Go Red for Women is a worldwide initiative of the American Heart Association to increase women’s heart health awareness and to serve as a catalyst for change to improve women’s lives locally, nationally, and globally.

Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States, claiming more lives each year than all forms of cancer combined. Cardiovascular disease continues to be a woman’s greatest health threat, taking the life of one in every three women.

“I have worked in healthcare as a nurse for 30+ years, and I have a deep commitment to addressing our community's health and wellness needs,” said Tilley. “Additionally, cardiovascular disease has affected both sides of my family - my mother, father, father-in-law, and husband. Without the work of the Go Red for Women movement and the American Heart Association, I may not have these people in my life today. This initiative is important to me because it educates women about their risks and empowers them to take proactive steps toward heart health through advocacy, support, and community engagement that actively make a difference across Baton Rouge.”

“We are thrilled to have Lesley’s experience, conviction and passion help drive Go Red in Greater Baton Rouge. Together, we know that we will have a positive impact on the lives of women in our community and the families that depend on them,” said Kerin Spears, executive director, American Heart Association, Greater Louisiana.

This year’s Go Red for Women movement and its local achievements will be celebrated on Friday, February 7 at the 2025 Capital Area Go Red for Women Luncheon. The event is sponsored by: Cardio Health Solutions (Live Fierce Capital Area sponsor), Our Lady of the Lake Heart and Vascular Institute (Live Fierce Take Action sponsor), RJ Daigle and Sons Contractors Inc., Coleman Consulting Group LLC, Woman’s Hospital, Cardiovascular Institute of the South, Celtic Group, Gerry Lane Enterprises, Hancock Whitney, Ochsner Health, Parish Construction & Roofing, Velocity Clinical Research, and WellCare.
About Go Red for Women®

The American Heart Association’s signature initiative, Go Red for Women®, is a comprehensive platform designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally. While the majority of cardiac events can be prevented, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, claiming the lives of 1 in 3 women. For 19 years, Go Red for Women has encouraged awareness. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power of women to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. It challenges them to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. It also gives them tools they need to lead a heart healthy life. The Go Red for Women movement is nationally sponsored by CVS Health, with additional support from national cause supporters.
During the 2023 North Dakota legislative session, the association was able to successfully advance legislation to ensure longer, healthier lives for all through the work in key policy areas, including extending and funding Medicaid maternal health coverage for new moms, increasing access to quality childcare programming and maintaining the stroke & cardiac registry program funding. The Association also celebrated successful implementation of Self-Measured Blood Pressure equipment and coverage for North Dakotans on Medicaid and celebrated the expansion of the Cardiac Ready Communities program with the ND State Capitol Complex being named as one of the state’s first Cardiac Ready Campuses.

Looking ahead to the 2025 North Dakota Legislative Session, the Association intends to continue to focus on four key initiatives that aim to prepare North Dakota schools and athletic facilities to respond to cardiac emergencies, reduce access to harmful commercial tobacco products to youth and ensure all North Dakota children have access to healthy school meals. The Association will advocate for the following policies:

Join the Nation of Lifesavers by encouraging adoption of Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERPS) in all schools & athletic facilities to strengthen protections for our children in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest.

Support the increase of commercial tobacco tax, including parity on other commercial tobacco & nicotine products.

Advocate for healthy school meals for all.

Strengthen Stroke and Cardiac Systems of Care designations & confirm funding as well as increasing the opportunity for Cardiac Ready Communities and Campuses.

The American Heart Association urges North Dakota lawmakers to prioritize these essential policies to improve the health of all North Dakotans. Together, we can work to reduce the number of deaths caused by heart disease, expand access to life-saving healthcare, and promote healthier communities across the state. In addition, Association advocates will be at the State Capitol on January 31 to visit with Legislators about these key issues.

To support the Association’s work in North Dakota, join the American Heart Association’s You’re the Cure network by texting ND to 46839. Members will receive regular updates about these bills and opportunities to engage with elected officials in support of these initiatives.

This agenda focuses on key initiatives essential to improving the health and well-being of all Kentuckians.

