Happy Independence Day! Here's some science to enjoy with your Fourth of July activities - this image shows valvular interstitial cells (VICs) grown on regenerative scaffolds by the Disease Biophysics Group at SEAS. Rotary Jet Spinning (a modified cotton candy machine technique for producing nanofibers) was used to create aligned fibrous heart valve scaffolds onto which VICs were seeded and allowed to grow into tissues. VICs aligned in the direction of the fibers (stripes) and when allowed to overcrowd, formed swirling tissue balls (stars).

For her senior design project, alumna Jennifer Hu, S.B. '14, worked on an implantable drug delivery system that could be remotely triggered to release regenerative cues at important times in bone fracture repair. The encouragement of mentors and collaborators helped her become a stronger, more confident scientist and engineer. Bryan Bu’s senior thesis project could make it easier for clinicians to use an MRI technique called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to evaluate patients experiencing traumatic brain injuries. Bu, an engineering sciences – bioengineering concentrator, developed a customized 3D printer that can quickly and cost-effectively produce a DTI calibration tool.
