Mars at Opposition: Comparing 2016 & 2018 | Hubble
Mars Seen in Clear and Dusty Conditions
This video shows the difference in orientation of Mars between the 2016 and 2018 observations, and it also illustrates the obscuration by the 2018 dust storm. The opening image, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope on May 12, 2016, shows a clear atmosphere. Three-dimensional models created from Viking mission photographs illustrate how the northern hemisphere was tilted away from Earth in 2018. The final image, taken by Hubble on July 18, 2018, shows a global dust storm, with spring in the southern hemisphere.
Credits NASA, ESA, and J. DePasquale (STScI)
Image Dates: May 12, 2016 and July 18, 2018
Duration: 30 seconds
Publication: July 26, 2018

Mars and Its Moons in Motion | Hubble
This time-lapse animation of Hubble images shows Mars rotating over 43 minutes. The video begins with the moon Deimos traveling from right to left as it orbits Mars. Then Phobos makes an appearance from the right before disappearing behind the Red Planet’s shadow. The swift-moving moons’ orbital periods are 30.3 hours and 7.6 hours, respectively. Though Mars has been known since antiquity, the moons were telescopically discovered during the Mars opposition of 1877.