During the 2024 legislative session, the Association was able to successfully advance legislation to ensure longer, healthier lives for all through the work in key policy areas. One such success was legislation requiring Cardiac Emergency Response Plans/AEDs in all Kentucky public schools, accompanied by a $2.5M appropriation to support this requirement. While not all priorities were passed, the Association made great forward movement in advancing key policy items during the 2024 Kentucky Legislative Session and intends to keep the same momentum as the 2025 session begins.

During the 2025 Kentucky Legislative Session, the Association aims to continue to focus on several key initiatives that aim to increase healthcare access and improve the heart/brain health of Kentuckians.

Secure funding to support heart/brain health in Kentucky. This appropriation will support the Kentucky Heart Disease and Stroke Program, the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival and the mandate for CPR training for students prior to graduation from high school.

To prevent youth access/initiation, require nicotine/tobacco retailers to maintain a state license. This will allow annual compliance checks and escalating penalties for retailers who break the law and sell to anyone under 21 years of age.

Defend against expected threats to SNAP (food stamps) and Medicaid. Access to food and healthcare is vital to improving the health of Kentuckians.

The American Heart Association urges Kentucky lawmakers to prioritize these essential policies to improve the health of all Kentuckians. Together, we can work to reduce the number of deaths caused by heart disease, expand access to life-saving healthcare, and promote healthier communities across the state.

In addition, Association advocates will be at the State Capitol on February 6 to visit with Legislators about these key issues. Association advocates will also be at the State Capitol on the following day, February 7, to commemorate Heart Month/Wear Red Day and bring awareness to hands-only CPR.

To support the Association’s work in Kentucky, join the American Heart Association’s You’re the Cure network by texting KY to 46839. Members will receive regular updates about these bills and opportunities to engage with elected officials in support of these initiatives.

While being aware of the signs of a heart attack and taking steps to reduce your risk are important all year long, the American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health for all, says that’s especially critical during the next few weeks.

A number of scientific studies confirm this deadly phenomenon. A study published in Circulation, the flagship journal of the American Heart Association, reported that more cardiac deaths occur in the U.S. on December 25 than on any other day of the year, followed by December 26 and January 1.

Holiday heart attack survivor shares her story
A local survivor, Christine Betz, faced this head on after she suffered a heart attack during the holiday season. Betz began experiencing chest pains while walking her dog on Dec. 26, 2020, but initially dismissed the symptoms as aftereffects of enjoying rich holiday food with family. Days later, after her symptoms continued and a COVID-19 test came back negative, Betz sought medical care, which showed that her blood pressure was elevated. After more tests, Betz went to a hospital in Barrington (Ill.), the closest hospital to her town of Cary, where an EKG indicated that she had suffered a heart attack the previous day. During surgery, doctors found a 99% “widow maker” blockage, and Betz had a stent implanted in her heart.

After her surgery, Betz was instructed to rest for two weeks. She now adheres to a Mediterranean diet, consisting mainly of lean meats, vegetables and whole foods. Betz sees a cardiologist annually in addition to her general physicals and hopes to never have to be placed on medication. Betz, who enjoys skiing, tennis and golf, says her active lifestyle wasn’t impacted by her cardiac event, but the heart attack did open the door to her learning more about her family health history. Betz’s father survived a heart attack in his 50s years before Betz’s, and her mother also passed away because of a possible heart event.

“She went to sleep and didn’t wake up,” Betz said.

Betz encouraged her siblings to get tested for possible heart disease and now says others should know their family heart health history at all times of year.

“People should do heart checks. It can happen to anybody … I’m living proof,” Betz said.

Betz is grateful for her survival story and for the ability to learn more about healthy living, which allows her to continue enjoying holidays with her loved ones.

“Life is too short. … Whether you like to travel or you like to see friends or do things, do it because you never know when it could happen to you that you can pass away,” she said.

Saving a life during a cardiac event
Giving the gift of life may also come into play if you see someone experiencing heart attack or stroke symptoms. You could be out shopping at the mall, enjoying the sights and sounds of the holiday season or spending time at a family gathering and witness someone having a heart attack and going into cardiac arrest. Starting CPR immediately and calling 911 could be the difference in life or death in those situations.

The American Heart Association has a short instructional video at http://www.heart.org/handsonlyCPR. Watching the video and learning Hands-Only CPR could be a lifesaving and life-changing activity for the family to do together as you’re gathered for the holidays. Family gatherings are also a good time to talk about family health history.

