#ChinaThreeGorges has launched a €9bn offer to take full control of #EDP, the Portuguese utility, in what would be one of the biggest Chinese takeovers of a European company. It would value the whole group at €11.8bn, or about €25.6bn including net debt. #CTG's existing 23.3% stake stems from a €2.7bn deal with the Portuguese government in 2011 that completed the privatisation of EDP in the wake of the country's bailout by the EU and the IMF.

EDP has itself been the subject of speculation about potential takeover interest from Gas Natural of Spain and Engie of France over the past year. Lu Chun, chairman of CTG, said the company was 'strongly committed to preserving EDP's Portuguese identity, with headquarters in Lisbon and status as a public listed company in the Lisbon stock exchange'.

#China is ready to approve #Qualcomm Inc.’s $43bn takeover of #NXPSemiconductors NV if it gets assurances that the #US will lift a 7-year ban on homegrown telecoms giant #ZTE Corp. The antitrust regulator has cleared all factual investigations, is satisfied with the remedies Qualcomm’s offering and only procedural issues remain. China’s review of Qualcomm’s largest-ever acquisition has languished amid an escalating trade fight between the world’s two largest economies, fueling concern that the NXP deal might become a bargaining chip. At the same time, Beijing wants ZTE freed up to buy the U.S. chips and components it needs to make networking gear and smartphones.

British sandwich and coffee shop chain #PretAManger was sold for $2bn (1.5bn pounds) on Tuesday (May 29) to an investment fund of Germany’s billionaire #Reimann family, as part of a global acquisition spree aimed at challenging Nestle in the coffee sector. The sale values Pret at more than 1.5bn pounds ($2bn) including debt and gives Pret founders Julian Metcalfe and Sinclair Beecham a final exit from their remaining investment in the chain they founded 32 years ago.

For Luxembourg-based purchaser #JABHoldings, the acquisition of a majority stake in Pret from #privateequity firm Bridgepoint and other minority investors is the latest in a multi-billion dollar series of takeovers designed to expand its coffee and beverage empire. #JAB has already bought Keurig Green Mountain and Peet’s Coffee & Tea, and Keurig subsequently struck a deal worth more than $21bn to combine with soda maker Dr Pepper Snapple Group.

#PayPal plans to spend $2.2bn to buy #iZettle, a European payments company that provides point-of-sale software and other services to brick-and-mortar shops. iZettle, based in Stockholm, Sweden, had said just this month that it intended to soon go public.

The proposed deal, the largest in PayPal’s history, would give the company a stronger foothold in #Europe and a real in presence brick-and-mortar retail where it will compete against companies like U.S.-based Square, which has executed well in building out a strong suite of financial services beyond its original point-of-sale system on its way to a market cap of more than $21 billion.

Under #Trump and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the #UnitedStates ( #CFIUS), the attitude to Chinese ownership of US assets has become belligerent. The rejection of the Ant Financial bid for MoneyGram is the most obvious example, but the truth is anything at all involving a remotely sensitive area - data, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, robotics - is now off the table.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the broader Chinese state infrastructure that it speaks for have also changed their position dramatically in recent years. The modern handbook for state-approved outbound acquisition is Made in #China 2025, the strategic plan issued by premier Li Keqiang in May 2015, but only receiving international attention since a China-US trade war became a threat.

#Airbus SE is set to close a deal to take a controlling stake in #Bombardier Inc’s #CSeries jetliner program, effective July 1, in a move expected to kickstart the European planemaker’s ability to put its marketing and cost-cutting muscle into the Canadian plane program. Bombardier agreed in October to sell Airbus a 50.01% stake in its flagship commercial jet for a symbolic Canadian dollar, as the plane program battled sluggish sales and low production, which made it harder to keep a lid on costs. Airbus, by contrast, will be able to offer airlines deals by packaging the CSeries with its own jets and is expected to use its purchasing prowess to drastically cut the price of parts, along with improving efficiencies internally.
