My research has focused on alcohol and drug use, HIV infection and primary medical care with the following specific projects: linkage of alcohol and drug use treatment and primary medical care; addressing alcohol and drug use issues in the primary care setting; the impact of alcohol and drug use in HIV-infected persons; HIV prevention and treatment in Russian substance users; and establishing medical care for HIV-infected persons.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility

I have worked at Boston City Hospital and Boston Medical Center for the vast majority of the past 4 decades in large measure as a consequence of my desire to serve a safety net community. My focus clinically and from a research perspective has been on patients seen in this setting in primary care, many of whom have substance use disorders and some with HIV infection. Minority populations are disproportionately impacted by these medical conditions.

It is valuable to leverage the power of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives in solving complex problems. To achieve this goal, support for individuals from underrepresented groups is needed and I have sought to do this in my extensive mentoring efforts. Highlights of this work has been my support as the primary mentor for two black faculty on their NIH career development awards (K awards). Other work advancing these training goal occurs in my support and work with the CRIT (Chief Resident Immersion Training) Program, RAMS (Research in Addiction Medicine Scholars) Program and the Inclusion Diversity & Equity In Addiction medicine, Addiction health professions, and Addiction research (IDEAAA) program.

As Section Chief of General Internal Medicine for nearly 20 years (2002 – 2021), we recruited and supported the largest number of faculty from underrepresented groups in the Department of Medicine.