Heart health tips
The following are several heart-healthy tips for the upcoming holidays:

Know symptoms and take action: Heart attack signs and stroke symptoms vary in men and women and it’s important to recognize them early and call 9-1-1 for help. The sooner medical treatment begins, the better the chances of survival and preventing heart damage.

Celebrate in moderation Eating healthfully during the holidays doesn’t have to mean depriving yourself, there are still ways to eat smart. Look for small, healthy changes and swaps you can make so you continue to feel your best while eating and drinking in moderation, and don’t forget to watch your salt intake.

Plan for peace on earth and goodwill toward yourself: Make time to take care of yourself during the busy holiday. Reduce stress from family interactions, strained finances, hectic schedules and other stressors prevalent this time of year, including traveling.

Keep moving: The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week and this number usually drops during the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Get creative with ways to stay active, even if it’s going for a family walk or another fun activity you can do with your loved ones.

Stick to your meds: Busy holidays can cause you to skip medications, forgetting them when away from home or not getting refills in a timely manner. The American Heart Association has a medication chart to help stay on top of it and be sure to keep tabs on your blood pressure numbers.

The American Heart Association has more on ways to live heart-healthy during the holidays and all year long at heart.org.

Of particular note, heart attacks increased 37% on Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve), peaking at 10 p.m. and more often in people over 75 and those with diabetes or previous cardiovascular disease.

A study presented at the British Cardiovascular Society meeting in June supported previous research finding more serious heart attacks occur on Mondays than any other day of the week. This initiative reflects the AHA’s commitment to addressing health disparities by placing blood pressure kiosks in underserved areas to empower residents with accessible tools for managing their heart health.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate this exciting initiative will take place on Wednesday, December 18, at 1 PM at the Auburn Gresham Healthy Lifestyle Hub, located at 839 W. 79th Street, Chicago, IL 60620. This event is open to the community, providing an opportunity for residents, community leaders, and health advocates to witness this milestone in promoting heart health and wellness. Representatives from both the Greater Auburn-Gresham Development Corporation (GAGDC) and UI Health – Mile Square will be present to highlight the importance of this partnership and its impact on the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

The new blood pressure kiosk is housed within the Healthy Lifestyle Hub, a transformative redevelopment project led by GAGDC. This catalytic initiative has revitalized a long-vacant office building in the heart of the Auburn Gresham community, breathing new life into the 79th & Halsted commercial corridor. After standing vacant for over 20 years, this prominent structure now serves as a beacon of hope and a center for community health and development.

"We are thrilled to bring this resource to the Auburn Gresham community," said Brittany Walsh, Executive Director, American Heart Association. "High blood pressure is a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke, and providing accessible tools like this kiosk is a critical step in empowering individuals to monitor and manage their heart health."

The kiosk provides free, easy-to-use blood pressure monitoring, along with educational materials to help users better understand their readings and access referrals to further medical care. This initiative aligns with the AHA’s mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives.

“Greater Auburn Gresham Development is proud to partner with the American Heart Association, Healthy Chicago Equity Zone, UI Health, and other collaborators for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Higi Station. Access fosters awareness, which opens the door to action,” said Kathy Welch, Executive Administrator, GAGDC. “This Higi Station stands as a symbol of self-care and advocacy for improving quality of life. We extend our gratitude to the American Heart Association for their partnership and their ongoing efforts to combat heart disease – the leading cause of death in many of our communities.”

Community members are encouraged to join the ribbon-cutting ceremony and explore the Healthy Lifestyle Hub’s offerings. Together, the American Heart Association, GAGDC, and UI Health – Mile Square are committed to advancing health equity and fostering a healthier future for all.

In Kansas City, life expectancy varies by up to 12 years depending on neighborhood, a disparity often driven by social determinants of health and inequities in healthcare access. These structural barriers underscore the urgent need for community leaders like Karst and Gaumer to champion change.

“Kathy Karst, Dr. Kathy Gaumer, and all of our nominees' steadfast efforts are helping to ensure everyone across the Kansas City area has equitable opportunities for a longer, healthier life,” said Laura Lopez, Executive Director of the American Heart Association. “By ensuring access to quality healthcare and addressing health disparities, we are strengthening our collective future, creating a healthier, more vibrant community for generations to come.”

