Failure Modes in Machine Learning
"In the last two years, more than 200 papers have been written on how Machine Learning (ML) can fail because of adversarial attacks on the algorithms and data; this number balloons if we were to incorporate non-adversarial failure modes. The spate of papers has made it difficult for ML practitioners, let alone engineers, lawyers and policymakers, to keep up with the attacks against and defenses of ML systems. However, as these systems become more pervasive, the need to understand how they fail, whether by the hand of an adversary or due to the inherent design of a system, will only become more pressing."

A day in the life of an Oxford Astrophysicist | MetaFilter
Just what does an Oxford Astrophysicist do? Let's listen to Dr. Becky:

When people find out I'm an astrophysicist - I often get asked: "So, what do you actually do all day?" The easiest way to answer that question is to show you. From data crunching, to seminars, to journal clubs, emails and chatting on the radio; this was my Thursday 14th November 2019.

How to Balance Technical Debt
"TL;DR: Split your sprints / weeks / months into a set of Engineering activities and Product activities. Measure and maintain a ratio of work between these two categories for every period. A healthy ratio is 25% engineering to 75% product. When an objective metric of quality goes below its threshold, then your team increases the ratio to something else like 50% / 50% until the metric improves. This tells you when to make improvements, and when to stop some kinds of improvements."
