The simplest way to change your WordPress language is to do so on the General Settings page, but keep in mind this will change the language for the front and back ends of your site. Continue to the third section if you only wish to change one.

Log into the WordPress admin. Open the Settings menu, and select General. Scroll down to the bottom until you see the Site Language setting. Select the language you’d like to use from the dropdown menu, and click Save Changes to make the switch.

change WordPress Language

How to Add a Language to Your WordPress Directory

If you’re not having much luck using the General Settings page, you can try the more complicated solution and add a language to your site’s directory. Click here to open a repository of WordPress files for multiple languages.

These language files are developed by large teams of volunteers, so they’re not always up to date. Scroll down the list until you find the language you wish to install. Make sure it’s compatible with the version of WordPress you’re using. You can see which versions the language files are compatible with by viewing the Version column.

Basically, languages marked green are compatible with the latest version of WordPress, which your site should be running. Languages marked orange or red are outdated. Make sure you backup your site before installing these, though it would be in your best interest to not install them at all.

Make note of the text in the WP Locale column. For example, the Spanish (Mexico) language has a WP Locale code of es_MX. The “es” part is a language code for “español,” and the “MX” part is a country code for Mexico.

Uploading the Language Files to Your Site

Click the language you want to install on your site, and download its files to your computer by using the Download button on its individual page. Extract the ZIP folder on your computer, and open the WordPress folder inside of it.

Open the wp-content folder, and open the Languages folder. Open your site’s root directory through your host (File Manager in cPanel) or an FTP client, such as FileZilla (PC/Mac) or Cyberduck (Mac). Open the wp-content folder in your site’s directory, create a new folder inside of it, and name it “languages”. Open the folder when you’re done.

Go back to the Languages folder you opened on your computer, and upload all of the .mo and .po files to the Languages folder you created in your site’s directory. Refresh your file manager when you’re done.

Activating the Files in Your wp-config.php File

Open your site’s wp-config.php file, and add this line of code to it:

define (‘WPLANG’, ‘es_MX’);

Change “es_MX” to the code you found in the WP Locale column for the language you want to use. Save the file, and refresh your file manager.

Using Different Languages for the Frontend and Backend

If you want to use a different language for the frontend and backend of your site, follow the instructions in the previous section.

Once you’re done, open your site’s wp-content folder followed by the Themes folder followed by your individual theme’s folder, and open the functions.php file inside of it.

Add this filter to it:

add_filter(‘locale’, ‘wpse27056_setLocale’);
function wpse27056_setLocale($locale) {
if ( is_admin() ) {
return ‘en_US’;
}

return $locale;
}

This changes the language displayed in the WordPress admin to the United States’ version of the English language. Use this simple table to find your country’s language and country codes, and replace it with the language you’d like to use.

Imagine the following scenario: You are running a WordPress website. Everything is fine, you put in a decent amount of hours every week, traffic is growing and your site is neatly buzzing along.

Then, from one moment to the next, everything changes. For one reason or another, your site crashes. Nothing works anymore, the website is offline, nobody can reach it and you can’t log in.

Maybe something went wrong on the server, maybe the database got corrupted, you accidentally deleted an important file or somebody hacked you.

Whatever the reason, your site is history and you have no way of bringing it back. All the work, money, effort and sweat you invested is no longer there.

Now imagine yourself in one of these two situations:

  1. You have a full and recent backup of your site in a secure location ready to be brought online.
  2. You have no backup whatsoever, your host doesn’t offer any backup solutions either and your only option is to somehow fix the existing (crashed) site.

Which do you think would make your pulse and blood pressure skyrocket faster? Yeah, us too.

Performing regular backups is one of the most important tasks for anyone owning a WordPress website.

Failing to put some sort of system in place that guarantees you have an up-to-date and complete backup of your website at all times is a good way give yourself a heart attack later down the line.

Therefore, in the interest of your physical and mental health, this article will show you how to properly back up WordPress.

We will talk about what a complete WordPress backup consists of, how to manually back up your WordPress website, show you how to do the same thing with a free plugin and finally present you with a few more solutions to always keep a copy of your site around.