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S., and projections show its economic toll will nearly triple by 2050. However, Leaders of Impact nominees like Karst and Gaumer are advancing awareness and action to fight these trends.

Over seven weeks, Karst and Gaumer competed in a fundraising campaign alongside 7 other Kansas City professionals. “Team Kathy” was named the 2024 Leaders of Impact winners after raising significant funds and engaging their networks to amplify the mission of the American Heart Association.

“Taking part in Leaders of Impact was personal for me because heart disease has deeply impacted my family,” said Karst. “From my maternal grandmother’s pioneering heart valve replacement to my in-laws’ battles with stroke and open-heart surgery, I’ve seen firsthand the difference that hope, determination, and support can make. This experience touched my heart and reaffirmed my faith in the power of kindness and community.”

Dr. Gaumer’s commitment also stems from her professional and personal experiences. “As an OB/GYN for over 35 years, I’ve witnessed how heart disease can affect not only women but their entire families,” she said. “Mothers often hold their families together, and their health impacts everyone around them. Participating in this campaign has been an honor and a privilege, and having a close friend as a partner made it even more meaningful.”

For more than 100 years, the American Heart Association has driven change by removing barriers to health, investing in groundbreaking research, educating healthcare professionals and patients, and advocating for healthy policies. In Kansas City, the Association is focused on reducing health disparities and increasing awareness of heart health across all communities.

Leaders of Impact launched on Oct. 17 in cities across the nation and culminated on Dec. 4. Each nominee’s participation is focused on opportunities to be a changemaker with a shared purpose to raise critical awareness and fund the mission of the American Heart Association.

Other local nominees included:

Lindsey Thompson, Chief of Staff, Lockton

Jack Jewsbury, Client Advocate, Lockton

Jimmy Bolanos, COO, Advent Health

Natasha Smith, CEO, True Peace Financial Solutions

Mary Grace Copeland-Salinas, Clinical Liaison, Johnson County Rehabilitation Hospital

Chris Perrin, Senior Director of Product Development, PSI

The 2025 ambassadors are: stroke survivor Cynthia Granada; cardiologist Ruchi Kapoor, M.D., Ph.D.; cardiac arrest survivor Carla McCubbin; mom of a child with a heart defect Lee McGrath; and heart transplant recipient Macey Wright.

The women will serve as the face of Go Red for Women in Washington and share their personal stories and insights to elevate awareness and understanding about cardiovascular disease, the leading killer of women in the United States.

“Since it launched in 2004, Go Red for Women has greatly elevated women’s awareness about the threat of heart disease and stroke,” said Dr. Ruchi Kapoor, a cardiologist with UW Medicine and board member for the American Heart Association, Puget Sound. “We also want women to realize that most forms of heart disease and stroke are preventable. We hope to inspire women to understand their risks, take action to reduce risk and be aware of the warning signs.”

Each Go Red for Women ambassador brings a personal connection to cardiovascular disease and is volunteering her time to foster connections with other women.

Cynthia Granada, stroke at age 44. Granada was working from home in 2022 and was attending an online training when her left arm went numb and weak. Thinking she was having a heart attack, Granada called her husband and told him they needed to go to the emergency room. The hospital team performed a bunch of tests and as the minutes ticked by, the numbness in Granada’s arm progressed to her leg and eventually her face. In time, she was told she was having a stroke and the medical team asked Granada if she wanted to receive a clot-busting medication. Despite the risks, she quickly said yes and the drug was able to reverse the effects of the stroke. From this experience, Granada encourages women to seek medical attention immediately if they feel like something is wrong.

Ruchi Kapoor, M.D., Ph.D., heart health expert. Dr. Kapoor is a cardiologist and volunteer for the American Heart Association Puget Sound, lending her expertise as a local board member, advocate, volunteer expert and speaker. As a cardiologist, her interests are heart disease prevention, women’s heart health and cardio-oncology. In her clinical practice and as an advocate for women’s health, Dr. Kapoor emphasizes the need to improve awareness among women about heart disease warning signs as well as improving knowledge about heart disease in women with medical providers.

