Pickerel Weed (Pontederia parviflora)

This is the early stages of the flowering of this inflorescence, and how amazing is it that all the flowers open in a line from top to bottom instead of randomly, or just the bottom. One may wonder how this could be, but from our perspective it is really beautiful. When these flowers wither as the next ones open up, the characteristics of the inflorescence will change to a more random and chaotic appearance, and passers-by will not pay much notice.
Many flowers are so complicated in appearance they look like a mess to the casual observer, even though the inflorescence only has one flower. Some are loved an treasured by millions like the fragrant inflorescence of the lilac.
Yet they have evolved to what we see now, and will continue to evolve into new shapes, sizes and species, as what we see is but a moment in an ever changing natural world.