This is a lot of ground to cover so we better dive right in.

What is a Complete WordPress Backup?

Before we show you how to perform a WordPress backup, let’s first have a look at what we mean when we talk about backing up WordPress. What exactly do we need to save in order to to be able to recover our site later?

The WordPress File System

You might not be aware of it but every WordPress website consists of two parts: the file system and the database.

The file system is what you see when you dial into your server via FTP. First and foremost, it contains the important core files that make WordPress work.

For example, in the root directory, you can find important configuration files like wp-config.php which connects your site to its database (more on that later) and also index.php which browsers use to start rendering your website.

Then we have two folders named wp-admin and wp-includes. In the first one, you can find most of the files that make the WordPress backend work and provide all functionality in the dashboard. They also contain the images, JavaScript and CSS files to make it look good.

On the other hand, the files inside wp-includes contain many of the main functions, fonts, widgets and more that make WordPress websites.

In addition to that, the WordPress file system also holds everything that makes your site your site, namely in the wp-content directory.

Here, WordPress saves plugins and themes which determine the design and functionality of your site, but also the uploads folder that contains all images and other media you have uploaded.

Finally, the main folder houses a number of system files that are important to run your site on a server such as .htaccess which enables WordPress to use pretty permalinks.

Sounds important, right? However, you might be surprised to hear that almost anything on your server can be lost or replaced without it being a big deal. In fact, the WordPress core files change with every core update and it’s no problem at all.

The exception to this is wp-content. Anything inside that folder is very “personal” and unique to your site and thus can not be replaced as easily. For that reason it is also the most important part to save when backing up.

The WordPress Database

While most people would consider “their website” to be what’s on their server, quite the opposite is true. The second part of a WordPress website – the database – is by far the more important.

While it’s theoretically possible to get your website back on track if all you have is the database

(even if it’s a hassle to put the images and plugins back in place), the opposite is not true.

If the database is gone without a way to get it back, you have essentially lost your site.

That’s because the WordPress file system is merely a gateway to communicate with the database. The latter holds all your important content such as posts, pages, widgets and really makes up the core of your site.

So, if the database vanishes or becomes unusable, all of that is basically lost unless you have a backup or saved your content in another form somewhere else.

Scary, right? But that’s exactly why it’s so important to learn how to back up WordPress, something we will get to now.

How to Back Up WordPress Manually

In order to avoid the worst case scenario, one of the most essential skills is knowing how to back up your site manually.

Being able to make a copy of your site by hand really comes in handy it is down and you want to create a backup before troubleshooting the problem (in case you break something).

So let’s talk about that first.

Download Your Site Files

As mentioned above, every WordPress website consists of two parts: its files and the corresponding database. To manually back up WordPress, the first thing we do is download the files.

For that, you need to access your server via an FTP client such as FileZilla. Alternatively, many hosts also provide access to your file system via cPanel or other administration tools.

Whichever you choose, make sure to enter the root directory of your site, mark all files and folders in there and move them to a location on your hard drive. This will start the download process.

In some cases it might also make sense to activate force showing hidden files from the options menu in order to download .htaccess and other system files, especially if you have custom code in there.

In any case, depending on the size of your site and the number of images and plugins, the download might take a while. Get yourself some coffee or move on to the database – your choice.

Download the WordPress Database

Next, we will save the WordPress database. Most hosting providers will provide some sort of admin platform to access and manage it and you need to figure out how your host handles this.

A very common solution is phpMyAdmin, which is what we will use for our example. You might already be familiar with this program from when you set up your database to install WordPress.

First, you need to log in to your database administration portal and find your database. If you are using phpMyAdmin, all available databases are listed on the left side.

Click on the name of the one you want to back up. If you don’t know which one it is, you can find that out by looking inside the wp-config.php file of your WordPress installation.