Carla McCubbin, cardiac arrest survivor. McCubbin was enjoying a stay with family members on Hat Island near Everett in 2020 when her heart stopped and she collapsed. Her mother-in-law quickly went into action and provided CPR. Being in a remote location, it took 20 minutes for volunteer paramedics to arrive with a defibrillator. McCubbin’s husband, a former EMT, used the defibrillator to restart her heart. The 49-year-old mom, wife and middle school teacher says it was a miracle she survived the ordeal. She was airlifted to a hospital and received an internal pacemaker/defibrillator to keep her heart beating normally. In 2022, McCubbin was back on Hat Island when it happened again, but this time the internal defibrillator did its job and shocked her heart back into rhythm. McCubbin shares her journey to illustrate the need for everyone to learn lifesaving CPR because you never know when you may need to act in an emergency.

Lee McGrath, heart mom and chairperson, Go Red for Women. As chairperson for the 2025 Go Red for Women movement in the Puget Sound, Lee McGrath hopes to build on the sisterhood of Go Red and help women feel supported in their pursuit of better cardiovascular health. This executive vice president of health care services at Premera Blue Cross is also motivated by personal experience. When her son was five years old, he was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. “Learning this was devastating and as a parent you feel so alone,” said McGrath. “I don’t want any family, any mother, to feel this way.” Connection is at the heart of her leadership role for Go Red. McGrath’s vision is to build communities that foster better health and wellbeing for all, including underserved communities, and to drive change and improve health through our workplaces and personal connections.

Macey Wright, congenital heart defect and heart transplant. Wright was born with both aortic and mitral valve stenosis, but heart valves that didn’t work properly did not stop her from excelling at gymnastics. At age 14, however, her heart was beyond repair and she had to give up the sport she loved. It was determined that Wright needed a heart transplant and in 2016 she received her new heart. Since then, she has been a strong advocate and volunteer for the American Heart Association. Wright’s health experience showed her firsthand the importance of scientific advances and it prompted her to pursue a degree in biology from the University of Puget Sound, where she graduated last year. For Wright, reaching big milestones like graduation and starting her first career are especially meaningful and indicative of her journey. It’s important to Wright that women know that heart disease is their largest health threat and it can impact anyone, even young women.

The 2025 Go Red for Women ambassadors invite women in the community to join them in wearing red to raise awareness on National Wear Red Day, Friday, February 7, 2025. On Wear Red Day, everyone is asked to put on a splash of red to remind women that heart disease is preventable and beatable. The American Heart Association urges women to understand their family health history, know their health numbers and make healthy behavior changes.
For more than two decades, Go Red for Women has encouraged awareness.

Blood pressure machines were installed Wednesday, Dec. 18 at the Youngstown Metro Housing Authority’s (YMHA) Amedia Plaza and Gutknecht Towers locations, followed by an installation at the Central YMCA on Thursday, Dec. 19, adding to the list of places where people in Youngstown can access one of these potentially life-saving hubs.

“We are working to make sure everyone, everywhere knows their blood pressure numbers so that they can live a longer, healthier life,” said Gabbi Roszman, Community Impact Director for the American Heart Association in Northeast Ohio. “This is one of many ways that we are removing barriers to health equity right here in our community.”

With these hubs, people now have access to a blood pressure (BP) monitor, American Heart Association guided materials on how to properly measure BP, an explanation of what their numbers mean and a contact list of medical providers for anyone who needs follow-up.

Known as the “silent killer,” high blood pressure is one of the most common risk factors for stroke. According to the American Heart Association, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the U.S.

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure, which can lead to stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, vision loss and more. These poor health outcomes can potentially be avoided if hypertension is managed. Unfortunately, many people don’t know they have high blood pressure, and the use of a blood pressure monitor might be difficult because of cost or lack of access.

“The YMCA is all about improving our community’s health, and these hubs will only help that mission,” said D’Aundray Brown, Executive Director of the Central YMCA.

“Getting a blood pressure hub at the YMHA will meet people where they are to help save lives,” added Stephan Hawkins, Director of Resident Initiatives. “We’re so glad to be a part of such an important mission.”

In addition to the Central YMCA and the YMHA, the American Heart Association also has blood pressure hubs at all 14 locations of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

Blood pressure hubs will also be launching soon with the YWCA Mahoning Valley.

