"Hurricanes have killed more people worldwide in the last fifty years than any other natural cataclysm."
~ Kerry Emanue
Extreme amounts of rain from Florence will continue to hammer the Carolinas and western Virginia through this weekend, triggering flash flooding and river flooding that could reach major to record levels.
Now that #HurricaneFlorence has arrived in the Carolinas, it will slowly crawl through the region this weekend. Because of that slow movement, heavy rainfall is likely to trigger catastrophic flooding in some areas. Put simply, Florence is a "Category 5 flood threat."

There is unprecedented amount of rain and flooding occurring right now from Hurricane Florence. Unfortunately, animals are the most vulnerable and most at-risk in disasters when they are left behind by their owners. That’s why pet parents should always evacuate WITH their pets. Never leave them behind.
Animals and pets left behind in disasters die from flooding, starvation and dehydration, and end up as strays outside -- homeless and abandoned. The luckier ones are rescued by disaster volunteers and first responders and placed into shelters. But this puts rescue workers at risk, can cost lots of money, and means the pet will need to be rehomed.
The best option is always to PREPARE IN ADVANCE for disasters. Have a plan for you and your pet(s) that includes bringing them with you or placing them with a friend or family member outside the disaster area, or boarding your pet in a pet kennel/pet boarding veterinary office or business, or staying with your pet at a friend’s or pet-friendly hotel, or finding an evacuation center that accepts pets. Check local media or call facilities to ask about pet policies. Having a plan in place in advance is the key.
WANT TO HELP THE ANIMALS OF HURRICANE FLORENCE? HERE's HOW:
1. DONATING - If you are looking to help the animals and pets impacted by Hurricane Florence, the national nonprofit organization American Humane, https://www.americanhumane.org, the local Charleston Animal Society, https://www.charlestonanimalsociety.org, Red Rover, https://redrover.org/news/hurricaneflorence/, the Humane Society of the U.S., https://bit.ly/2xen3hS, and ASPCA, https://bit.ly/2MvCJCo - are all excellent and are helping evacuate and support abandoned pets. Plus, RedRover also provides disaster grants for people who need emergency funds. The Humane Rescue Alliance, http://www.humanerescuealliance.org, and PetConnect Rescue, https://www.petconnectrescue.org, have been taking in cats and dogs from shelters, and putting them up for adoption.
2. ADOPT NOW - If you are looking to adopt a new cat or dog, now is the perfect time! Support the shelters in North and South Carolina like the Greenville Humane Society in South Carolina - there's no better time!
3. FOSTER - Want to help the shelters? Foster for them to help free up space for any incoming, displaced, or missing animals that are a result of the post-storm rescue efforts.
4. VOLUNTEER – Shelters and rescue organizations need your help now if you live in the states impacted by the storm, or can help the shelters outside the storms that have taken in animals from the impacted area.

Florence
Tropical Storm Florence | NOAA
Florence is now a tropical storm, but torrential rains continue (already 20 inches in some spots). NOAA's GOES-East weather satellite is keeping watch as Florence slowly crawls inland from the Carolina coast. The storm is expected to move inland across eastern South Carolina tonight and Saturday before turning north toward the western Carolinas early next week.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is an American scientific agency within the United States Department of Commerce that focuses on the conditions of the oceans, major waterways, and the atmosphere.
This geocolor enhanced imagery was created by NOAA's partners at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA).