Next, find Export at the top of the screen. Choose Custom for export method to access additional options, then configure as follows:

  • Check that all tables are marked for export (unless you have several databases with different prefixes in there or another reason to exclude tables)
  • Select an output name and compression (we recommend Gzip as it makes the database faster to download and upload)
  • Ensure to select SQL for format and that you export both structure and data
  • Finally, check the following under Object creation options:
    • ‘Add DROP TABLE / VIEW / PROCEDURE / FUNCTION / EVENT statement’
    • ‘IF NOT EXISTS’
    • ‘AUTO_INCREMENT’
    • ‘Enclose table and column names with backquotes’

When you now hit Go at the bottom of the screen, you should soon be prompted with a file download. This is your database. Save it and wait until the download is finished.

Once both your files and database are successfully located on your computer, the manual backup is complete. Now all that’s left is storing them in a secure location in case you need to restore WordPress manually later on.

How to Back Up WordPress with UpDraftPlus

Alright, now that we know how to back up WordPress manually, let’s go through the same process with UpDraftPlus, one of the leading WordPress backup plugins.

Why UpDraftPlus?

The plugin is by far one the most popular solutions to back up WordPress and has more than 800,000 active installs.

UpDraftPlus has the ability to schedule automatic backups, can restore from backup with one click, split large sites into multiple archives and more.

It’s biggest plus, however, is that even the free version lets you back up your site to remote locations such as Dropbox, FTP and Email. Most other plugins only offer this featured with premium addons.

Yet, is this absolutely necessary? Well, saving backups on the server is better than nothing, however, if your server goes down along with your site, the backups are also gone. Therefore, remote backups are clearly the better idea.

Install the Plugin

The installation of UpDraftPlugs follows the usual process: Go to Plugins > Add New, type ‘Updraftplus’ into the search bar and hit enter. Find the plugin in the list and click Install Now to start the installation. Once that is done, click Activate Plugin. That’s it.

Perform a Backup

You next step is to find the options for UpdraftPlus under Settings > UpdraftPlus Backups.

From here, you can back up and restore, see the backup status of your site and existing backups as well as configure all settings. You also have the option to buy the premium version or paid add-ons.

For the beginning, all we want to do is perform a normal backup. For that, we need to hit the big Backup Now button on the first tab.

This will open a new window where you can choose whether to back up the database, files or both. It will also warn you that the backup won’t be sent to a remote storage since you haven’t set one up yet.

Proceed by clicking Backup Now at the bottom. The backup will start and you will see a progress bar. Lean back and relax, there’s nothing for you to do at the moment.

Once done, the new backup will appear in the Existing Backups tab.

As you can see, it is saved in several parts: Database, plugins, themes, uploads and other. This allows you to download each part on its own if needed.

You should also notice that the backup doesn’t include WordPress core files.

As mentioned earlier, these can always be downloaded with a fresh WordPress version and UpdraftPlus refrains from saving them in order to save space.

Finally, from this screen you have the option to restore or delete your backup and view its log file.

So far so good. However, in order to be really protected from harm, we want to set up a regular backup schedule and send the saved files to a remote location.

Create a Backup Schedule

In the plugin settings you can set up how often your files and database should be backed up automatically. All you need to do is use the drop-down menus to pick your preferred schedule. This can be every couple of hours, daily, weekly or monthly.

On the right, you may also choose the number of backups the plugin should keep so you are able to go back several versions if necessary.

However, how often should you back up? Well, it depends on your site and you need to make that decision depending on your own situation.

If you have a very busy website that is updated often and receives a lot of comments, a shorter interval makes a lot of sense. On the other hand, for a blog that only sees a new article once a week and doesn’t get a lot of user interaction, a weekly backup might be enough.

Below the schedule section, you can choose from a number of remote services to save backups to.

It is highly recommended that you take advantage of this feature since many of the services can be used for free. Pick whichever suits you best and follow the on-screen instructions on how to connect it to your site.

The rest of the settings can usually stay as they are, unless you want to exclude specific files and directories from being backed up. UpdraftPlus itself already does so with a number of directories that contain their own backup files.

Further below, you have the option to receive a report via email whenever a backup performed. In the expert settings you can also enable debug mode, set the size at which to split archives, whether to keep an additional local copy of remotely saved files, the server directory to save backups to and SSL settings.