Blood pressure numbers of less than 120/80 mm Hg are considered within the normal range. If your results fall into this category, stick with heart-healthy habits like following a balanced diet and getting regular exercise. People with elevated blood pressure are likely to develop high blood pressure unless steps are taken to control the condition.

The American Heart Association, a global force for healthier lives for all, recognized Lewis for the impact she is making in driving equitable cardiovascular health in the community.

In the CSRA, life expectancy varies by 12 years which can often be caused by social drivers of health, deeply rooted inequities related to public policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms that reinforce inequities in health.

“Shauntia has been an incredible advocate and educator through the Leaders of Impact campaign, bringing awareness to cardiovascular disease and helping to ensure everyone across the CSRA has equitable opportunities for a longer, healthier life,” said Ansley Howze, American Heart Association executive director. “Together, we are strengthening our collective future, creating a healthier, more vibrant community for generations to come.”

Over seven weeks, Lewis raised the most funds out of 15 Leaders of Impact nominees in Georgia and South Carolina. She was inspired to take action by her grandmother, Coretha Miles, an influential role model who Lewis witnessed experience a stroke when she was a child.

“Taking part in Leaders of Impact was personal for me because I’ve seen first-hand how heart disease can affect the families and loved ones of those who experience it,” said Lewis. “It has been an honor to use my platform and story to celebrate my grandmother’s legacy and raise awareness of cardiovascular health.”

Lewis is deputy director for housing and community development with the City of Augusta. She also serves on the American Heart Association CSRA Board of Directors.

Leaders of Impact launched nationally on Oct. 17, 2024, in hundreds of communities and culminated on Dec. 4.
The award honors those who, like Dr. Khan, help their communities live longer and healthier lives. Dr. Khan’s collaboration with the American Heart Association has been instrumental in raising awareness about hypertension in Greater Boston and providing residents with essential tools and resources for prevention and management.

“Dr. Khan has empowered countless individuals in Boston’s under-resourced neighborhoods to take charge of their health,” said Adriene Worthington, vice president of community impact at the American Heart Association. “Her work has not only improved health outcomes but has also cultivated a sense of empowerment and resilience in the community.”

Under Dr. Khan’s leadership, Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center has worked with American Heart Association Community Impact Director Stephanie Voltaire to achieve several key milestones, including distributing blood pressure monitors to patients for at-home tracking. The clinic has also enhanced its food pantry with freezers, refrigeration, and shelving, enabling better access to fresh produce and other healthy foods.

The award ceremony drew representatives from the American Heart Association, Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center, and Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospitals, the sponsor of the Live Fierce Award.

“Dr. Khan is one of those really smart people who work hard every day and never really expect much in return,” said Charles Murphy, president and CEO of Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center. “I was thrilled when I learned that the American Heart Association had selected Tanveer for this honor. She does so much for our community, and she is so deserving of this honor.”

In addition to Worthington and Murphy, speakers included David Coggins, CEO of Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospitals; Teresa Hayes, senior director of business development at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Braintree; and Rachel Adjemian, associate vice president of development at the American Heart Association.

After the ceremony, Dr. Khan reflected on her work and the partnership between the two organizations.

“Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center and the American Heart Association are two sides of the same coin,” she said. “Both organizations are dedicated to helping underserved communities—those who lack representation and struggle to navigate the healthcare system. We are united in our aim to support and uplift these individuals.”

The Live Fierce Award underscores Dr. Khan’s dedication to fostering health equity and creating a healthier, more resilient Boston.

It is often fatal. According to American Heart Association data, 9 out of every 10 people who experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital die. Unfortunately, only about 40% of people who experience a cardiac arrest outside a hospital get the immediate help they need before emergency responders arrive.

What happens

Cardiac arrest is triggered by an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). With its pumping action disrupted, the heart cannot pump blood to the brain, lungs, and other organs. Seconds later, a person becomes unresponsive, is not breathing or is only gasping. Death occurs quickly if the person does not receive immediate CPR.

Early recognition of cardiac arrest and quick action improves the person’s chance of survival. CPR and the appropriate use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED) to restart the heart are key to survival.

CPR can help keep the heart pumping and blood flowing to vital organs until an electrical shock from a defibrillator is available to restore the heart to a normal heart rhythm. Then the patient can be safely moved for further medical treatment, supportive care, testing to determine what the cause of the arrest may have been and recovery, including both physical and mental health resources for the person and their family.

