poised to be Lane’s major mainstream breakthrough. "I want to be the highway queen," Lane told Rolling Stone in 2015. "I'm obsessed with trucks, just like every other fucking country singer. But I want to make my own,” she said banging her fists on the table of a chic East Nashville cafe. So as she sings on the title track: place your bets, if you ain’t folding. Also available on Limited Edition Picture Disc Vinyl .

_________________________________________________________

ALISON KRAUSS - Windy City -Capitol Alison Krauss , the most awarded female artist in GRAMMY history (27 awards including Album of the Year in 2009), releases Windy City . Windy City is a beautifully curated collection of classic songs produced by Nashville Veteran Buddy Cannon. While they span different eras and musical genres, there is a unifying sensibility. Some of the songs are familiar like Gentle On My Mind, a signature song of Glen Campbell's, and You Don t Know Me which was a hit for Eddy Arnold and Ray Charles. Others were lesser known, like Willie Nelson's I Never Cared For You and All Alone Am I, originally recorded by Brenda Lee. JENS LEKMAN - Life Will See You Now -Secretly Canadian Jens Lekman describes his new record, Life Will See You Now , playfully, but also honestly, as "a midlife-crisis disco album; it's an existentialist record, about seeing the consequences of your choices". It's a typical Lekman album in several ways: sly humour is key to its heartfelt nature; it inverts pop's writing norm by making songs with sad concerns sound happy and songs with a happy subject sound sad; and it plays with notions of identity and the self. But, as the title suggests, it also represents a significant move forward, as if across a threshold. It's the more expansive, upbeat sound of a revitalised Lekman, who is just one of many characters in his new stories about the magic and messiness of different kinds of relationships. Also available on Indie Exclusive Limited Edition Orange Vinyl .

ALSO OUT THIS WEEK

CURRENT SINGLES/EPs

The Orwells - Terrible Human Beings Robert Randolph & The Family Band - Got Soul Big Sean - I Decided. The record includes nine original songs Giddens wrote or co-wrote while she and her band toured after Tomorrow Is My Turn's 2015 release, along with a traditional song and two civil rights-era songs, "Birmingham Sunday" and Staple Singers' well-known "Freedom Highway," from which the album takes its name. Giddens and the band will tour the U.S. in the spring.

_________________________________________________________

ALL THEM WITCHES - Sleeping Through The War -New West Records Produced by Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Rival Sons) and mixed/engineered by UK-bred young-gun Eddie Spear, All The Witches' Sleeping Through The War is the quartet’s most bold and well-crafted record to date. The album’s creation marks the first time in the band’s history that a record was written before entering the studio. This process allowed for an alignment of the band’s art, desire and time. Convening in Nashville for only six days after a year of relentlessly touring their New West Records debut Dying Surfer Meets His Maker, the band’s spirit coalesced in a rhythm of statement and melody that simply needs to be heard...repeatedly. With the guidance of Cobb and Spear, Sleeping Through The War captures the truest energy of the group, full blast, fun and contemplative. The record was made with volume in mind. Sleeping Through The War is meant to be played loud, cranked up and without reservation. Feel it live through your stereo system or listen to it speak in tongues through your headphones. The sounds are nothing without the songs, and the songs are nothing without the lyrics. This record is a result of constant touring, world travel, overstimulated/divided humanity, and a learning of awareness and compassion.

_________________________________________________________

LITTLE BIG TOWN - The Breaker - Capitol Nashville Little Big Town announce the release of their seventh studio album, The Breaker (Capitol Records Nashville), available February 24. The album, produced by Jay Joyce, features lead single, Better Man, written by Taylor Swift, and is currently climbing the charts at radio. The Breaker is about letting go of things that break you, it's about the new ground you try and break as a human being and as a musician. Sometimes you're the one that's broken and sometimes you re the breaker, said Little Big Town's Karen Fairchild. It's a sentimental record because we're feeling super grateful for our friends and family and the chance to share the next chapter.

_________________________________________________________

For more information on these and other releases out this week, check out our New Releases charts by week section and don't forget that many of these titles are also available on vinyl.

On Air - Live At The BBC Volume 2

In 1994, The Beatles' Live at the BBC was released to worldwide acclaim - hitting number one in the U.K. and number three in the U.S. and selling more than five million copies within six weeks. Now comes a new companion to The Beatles' first BBC collection, On Air - Live At The BBC Volume 2 On Air's 63 tracks, none of which overlaps with The Beatles' first BBC release, include 37 previously unreleased performances and 23 previously unreleased recordings of in-studio banter and conversation between the band's members and their BBC radio hosts. Also newly remastered for reissue, The Beatles' first Live at the BBC album sounds and looks better than ever. This collection of the group's BBC sessions mixed versions of their hits with a treasure trove of 30 songs The Beatles performed on air but never released on record in the 1960s.

WHILE SUPPLIES LAST GET A FREE EP WITH PURCHASE

HANNI EL KHATIB - HEAD IN THE DIRT

It's easy to blame Dan Auerbach's Easy Eye Studios for the sound of Hanni El Khatib's new album "Head in the Dirt," but that's an oversimplification. It's Nashville, the city, the pace, the people, who tell the story. Like Larry Sexton's engines, "Head in the Dirt" is forged from raw elements and a craftsman's eye. It's the deafening roar of a red-line engine, and cool as a cat's purr coasting in third gear. Follow Hanni around Nashville and catch an all the way live performance of "Nobody Move."

PREVIEW AND PURCHASE - HEAD IN THE DIRT