In most cases there’s no need to make changes here. When you are done with the configuration, click Save Changes at the bottom and your automatic backup schedule is set up.

Congrats, your site security has just been improved significantly!

Other Backup Solutions for WordPress

While it’s one of the more popular ones, UpdraftPlus is not the only backup plugin for WordPress out there. Users can also choose from several other high-quality options to back up their WordPress websites.

Duplicator

We already talked about this plugin in our article on how to clone a WordPress website .

It’s a great tool to easily create an archive of your entire site and download it to your computer. It’s also one of the easiest to use out there.

However, to be able to use remote storage and scheduled backups users need to buy the pro version which costs between $39 and $119 per year depending on how many sites you want to use it on.

BackWPup

Another solution that offers cloud backups even in the free version. Apart from creating a backup schedule, BackWPup can also repair and optimize your database and will inform you about backups via email. The plugin’s Pro version offers additional features for $75 to $190.

BackupWordPress

The solution by Human Made enables you to create different backup schedules for your database and file system, however, the free version does not offer any cloud storage.

This feature is reserved for the developer version ($99). However, BackupWordPress will email your backup files to you if you wish.

BackupBuddy (premium)

The only premium-only plugin on this list, BackupBuddy is made by iThemes, one of the leading companies in the WordPress industry. The plugin can back up your files and database as well as clone websites and move them to another server.

This backup solution supports a number of cloud services including Amazon, Dropbox, FTP and others. It costs between $80 and $150 per year and has an option for purchasing a one-time lifetime license for $297.

Summing Up

Losing your WordPress website is one of the worst things that can happen. The only thing worse than that is to lose your site with no way to bring it back.

For that reason, knowing how to back up WordPress is one of the most essential skills of anyone working with the platform.

Above you have learned what exactly comprises a WordPress backup and the parts that make up a WordPress site. You now also know how to save both site components manually and create a full backup.

Plugin solutions make saving your website much more convenient and we have introduced you to several such solutions. Yet, if for some reason using them is not an option, knowing the manual route can be a real lifesaver.

Hopefully, this tutorial has given you the final nudge you needed to put a backup solution for your site in place. We hope even more that you will never need it.

Which method do you use to back up WordPress? Anything to add to the above? We would love to hear from you in the comments section!

Optimizer has  come a long way with your love and cooperation in these 2 years. This Year we are planning to add some cool features that users are requesting time to time. We hope Optimizer is making your life easy in building your WordPress websites.  In this version of the theme, we have fixed some small bugs and added various features that expands the capability of optimizer further.

Speeding up the Customizer

After the latest WordPress update, you may have noticed that the Customizer became a little slower. We have identified that this has caused by the inline editor that lets you edit the text upon clicking the widget text. Since its slowing down the whole customizer we have  disabled the inline editor by default You can enable the inline editors anytime from Customize > Miscellaneous > Others.

Header Customization

Search bar in header

In this version we have added the option to display a search bar in the header menu. Previously you could only display the Search bar in the Topbar area above the header. You can enable it from Customize > Header > Header.

Tagline font Size Option

We have also added another option which was asked in the support forum for many times. You can now change the font size of the tagline that appears under the logo. The option can be found in Customize > Header > Site Title & Logo.

Hamburger Menu Color

Another popular request was to ability to change the Background color of the Hamburger menu. Good News! We have added this option that can be accessible from Customize > Miscellaneous > Mobile Layout. You can change the color to anything you want. By Default the color is set to Black.

Sidebars Everywhere

Widgetized Page with Sidebar

In previous versions Optimizer PRO, you could not display Sidebar on pages that you created with Widgets. In this version, you will able to display Sidebars on Right on those widgetized Pages. To display a Sidebar on those pages, simply go to the page Edit screen of the page and Select the “Widgetized Page with Right Sidebar” from the Page Template option and you are good to go. If you have created Custom Sidebar from Customize > Widgets, you can also display that specific sidebar from the “Custom Right Sidebar” option of the page edit screen.

Sidebar on Posts Widget

You can now display a Sidebar on Posts Widget. Previously you could only display a sidebar only with Layout 4 or Layout 5 of the Posts widget. Now you can display the sidebar with any layout of the Posts Widget. Just Select the Sidebar from the new Sidebar option of the Posts widget and your Sidebar will show up on your Post Widget.