Difference between cardiac arrest and heart attack

Cardiac arrest is an “electrical” problem in the heart. A heart attack is a circulation issue. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked. If not reopened quickly, the part of the heart normally nourished by the blocked artery begins to die. People often confuse cardiac arrest with a heart attack or use these terms interchangeably, but they are not the same. Heart attacks can often lead to cardiac arrest but not vice versa.

Cardiac arrest causes

Cardiac arrest can have several causes. Heart attack is a common cause. Other conditions may also disrupt the heart’s rhythm and lead to cardiac arrest.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) or a thickened heart muscle – is a common cause of sudden cardiac death in young people and athletes specifically. The thickened heart can be due to a genetic condition or can be caused by athletic conditioning that thickens the muscles of the heart and can make it more susceptible to an irregular heart rhythm like ventricular fibrillation/tachycardia[1].

Commotio cordis, a rare phenomenon from a blunt impact to the chest, can cause sudden death in the absence of apparent cardiac damage.[2] The blow to the chest at precisely the wrong time in the cardiac cycle causes an electrical abnormality in the heart resulting in an irregular heart rhythm that cannot pump blood to the body.

Regardless of the cause, immediate CPR is needed and a shock to reset the rhythm can help the heartbeat return to normal function.

Resources for learning CPR

Each year in the United States, an estimated 350,000 people experience sudden cardiac arrest in the community[3]. Anyone who witnesses a cardiac arrest in the community (i.e., not in a hospital) can perform CPR. Roughly 70% of cardiac arrests that do not happen in the hospital occur in homes and private residences, therefore, a friend or family member is mostly likely to be the person who needs to take action. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.

For adults and adolescent children, compression-only CPR, known as Hands-Only CPR can be equally effective as traditional CPR in the first few minutes of emergency response and is a skill everyone can learn. It is as simple as calling 911 if you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse and then push hard and fast in the center of the chest at a rate of 100-120 beats per minute. Hands-Only CPR participants learn the correct rate and depth of compressions and how to use an AED.

Traumatic stress for responders, observers

The skill to perform CPR and use a defibrillator are the foundational components of preparing bystanders to respond to cardiac arrest. People also need to feel emotionally prepared to respond and be able to cope with the aftermath of actually performing CPR[4].

Witnessing and responding to a cardiac arrest can be a very traumatic event and may cause lingering psychological impact regardless of the outcome. Bystanders and witnesses may need support and resources to help process their experience.

Responders have cited exhaustion, guilt, flashbacks, sleep disturbances, self-doubt, anger, sadness and fear. A positive outcome to performing CPR can mitigate some of the emotional responses; however, psychological responses are wide-ranging and individualized. In situations with a failed resuscitation attempt, PTSD symptom scores were twice as high for responders as those for non-witnesses.

Advocacy and action

Last week President Biden signed the bipartisan Cardiomyopathy Health Education, Awareness, Research and Training in Schools (HEARTS) Act into law. The new law will help ensure students and staff in schools nationwide are prepared to respond to a cardiac emergency with cardiac emergency response plans, CPR training and AEDs, and other critical resources.

With over 100 years of lifesaving service, the American Heart Association is building momentum across the country to turn bystanders into lifesavers, with more people than ever saying they are willing to perform CPR in the event of an emergency. Learning CPR is the skill needed to join the Association’s Nation of Lifesavers™ movement, led by National Ambassador Damar Hamlin, cardiac arrest survivor and professional football player for the Buffalo Bills. The Association is the worldwide leader in resuscitation science, education and training, and publishes the official scientific guidelines for CPR. The organization intends to double survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest by 2030.

The bipartisan legislation unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives in September and the U.S. Senate earlier this month.

The American Heart Association, which is celebrating 100 years of lifesaving service as the world’s leading voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health, strongly supports this legislation as part of its goal to double the survival rates from cardiac arrest nationwide by 2030 through its Nation of Lifesavers movement.

“The bipartisan HEARTS Act is a monumental step forward in saving lives from cardiac arrest on school grounds and athletic facilities across the country,” said Nancy Brown, chief executive officer of the American Heart Association. “By ensuring schools nationwide are equipped with cardiac emergency response plans, CPR training and AEDs, critical resources will be available to students, staff and visitors that can mean the difference between life and death during a cardiac emergency.”

