Offline Posting with Smart Retry
We’re excited to announce a major performance improvement for G+ on iOS. We’ve introduced the ability to post while offline or with a low quality connection. Your post will automatically go through once your connection improves. This has already shown a 60% decrease in post failures from iOS devices, which means less frustration in posting to your favorite Collections & Communities when you aren’t at your computer. Is Google+ Purging Users...or Just Losing Them?
UPDATE: Thanks to the insights of +CircleCount and a few others in the comments below, I think we've solved the mystery. It looks like about 6 months or so ago Google decoupled Collection following from profile following (it used to be that any follow of one of your collections also followed your profile by default). In addition, they appear to no longer promote individual profiles to new users, but instead promote top Collections. All of that makes sense with Google+'s changed direction.
ORIGINAL POST
The screen caps below are the +CircleCount follower graphs for several influential Google+ profiles for the past 6 months. For comparison, the second one (that rises steadily) is the official Google+ account.
The first graph is my own. As you can see, I had a pretty steady increase in followers until the turn of the year, and have been in decline ever since.
The other examples (3-5) are from other influential users, all of whom are currently active on G+. I actually looked at many more influencer profiles, and found that the patterns in these three represent typical patterns for the past 6 months.
Those with a very high number of followers started a steady decline around the middle of last year, while those with under 100K mostly have gone flat since then.
We've seen similar patterns in the past, but never to my memory for this long a time. Usually they seemed to indicate times when Google was purging fake accounts, but those campaigns usually take place relatively quickly.
The other explanation would be that Google+ has actually begun to lose users, but I doubt that for two reasons: 1) the official Google+ account, which tends to be followed by almost all new users, has continued to grow, and 2) most people who stop using G+ don't deactivate their accounts. They simply stop using them, but typically the accounts live on for a long time. In fact, I'm not sure that Google ever purges an account just for inactivity.
So what do you think is causing this? +martin shervington +David Amerland +Ben Fisher +Dustin W. Stout (if someone can figure out how to ping the official G+ page please do, I can't for some reason).