Widget Features

Advanced Widget Settings

In this version we added 3 Advanced widget settings that lets you customize you widgets appearance and Visibility. These 3 options can be accessed in any widgets by clicking the “Advanced” tab.

1. Widget Visibility: You can now define in What type of device you want to display the widget. You can either display it on Desktop or display it on Mobile. By default it is set to display on both.

2.  Widget Margin: You can add margin (external space around the widgets) to create space between each widget.

3. Widget Padding: You can now add padding (inner space in widgets) to make the widget have bigger empty space around it.

Animation Interval Options

We also added Animation interval option in Testimonial widget that lets you specify the seconds of pause to take on each testimonial slide. And we also added the same interval option on Dynamic Content widget which does the same thing.

We also added the interval option in Static Slideshow, so you can now specify that seconds of pause between each slide. You can access this option from Customize > Frontpage > Slider > Static Slideshow.

Linking Widgets to Buttons

As you already know that the widgets can be linked to menus and Static Slider buttons. In this version, we have expanded this feature to make it work with Buttons that are created with the “Button Shortcode”. You simply write this to create a link between a button and widget of the same page: #optimizer-font_text-8=About

This follows the same rules that is used in Slider Buttons.

Smooth Scrolling

We got lots of requests in past 2 years to add an option to disable the Smooth Scrolling feature of the theme. Apparently on macbooks, the smooth scrolling is very wonky. So we disabled this smooth scrolling option on macOS and also added an option to enable/disable this feature. You can access this option from Customize > Miscellaneous > Other.

Bug Fixes

We have also fixed lots of bugs in this version. You can check out the changelog of this version.

How to Update

Go to Appearance -> Themes to update the theme to the latest version. Make sure you have your license key inserted from Appearance > Optimizer License; otherwise you won’t be able to update the theme. Please make sure you backup your theme and widget options before updating the theme.

As easy as it is to set up and run a website with WordPress, there’s still a lot you can do wrong. Among the biggest mistakes user make:

  • Neglecting to back up their WordPress site
  • Not caring about WordPress security
  • Using plugins and themes from non-trustworthy sources

One of the worst practices, however, is making changes to their live sites.

Ever found yourself uploading your modified functions.php or style sheet to your site praying that it won’t break something? Or tried out a new plugin only to find that it shot your entire site to hell and left you scrambling for a fix for hours?

There’s gotta be a better way, right?

Well, it turns out there is and it is called local development. What’s that you ask? Well, it basically means setting up a copy of your WordPress website on your local computer instead of an online web server.

Why would anyone do that? Well, knowing how to install WordPress offline offers numerous benefits. In this post you will not only learn what those are but also how up a local server on your computer and install WordPress on it.

Are you ready for that? Then let’s get started.

Why Install WordPress Offline?

There are many good reasons to install WordPress on a local server. For some people, like theme and plugin developers, it’s even mandatory in order to test their work.

In addition to that, in contrast to an online staging environment a local development server is completely independent of an Internet connection and you can take it with you wherever you go.

Besides that, since everything is happening on your local computer, you benefit from faster loading times and a more efficient workflow.

Plus, installing WordPress offline allows you to test site changes, themes and plugins in a safe environment that, if something goes wrong, won’t take your live site down with it.

Finally, as you will see below, setting up a local development environment is completely free, something that can’t be said about most rented online space.

Convinced yet? Then let’s take a look at how to make this happen.

Some Things You Will Need

As you probably know, the WordPress platform can not run on its own but needs a server environment. In fact, it has some very specific requirements.

For example, WordPress needs both PHP and MySQL present in order to work. The former is the main language it is written in while the latter powers its database.

In addition to that, most servers come with database administration interface like phpMyAdmin (unless you know how to write MySQL queries, that is) and some other extras.

Long story short, to install WordPress offline, you need to recreate this kind of environment on your local computer.

There are several free solutions out there to do so, however, in this tutorial will be using XAMPP, which stands for cross-platform, Apache, MySQL, PHP, Perl.