“In January of 2023, I experienced cardiac arrest and was blessed to be surrounded by a team of medical professionals that saved my life,” said Damar Hamlin, Buffalo Bills safety, member of the National Football League’s Smart Heart Sports Coalition and National Ambassador for the American Heart Association’s Nation of Lifesavers movement. “Every year, as many as 23,000 kids experience cardiac arrest in our country, and I believe that every one of them deserves the same access to lifesaving care that I had. From schools to ball fields, this bill will help to protect kids, and I’m grateful to the lawmakers and partners who have made it a priority.”

The HEARTS Act includes key provisions of the Access to AEDs Act, which was introduced in March 2023 with the support of the American Heart Association, Hamlin, the National Football League and others.

Only 40% of people who experience a cardiac arrest get the immediate help they need before emergency responders arrive. But there is growing momentum across the country to turn bystanders into lifesavers, with more people than ever saying they are willing to perform CPR in the event of an emergency. As a result of efforts by the NFL’s Smart Heart Sports Coalition, of which the Association is a founding member, state legislatures across the country have passed policies to ensure schools are prepared to respond to cardiac emergencies.

The HEARTS Act will bolster these state efforts by creating a new grant program to provide schools with additional resources for CPR and AED training, the purchase of AEDs and related equipment and the development of cardiac emergency response plans. These plans can more than double survival rates from cardiac arrest by empowering people nearby to take action and call 911, start CPR and use an AED. In schools with AEDs, children who experience cardiac arrest are seven times as likely to survive as children in schools without AEDs.

“Every second counts when someone experiences a cardiac arrest, and now schools will have the resources they need to save lives,” Brown said. “We are so appreciative of the bill’s many champions in Congress, including Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Sens. Cory Booker and Susan Collins and Reps. Frank Pallone, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick and Bill Posey, for their persistence and commitment over the past two years to make schools safer nationwide.”

The national campaign in support of the HEARTS Act has featured grassroots advocates from across the country sharing their heart-wrenching personal experiences with cardiac arrest and heart disease with lawmakers. The campaign also has featured print, digital and social media advertising in Washington, D.C. and across the country to elevate the voices of cardiac arrest survivors and families who have lost a loved one to cardiac arrest.

“We look forward to working with the new Congress and administration to ensure the HEARTS Act is fully funded and the law is successfully implemented,” Brown said. “Our efforts continue to pass policies at the state level to require schools to develop cardiac emergency response plans and ensure they have the resources to do so. Securing funding for these policies will protect more lives and create safer environments for students, staff and school visitors across the country.”

In Milwaukee County, life expectancy varies by 13 years,[1] which can often be caused by social drivers of health, deeply rooted inequities related to public policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms which often reinforce inequities in health.

Landmark legislation will protect youth, increase cessation and advance health equity

DENVER, Dec. 20, 2024 — The American Heart Association, celebrating 100 years of lifesaving service as the world’s leading voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health, issued the following statement in response to this week's announcement that Denver Mayor Mike Johnston signed into law a measure that will eliminate the sale of flavored tobacco products within the city.

The Denver City Council and Mayor Mike Johnston have demonstrated true leadership by prioritizing the health and well-being of our community. This measure will protect our kids from addiction, help those experiencing nicotine addiction take that first step toward quitting, and reduce the health disparities caused by Big Tobacco’s deliberate targeting of Black and Brown communities.

“Flavored tobacco products, including menthol, are designed to hook young people by masking the harshness of tobacco, making it easier to start and harder to quit. These products have been a gateway to lifelong addiction, with 80% of youth who use tobacco starting with a flavored product. By removing these enticing flavors from store shelves, Denver takes a critical step to prevent youth from starting and supporting those who are already experiencing nicotine addiction quit.

Denver now joins seven other Colorado cities that have eliminated flavored tobacco and nicotine product sales, including Aspen, Boulder, Carbondale, Edgewater, Glenwood Springs, Golden and Snowmass. The American Heart Association stands alongside the coalition of healthcare leaders, educators, parents and community advocates who championed this measure and calls on cities across Colorado to follow the example of these eight great cities. Together, we can create healthier futures for our families and communities.”
