MD, University of Massachusetts Medical School

Dr. Walkey investigates epidemiology and clinical outcomes of complications that occur in patients who are critically ill. Using clinical and administrative data, Dr. Walkey focuses on interations between organ systems during critical illness and seeks to find effective health care provider practice patterns that are associated with better patient outcomes. His research interests include sepsis, acute lung injury, and atrial fibrillation that occurs during critical illness.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility

I am committed to activities devoted to increasing the diversity of the biomedical research workforce and reducing disparities in healthcare delivery and health outcomes. I am committed to mentorship and career sponsorship for trainees and early career faculty from diverse backgrounds. I am also committed to promoting a diverse workforce; for example, I was part of a 5-person team focused on increasing diversity of our University biomedical research workforce who designed a multi-component strategy, including increasing use of NIH Diversity Supplements, creating an office for workforce diversity, and providing resources to support and retain our current student, faculty, and staff from underrepresented backgrounds. I also serve on the Steering Committee for Research within our hospital’s Health Equity Accelerator, which I am responsible for oversight and planning of research efforts devoted to reducing health disparities. Our Evans Center for Implementation and Improvement Science currently collaborates on multiple projects designed to understand and correct sources of health inequity. We currently are working on projects that seek to reduce disparities in satisfaction with the discharge process, and seek to understand difference in diabetes management strategies by race/ethnicity to understand and eliminate disparities in diabetes outcomes. In prior work, I have helped lead and design studies investigating disparities in guideline concordant insulin use during critical illness and in outcomes for covid-19 and atrial fibrillation. I am a co-investigator with MA-CEAL, co-leading the Evaluation Core designed to improve engagement with local communities to reduce disparities in vaccine uptake and research participation.

I have mentored more than 15 MD post-graduates in critical care health services research. Mentees have to date published >15 first-authored, peer reviewed manuscripts, including Web of Science Top 1% cited. Mentees have received multiple American Thoracic Society travel awards for research, as well as First Prize for research presented at the 2016 Massachusetts Thoracic Society Meeting. I received 2 Research Mentor Awards for outstanding achievement as a research mentor from the Boston University Department of Medicine during year 2016. I serve as a Director of the Evans Center for Implementation & Improvement Sciences, where we mentor School of Medicine faculty through completion of projects with scientific rigor.