As you can already see from the name, this piece of software contains all of the components to set up a local server. It also works across platforms, meaning both PC, Mac and Linux users can use it. Plus, you can download XAMPP for free from Apache Friends.

There are also Windows and Mac specific software stacks called WAMP and MAMP. They also get the job done, however, we found XAMPP to be the most versatile of the pack.

Installing XAMPP on Your Computer

In the following, you will learn how to install XAMPP on a PC with Windows 7. Don’t worry, if you run a different machine, the steps should be very similar and we will include some specific advice for Mac users further below.

1. Run the Installer

After download, double click on the XAMPP installation file. Upon startup, you might get a warning about using software from unknown sources. If so, allow to continue to the installation wizard.

First, you need to choose the components you want to install. Apache and PHP are activated by default and we also need to check the boxes for MySQL and phpMyAdmin.

XAMPP also comes with some other things like a virtual FTP and mail server, however, unless you have specific reasons to install those, you probably don’t need them. Click Next when done.

After that, you will be asked where to install XAMPP. Be aware that the software will also save your websites in the same place so choose an easy installation path. Otherwise you might have to do a lot of clicking later on.

The next step of the installation process is a promotion for Bitnami. While they offer an interesting tool, we don’t need it at this point. Therefore, uncheck the box and move on to the next step.

XAMPP is now ready to install. One more click and it will start copying all necessary files to your hard drive. After that’s done, the software is installed. Leave the last checkbox active so it gets started right away after you click Finish.

2. Configure XAMPP

When XAMPP is first started, you might receive a firewall warning from Windows. If that’s the case, give it full permission for private networks so it can work.

After that, you will see the control panel for the first time.

You can start both Apache and MySQL by clicking their respective Start buttons. Usually this should go off without a hitch but some users might encounter conflicts with other applications that use the same ports as XAMPP like Skype.

One way to solve the problem is to close the conflicting application and start the blocked XAMPP component again. However, in Skype, you can also fix it permanently by opening the video call software and going to Tools > Options > Advanced > Connection. Here, uncheck box that says Use port 80 and 443 for additional incoming connections.

After saving and restarting Skype, the problem should no longer appear.

Back to XAMPP, under Config in the upper right corner, you also have the possibility to configure which modules should be started automatically at startup. By checking Apache and MySQL you can make sure both components will kick in by themselves next time you open up the XAMPP control panel.

3. Test the Connection

Once you are done and everything is running, it’s time to test your local server. For that, open any browser and type in http://localhost/. If everything is fine, you should see the following XAMPP welcome screen:

That’s it, the software is now working properly. Well done!

Installing XAMPP on Mac OS

Getting started with XAMPP on a Mac is even easier. All you need to do is download the .dmg file and open it.

After that, either double click on the XAMPP icon or drag it to your application folder. The program is now installed and you can configure it the same way as described above.

Creating a Database in XAMPP

Like on a web server, the first thing we need in order to install WordPress offline is a MySQL database. Thankfully, we can use phpMyAdmin for that since we installed it during the setup.

You can either get there by using the phpMyAdmin link at the bottom of the XAMPP home screen or go to http://localhost/phpmyadmin directly.

There is also an Admin button in the XAMPP control panel next to MySQL which will take you to the same place.

Setting up a database in XAMPP is basically the same as on any other server with some small differences. To get started, click Databases at the top of the screen to get to this screen.

Here, enter a name for your database under Create a database.

Pick the appropriate collation from the drop-down menu (usually utf8_your_language or, if your language is not available, pick utf8mb4_general_ci).

Then hit Create.

For a local installation that’s all it takes. You don’t necessarily need to set up a password and database user.

However, creating them can be a good idea anyway since using the same database name, username and password as the live environment makes moving back and forth between live site and local installation much easier.

If you do choose to set up a user, click on your newly created database to open it and then choose Privileges at the top.

Pick Add User at the bottom. You will then be asked to provide a username, host and password.

Choose Local for host from the drop-down menu. Everything else is up to your choosing but it’s a good idea to note down the info for later.

Before creating your user by clicking Go at the bottom, make sure the checkbox to grant all privileges for your new database is active.

That’s it for the database, now on to the installation.

Installing WordPress Offline

An offline installation of WordPress is set up basically in the same way as any other installation

The main difference: There is no FTP client involved.

Instead of dialing into your server to upload files, you can just copy them to a location on your hard drive which is much faster.

Inside the XAMPP directory there is a folder called htdocs. It’s here that all your websites get saved.

To set up a new one, all you need to do is access the directory and create a new folder. Name it anything you want, preferably the domain name of your site. In any case, it should be something you can remember since it is part of the browser path to access your local site.

Now, in order to install WordPress offline, download the latest version and unpack it. After that, all you need to do is copy the files inside to your newly created local site directory.

That’s basically it. When you now access http://localhost/yourdirectory the normal WordPress installation wizard should start. You can follow it as you usually would, complete with typing in your database credentials and all.

The only difference is that if you have chosen not to provide a MySQL user and password, in the step where you are asked to input that information, you need to give root as the user and leave the password field empty.

After that, provide a website title, username, password and email as you usually would. Whether or not to check the box which forbids search engines to index your local site is up to you. Since not even Google can access it on your hard drive, it doesn’t really matter.

Just make sure to disable the check box once you decide to move your site to the live server. Otherwise you might be disappointed by your search results and traffic.

Pick Install WordPress and you are done. Well done, you have officially installed WordPress in a local environment!

Wrapping Up

Learning how to install WordPress offline is an almost mandatory skill for anyone working with the platform professionally.

Being able to set up your website in a local environment allows you to test themes, plugins and website changes without the danger of compromising your live site.

It’s also a quick and free alternative to staging environments that allows you to work on your site independent of an Internet connection.

In addition to that, tools like XAMPP make installing WordPress offline no more complicated than setting it up on a normal server, in some ways even easier.

In this tutorial you have learned how to create you own local testing environment for WordPress websites. You are now free to do anything on your site you would usually do on your live install.

Install themes and plugins, modify the stylesheet, set up custom templates, work with functions.php and whatever your heart desires.

The only difference is that now if something breaks, nobody but you will be affected and you can always go back to a previous version without doing any damage.

Once you are satisfied, you can then move your changes to the live environment. I promise, this one change will revolutionize the way you work with WordPress.

Using WordPress child theme to customize your WordPress theme is the safest route possible. Because your customization will be saved in a different folder and it won’t get lost when you update the parent theme.

What is Child Theme?

Child theme is the mirror reflection of a theme. Whatever changes you make to the reflection will not affect the original or parent theme. But if the parent theme makes any changes it will be visible in your child theme.

Why You Should Be Using Child Themes

Using WordPress child themes to modify the theme is one of the safest and recommended way. Your changes will not be deleted if your parent theme gets updated. Another benefit of using child theme is if your child theme modification creates issue you can always deactivate the child and revert back to parent theme.

How To set Up a WordPress Child Theme

  1. Creating a Child Theme Manually
  2. Creating a Child Theme Using Plugin

Requirements:

Make sure your parent theme is present in the Appearance -> Themes page, otherwise it will not work.

Editing Other Template Files

If you want to add any custom functions to your WordPress child theme, you have to write them in your child themes functions.php. You can even make any structural or layout changes of your parent theme using child theme.
Lets go through this step by step

For instance, you have created a child theme of Twenty Sixteen Theme. Now you want to change how single page are display in twenty Sixteen. The single page is located at twentysixteen/template-parts/content-single.php
Step 1 : Create a content-single.php in your child theme folder. But ensure it will overwrite the parent theme we have to follow the exact file name & structure.

Step 2: Create a folder and place the file inside that folder. Make sure the path looks exactly like the parent theme.
Parent Theme : twentysixteen/template-parts/content-single.php
Child Theme : twentysixteen-child/template-parts/content-single.php

Step 3: Now you can write your own code in the content-single.php and it will overwrite parent file

Using this method you can edit and overwrite any template of parent theme. You just have to make sure file name and folder path are identical.
